learning from other arts helps. wrestling for my school this year made my takedowns a lot better. when you grapple for a different objective it makes your grappling smarter
You also "shake the gi" in order to give you a bit more material to grab onto and a little bit more room for throwing. If the jacket's all tight it's a bit harder to throw. I've never heard that expression before though!
Really interesting. Makes sense. I don't do Judo (jiu-jitsu guy) but my guess coming in was it was like feinting in boxing and was meant to kind of mask your actual kazushi and throw attempts by creating a lot of white noise by yanking the gi around in non-committal ways.
But the Koreans used to also shake the lapel but for another reason. It was a good mind game in preparation for seoi nage. Look at the superstar judo footage
Was going to ask the same question. I’ve always been taught the “shake” is distraction but I really like Shintaro’s perspective on the arm movement to evade the grip and setup the next action. Would love to hear more on why he doesn’t like the distraction shake though
I started doing Judo about one-two months ago. I started shaking the gi. It’s mainly so that I can push and pull the person, so that I can hopefully get a reaction to set up a throw. Other times it’s so that I can break a grip, like what Shintaro says. Shaking the gi doesn’t help with a grip in most cases because there’s more play on the gi which could make it harder to get leverage and you can even lose the grip if you don’t have a good grip.
On a more serious note, if your opponent has anything like a cell phone in their d, shaking it and untucking it will make it fall out and you can win by DQ
Since I've only ever done Judo in Asia, I have thought the shaking is normal... My senpai(s) have used the lapel shake to gather more of the material around my shoulder. It feels like a tourniquet on my left armpit. While it does raise my left shoulder, it feels more like they're driving my shoulder into my ear and head. Maybe my senpai are just mean/care about me?
It seems odds to me to push their right arm into their hip. What does that enable you to do. Not saying it’s bad, I trust you know what you’re talking about, just if anyone can help me to understand? Thanks
This channel is amazing you know I've been to many judo clubs over the last 30 years and frankly the cririculum is extremely boring, it's also osoto gari over and over and you know what I saw students quit like crazy from boring moves that dont work...I think Judo needs to have an exciting syllabus ... something that works and that's what will grow the sport it's not a secret that the sports participation has plummeted in recent decades
I prefer Travis .......but I trained there too. Judo is watered down....and thats the reality. Imagine this.....in NYC mad Asians are getting crushed.....none of this has been a help. Food for thought and I have trained here.
@@johnhaworth7034 Jiu jitsu could really do with more of judo's technical standup. Although I myself prefer jiu jitsu because it hurts less as I don't have to practice falling over 100 times in an hour.
been telling ppl this for years so that they would stop low key slapping me in the face with it. Wish you would demonstrate this with an actual judo gi though, cause it looks really easy here mostly cause eugenes barely grabbing onto anything with that BJJ gi and it's tight sleeves
I'd love to be there the moment the Judo guy gets into a real street fight and his opponent does not have on a karate ghee for him to grab. That's the Achilles heel for Judo. I suppose the Judo guy could carry an extra karate ghee with him at all times and give it to the guy who's attacking him
I watch your videos to get ideas for take downs in Jiu Jitsu and this has helped a ton!

What a privilege to have you on RUclips.
The dojo is under the Japanese buddist temple in Manhattan. The statute out front was hit by our Nuclear weapons proudly. Come out and visit.

good point too. i find it's a great mnemonic aid to hekp me remember to pull pull pull for kuzushi rather than pushing or not doing kuzushi

There's a lot in there - really good stuff. First time I saw you got the red/white belt btw. Many ongratulations :)
Great insight! Keep up the great work and its wonderful to have you here on RUclips!

Doing the kuzushi with the shake
🙇

@@bjarnell it doesn't distract.
@@latetodagame1892 it certainly distracts some
Thanks for the tips this is really gonna help my Judo a lot. Love your content forgot to sub a while back.
Good explanation. You can also turn your palm down to the floor and drag your opponents lapel-holding arm down to loosen grips too.

Very helpful explanation. Gonna remember this for class, thank you.
Ok, definitely one of the best judo videos out there! Impressive
Thanks a lot!
One of the greatest posts here on this issue.
Love these videos!

This channel is so freakin awesome
Great content, so hope no one from my club sees this.
Do you have a video on the takedown series you did at 2:55?
Amazing video as always! Thank you!
Learned something new!!!
Shake your arm, not their gi. Got it.
I was just listening to you and Peter talk about this on the podcast.
Nice combo at 2:56
Colossal Osoto Gari too
Thanks for the insightful information master.
good explanation
Thanks Sensei!
Would it also be they they shake it to see how they would react to a potential throw?
"what is this.. ?!
it makes no sense.. !"
*Shakes GI violently*
that has made me laugh out loud for some reason xD
Good lesson thank you 🙏
6:00 is more like a Yama-arashi rather than osoto-gari, isn't it?
Nope
I shake the "Gi" once a day.
Oh shit its cousin Eugene!!! Love that dude
I always feel for the guy who gets chucked around 😂
That was awesome!
Awesome video

Best regards from BRASIL 🇧🇷♥️🥋
Ótimo vídeo!
It's because if there is any candy in there, it will fall out
So in short "Do not shake the Gi, Shake your arm"
So they are breaking and fending off their opponent's grips without letting go of their own?
I wonder if boxing coaches use judo to explain concepts

Why do judo with all of its rules, or you can just go do bjj and roll 🍥

I thought the shake was to loosen the Gi to get better handles.
my guess is that they like the sound it makes
damn I was wrong
Guilty as charged.
I was taught this was to take out the slack.
BRAVO👍
I shake the gi to annoy my randori partners. I'm training their composure 😄
agree
Shake the WHAT now?!
Ok now I know why a guy almost blew my nails away when shaking his Gi ,makes sense 👍🏼 thanks Sensei !
Awesome! This is so true you betrayed Japan

No need for a jacket if you go for a double or a bear hug and trip the legs… We know how to work without the gi, at least most of us
@@AljosaPLampe plus anywhere cold the jacket is no different than a gi.
I've been there, didn't go well for the judoka's opponent.
Grappling is grappling. The gi just adds extra handles for grips, but you can still do most of those techniques without a gi.
