  • This is the third video in my Service Dog 101 series!! I hope you find it helpful for your prospects. Be aware though that sometimes dogs test really well but still have to be washed. This is not a guarantee. Hope you enjoyed. :)

    Love your videos! I am starting the process to getting myself a service dog
    and found your videos while doing research. I find them to be tremendously helpful as this is so overwhelming to me. Thank you for what you are doing Emily! Cannot begin to tell you how many questions you have already answered for me. I am 60 yrs old and have been contemplating this for several years for my ambulatory disability from a previous stroke as well as six toe amputations and neuropathy in my feet so I have issues with balance and walk with a cane and hope a service dog could give me back some added independence as I enjoy walking but am fearful of falling due to balance issues. I recently lost my sweet dog and feel now is the time in my life for a service dog so thanks again for all your helpful information not to mention your personality is a ray of sunshine and you articulate things so well!

    Here because my SDiT has been moved to In-Home only. He's a GREAT dog and I appreciate all that he's taught me, but yeah, it's heart breaking. The breeder was/is still pretty new to breeding, and while she was super nice, informative, and helpful....I just should have been way more prepared. I LOVE the dog I have and he is great In-Home, but yeah, I'm looking to getting things in order for my next prospect and trying to be a lot more thorough. While I love my dog, I'm the living embodiment of when you said waiting for another litter is easier than the heartbreak of a wash. He just turned two and we have been through four different trainers. He's just a bit too nervous in public.

    what I look for in a pup. 1) parents and grandparents - do they have appropriate drives and temperament, are they titled in IPO or other working sports if you dont know the dog personally. Lot of great dogs never get titled 2) pups - that is social and not shy, has eye contact , can chase a rag or ball (test both but if pup only chases one that is still very good), check for sound/environment sensitivity, has good food drive.

    Did you use a specific breeder to find Wes? Everywhere I look it’s just breeders expecting 300$ deposits and not really giving the choice of choosing a puppy out of the litter..... I feel that a doodle would suit me best but I just don’t want to go the wrong route and be given a dog that washes!

    • @imaniwilliams816

      I should warn you that doodles are not purebred dogs and as such they should not be charged as if they are AND they are not reliable in terms of temperament or physical characteristics because they are not purebred dogs. Anybody who is trying to sell you a doodle promising that they are a purebred AKC breed is LYING THROUGH THE SKIN OF THEIR TEETH. If you don't believe me you can check akc.org to see a list of all of the accepted breeds. The only "doodle" that is there is the poodle. If a breeder is not allowing you to choose your puppy that's actually a good thing! Here's why. The breeder has been with their litter since conception and because of this they are very familiar with the personality and energy level of every individual puppy in their litter if they are a responsible breeder. Due to this, they are much more likely to make a good match between a prospective puppy parent and a puppy than the puppy parent themselves. But the Volhard test! I'm getting there. Yes, the Volhard test can be reliable in determining the temperament of a puppy but you also have to take into account that the Volhard test only gives you a snapshot of that puppy's typical behavior and not the full spectrum. This is why it is more reliable for the breeder to pick the puppy for you, because they know the full spectrum, as opposed to you picking the puppy yourself. I hope this helps you. :)

    For the fetch does the puppy have to actually bring it back to you? At 49 days old they may not know how to lift and cary the object back. Also is there an alternative to the umbrella or can I do that outside (I don’t need any extra bad luck)

    My family sadly chose my prospect for me (a super hyper and fearful labradoodle puppy. Full grown at 30lbs). We never even met any of the puppies. I spent over 8 months of training and even got to the point of her being great with task training and everything. We were able to go to some smaller stores to train (permission given.) Sadly, I just had to wash her out due to her developing anxiety to my anxiety and then becoming reactive. I am unable to go anywhere but work (i have my own space for most of the time so its not as hard to work) and my house. My family refuses to let me find another prospect until I move out (I'm 17.) I have PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental disabilities. I have to be able to go out to get things I need but it's basically impossible without a SD. Do you have any suggestions about what I might be able to do/should do? Thanks ❤ love your channel and Wesley

    • @imaniwilliams816
      @imaniwilliams816 6 лет назад +4

      I'm not going to suggest exercise or eating well, although those are beneficial to the general population, to help you because I know the real struggle with having depression is finding the motivation to do even the most basic of things like eating or leaving your room. Initiating something like changing your diet and exercising is going to seem infinitely more difficult and frustrating to try to do because of the lack of motivation that comes with depression. So, I'm going to give you the advice that I was given. Going to counseling and therapy can help you. In addition to that, if you're not already medicated, medication can help you too. There are several studies that show doing both at the same time is most effective for being helpful. However, this is you. Find what works for you. You don't have to actively find it. You might notice that there are certain things that you just do without needing the motivation to do it. Ask yourself what makes you do those things and try to apply those motivations to the rest of your life. Those are just some general suggestions. Good luck! :)

