It is worth investing in a set of nut files - cheapest about 5 to 10 quid on Amazon. And a graded set of emery papers (local hardware store) to file the underside of the saddle. Just take care to take off a small amount of material each time. Over the course of about a year I got every guitar I own set up exactly how I like it. Happy guitaring.
Thanks Robert for the first hand review of the Donner guitar. I’ve considered buying one myself but wanted to hear something from professional musician as your self. Thank you rob much appreciated.
Bought one super cheap off eBay a while back new but opened (assume means returned) but haven't used it yet, Thanks for the tip about lack of set up. Although I believe this is quite common with Chinese factory made guitars. Paid so little for mine might attempt to set it up myself as a learning project. Enjoy your videos Rob and appreciate your generosity in sharing.
Thanks for the review Rob. For travel I’ve looked at this Donner, your Vox Apache, and the Enya Sonic Go. The last two have a built in speaker. That’s kinda cool, but they are a bit larger to pack. I’ll debate on a purchase until one falls in my lap! Cheers.
I bought a new Squier 70s Jaguar on Monday, got it home with a new set of strings and spent about 3 hours setting the nut slot depth/width, neck relief, bridge height and saddles (intonation). The action at the 12th fret is 1.35mm (low E) & 0.96mm (high E) with zero fret buzz - happy days!
Going to make a visit to KGB. Got an old twelfth string needs a bit of TLC. I’m told it’s on Pacific road. That guitar you have,Rob. The sounds, are magnificent.
I do basic guitar tech work, what your luthier did was a proper guitar set up. Setting up the correct nut depth and neck relief will have the guitar ready for the bridge height to come down. All of this will slightly affect the scale length, so some intonation work may be required for the bridge. Nothing beats a proper set up.
I think that nowadays you have to factor in the price of a set up to any new guitar you buy. We are all different and have different styles and body and hand shapes so we are very individual. A lot like the custom fitting of Golf clubs for players nowadays too.
I recently got the Donner DST-152 Electric Guitar HSS Amp Kit for £110. Never having owned an electric guitar before (just a classical nylon string guitar), it's hard to judge it. But the action seems ok and it seems to play ok too and stay in tune. Maybe a better set of strings and a luthier would improve it!? Never understood why they don't set up the guitars properly in the factory.
I was looking at this guitar a few months ago and the reviews suggested that the action was very high. It's a shame this can't be sorted when it's manufactured. The neck looks quite wide, do you know what the nut width is Rob?
Try using an open tuning. D A D F# A D. This will enable you to use easier shapes whilst still getting a great sound. Joni Mitchell, Keith Richards and all top players use it (especially those whose fingers aren’t as agile as they once were). 👍🏻😎
Don't think I'll bother on principal to be honest, if a manufacturer is turning out a substandard product they don't deserve anyone's hard earned cash!
Thank god, I knew I was being gaslit. Every single review of this guitar only ever says good things about it. And they never mention anything about the things that matter: action and intonation.
The one I’ve got has no electrical issues but when I received the guitar it was crap. The action was ridiculously high rendering the instrument unplayable. I had to spend £50 to have it set up and now it plays perfectly. Had it not been a gift I would have returned it as you have done. 👍🏻
Just bought one of their “open box” specials for £160! Happy for KGB to sort it if needed, cheers Rob!
I got one last Black Friday. It is wonderful that your students admire you and send you gifts. I enjoy mine.

Beautiful playing. Show us Here comes the Sun. I am years off emulating your brilliance.
I did a tutorial for Here Comes The Sun. Free paperwork too. 👍🏻

The Donner has a headphone docket powered by a 9 volt battery so it’s great to practice with without upsetting the neighbours. 👍🏻🤪

Try the Snap Dragon travel guitars, they’re superb

Yep, you’re right. Setting up a guitar properly takes real knowledge and skill. 👍🏻

Donner August 2024 has a pre-school Sale if you want to buy one!!!
The one I had set up is now excellent. Without a set up though it’s a cricket bat. 👍🏻😎
Super high action is USUALLY to compensate for awful uneven frets.
I’ve always longed for a packable guitar
Hi Robert, are the frets on this Hush softer than on a traditional acoustic?

The neck is quite narrow actually, certainly not wide. Surprisingly good sound when amplified too. 👍🏻
Nut width is 43mm.

Yes, I agree. It wouldn’t take much to set them up properly before shipping them out to a customer. 👍🏻
if it's an acoustic, does it still need an amp?It looks like it does??
It has a headphone socket so it does not require an amp.

I saw a friend use one at an open mic in Formby, had a chat, she also had to have it sorted, but now it’s 100% and sounds amazing through a P.A.
No, it's a POS! Bought one, it sounded horrible like electronic interference! Tried to return it.

@@fennahrob6934 I do believe Yamaha guitars sells a style of guitars like the Donner.
