Learning to drive on FSD Beta takes training. You did a job as instructor. I hope your mom becomes a regular user. FSD will be a real boon to older citizens who value their mobility.

I think the first thing you should have showed her is how to take over with the steering wheel and the brakes and let her do it multiple times. Imagine what would have happened if you came in a dangerous situation without knowing her how to cope with it.

Really interesting video. I think she did really well and you threw her in the deep end with minimum time to adapt. Which of course would elicit a better reaction. I really hope the older generations can learn to trust and use FSD (when out of BETA) and help make the roads safe. Same goes for younger drivers who don’t have much driving experience.

Great idea to do this video. A couple of things come to mind watching this. 1) The fact that you would even consider having your mom try FSD beta shows how far FSD beta has come since it was first released. I doubt you or many people would have thought this was a good idea even 1 year ago. The progress is real. 2) I've also let people use FSD beta for the first time and they have similar reactions to your mom in that they are clearly nervous with hands a few inches away. They simply don't look comfortable. This is normal. It really does take time to get used to using FSD beta and understand how it works and where it is rock solid and where it may need some help. I'm convinced that most people new to FSD beta who try it for at least 2 months on a daily basis, everywhere they go, will not want to drive without it after that. Its hard to convince someone of this who only uses it one time on a 10 min drive or only uses it sporadically now and then but I'm convinced it is true. Just want to encourage anyone who has FSD beta or even thinking to purchase it to actually use it as much as possible for a couple of months to get past that "nervousness" that inevitably occurs initially. Once getting through this period, using FSD beta (responsibly) becomes both more relaxing than driving manually and more safe. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for this! I will be using FSD soon in our Model 3 and I am a very phobic driver. It's fascinating to see how a complete newby handles the experience. I think it would have helped your mom be more comfortable if she had already gotten a bit used to driving the car without FSD. Learning to drive our Model 3 took me awhile, as it's a different experience from other cars. But she did great! I do think this tech will provide the ability to allow many older/comprised drivers their mobility again.

Great job, mom for trying! You did great. It's a little scary or unsettling feeling at first to cede driving tasks fully to the car. You slowly have to realize you are actually relinquishing driving rather than control because you can take over at any moment you assert the desire to do so. Just like with cruise control. It does feel like u give up control until you become comfortable with taking control easily and with more time with it, as you said.

Very brave by the both of you, and her reaction was just as I would expect. Most people are uncomfortable with scenarios where they feel they surrender some degree of control to technology, atleast at first, before they build some faith in the technology through experience.
If she had been used to an automatic gearbox it could help make the car more familiar and less of a new thing if you had creep-mode activated.
Also, I suggest informing of both ways of disengaging FSD before taking off (forcing the steering wheel and using the brake pedal).
Personally I also would've asked her politely not to rest her foot on or near the accelerator pedal when adjusting the seat, as people who are not used to the instant torque tend to have accidents happen just that way.

  • @abblepc
    @abblepc Год назад +5

This is ok, but honestly you dealt more with logic than her feelings or fears of what could happen or wont happen, you could have explained better so that she felt more at ease. You on the other hand are used to it and your confidence helped her but again you didn’t address her fears, perhaps ask her questions as to what she doubts or has her own questions of what is possible instead of just describing what it was doing, which was obvious in driving itself. Editing to add that near the end her body language signaled that she couldn’t wait to make an exit from the car, yet somewhat enjoyed the experience or the technology but isn’t for her until she learns that its the norm and to be trusted.

I'm not exactly sure why you didn't just have her lightly hold the wheel like most people do, then if something went wrong she would have been ready. I rest my left arm on the door armrest and just lightly hang my arm on the lower left section of the wheel so it will feel the pressure.
I think it made it uncomfortable sitting there too not doing anything and not ready to take over. Especially someone who has never used it before.

i mean this is the same with everything new, its going to take a while before people just accept that it can work, now i myself don't currently own a tesla, but i will buy one in the future once they figure out everything with FSD and ill be more then happy to use it, but I'm 23 and I'm wired in, staying up to date with technology, my nan said she would let it drive her around, but saying and letting something happen is 2 different things, most of the people that i have spoken to who are, well, not keeping up to date with everything, say that they wouldn't trust it, even after FSD becomes more reliable then a human, getting most people to understand that it's literally more safe then driving yourself. well ehh that's going to be the hardest thing

I find there's a definite trend in these RUclips videos where wives and other women are trying out FSD -- They don't like the way it feels! It's like 90% of them at least! Women don't like the way it feels when FSD drives! Dr. Know It All's wife described FSD as "a toddler" driving. My wife agrees. Tesla needs to start addressing this! The way FSD driving feels right now would alienate about 40% of the population!

Your mum did great absolutely but if you ask anyone on FSD for the first time you won’t get a real appreciation because of the level of anxiety and uncertainty. Giving an 8 was her being polite imo 😂 let her practice the basics: engage, disengage methods, blue /gray wheel/lines, nags. At least in the video I didn’t see this. Once she get used to it ask her again she will probably love it 😊

All Tesla bulls are looking for a "wow" response, but most people look at FSD with some level of healthy suspicion. That distrust won't go away until human don't have to be behind the wheel.

Yeah that wasn't a good introduction. I think it's important to say something like "You are still in charge of the vehicle, if it does anything you don't want it to, just grab the wheel or tap the brake". She should know that *before* starting to use it.

FSD should be illegal, there is no legislation and no ethic control on the AI. If your car kills someone, you have to be responsible for it? It's not a stupid question, stupid is your way to think, and the day your (and other people) life gets ruined by a software or hardware issue, where you may have reacted promptly if you didn't trust it instead, then you will understand.