      @@imaniwilliams816 that stuff doesnt work for my depression, anxiety, panic, and PTSD... I've had depression and anxiety for over 8 years now and been on all kinds of medications and try exercising all the time and do it consistently and it doesnt help with me so Monday I'm meeting with a new psychiatrist to see if a service dog will help and I'm just saying this because what you said doesnt help everyone

    • @imaniwilliams816
      @imaniwilliams816 4 года назад +1

      @@MattyzBeatz I agree that therapy + medication won't work for everybody, but it's still a solid option for some people. In my original comment, I said that only they could find what works for them as there's no universal solution for everybody. Will your current psychiatrist not approve you for a service dog?

    • @MattyzBeatz
      @MattyzBeatz 4 года назад +1

      @@imaniwilliams816 I moved states because my old psychiatrist would only see me with my guardians in the room and they were the ones who used to abuse me every day so I couldnt talk to the psychiatrist about what happened outside the house or in just what happens at school basically

      @imaniwilliams816 4 года назад +1

      @@MattyzBeatz That's horrible and that psychiatrist should have been fired! Patient confidentiality is a very serious thing and should be respected for all regardless of age. They had zero right to force you into such an uncomfortable situation and I'm flabbergasted why they thought that including your parents in your sessions would encourage honesty and openness.
      I hope that you find a new psychiatrist who does you justice and gives you all of the help that you need and deserve.

    Where do you get a *doodle that is service quality? Lots of people ask about *doodle breeders, and no breeders I have ever seen actually do anything to make sure their dogs are worth breeding. Would love to be able to stop having to go into conversations about poodles and such that most people won't understand.

    • @wesleytheservicedoodle1047
      @wesleytheservicedoodle1047  6 лет назад +3

      Honestly with all breeders, it's all about the research. You will find one that suits your needs!

    • @imaniwilliams816
      @imaniwilliams816 6 лет назад +1

      I would not recommend a doodle. Here's why. They are unreliable in temperament and physical characteristics. Contrary to popular belief, they are not a purebred dog. They are a mixed breed between whatever fashionable breed an unethical breeder comes up with and a poodle. Take the labradoodle for example. In a litter of five labradoodles you can find a puppy that looks like a Labrador, two puppies that look like poodles, one puppy that looks like a "typical" labradoodle, and a puppy that looks like none of these combinations. Let's say two of these puppies are actually hypoallergenic while the other three are allergenic and they have a startlingly vast range of temperament. Before I continue, I must clarify. TEMPERAMENT and PERSONALITY are not the same thing. TEMPERAMENT describes inherited behavioral characteristics and PERSONALITY describes individual behavioral characteristics. In addition to that, you will find that it is disturbingly common for people to breed two dogs that LOOK like a Labrador and poodle together that aren't actually purebred labradors or poodles which is why you have merle labradoodles. Ok, now I shall continue. Let's say these temperaments range from the typical lab temperament of love for everybody to the suspicious aloof temperament of a Rottweiler that got snuck into the bloodlines of the poodle way back into their heritage. An unassuming buyer is going to assume that all of these puppies are going to be the archetypal labradoodle. A "breed" that is going to be sweet, friendly, trainable, and hypoallergenic. However, we've already covered that some of these puppies are definitely not going to be naturally friendly and are going to need as much or more extensive socialization than a guard dog. We've also covered that out of all of the puppies in the litter only TWO of them are hypoallergenic. So the archetypal labradoodle is an illusion. It does not consistently exist. There are SOME labradoodles that fit the stereotype set out for them, but there are MANY MORE that do not and the general population is being mislead into thinking that labradoodles, or ANY doodle breed, are a designer gold mine breed when it is neither of those things. I hope that that is the answer you were looking for and that this helps you. :)

      Wesley the Service Doodle Yes, I think use of graphics or a real life example of you testing a dog so as to see an accurate representation would greatly help.I feel as though your delivery was somewhat flippant. It came off as unsure and as if you were reading off a screen. I think proper memorization of the material, citing them as the source, but stating the information, rather than “they say, or on their website” etc will help your video seem more professional. Lastly, annunciation and projection of your voice would help a lot too. I think you have great information and I’m sure you’re very knowledgeable. Just need to improve your delivery a bit.
