  • Chanted by The Boston Byzantine Choir
    Chanted during Holy Thursday Service
Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung on the tree,
The King of the angels is decked with a crown of thorns.
He who wraps the heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is affixed to the Cross with nails.
The Son of the virgin is pierced by a spear.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
Show us also Thy glorious resurrection.

Read the gospel of John sister , if praising Christ brings you meaning , reading/hearing his voice will cut your heart to pieces. He died on a cross of wood, yet, he made the hill on which it stood. All so that by believing on him your sins are are paid for and you become a child of God , righteous before the creator of the universe who now calls you His own. Bless his holy name oh my soul how good God has been to me.

In the record above, the singer actually sings the words in this way:
Today He is Hung upon the Tree
He who suspended the earth upon the waters.
Today He is Hung upon the Tree
He who suspended the earth upon the waters.
Today He is Hung upon the Tree
He who suspended the earth upon the waters.
A Crown of Thorns crowns him
Who is the King of the Angels
He is wrapped about with the purple of mockery, who wrapped the Heavens in clouds.
He was struck who freed Adam in the Jordan
He was transfixed with nails, who is the The Bridegroom of the Church
He was pierced with a spear, Who is the Son of the virgin.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.

I learned this chant by the help of this video and performed it a year ago in the Matthias Church, Castle district, Budapest, Hungary on Easter high mass. It is a catholic (!) church dedicated to Virgin Mary (Matthias was a king, his name unofficially stuck to the church in medieval time, when he had a new bell tower built).
This year I could have not repeat that because of the epidemic...

As a youngster, I heard & learned this hymn in Greek. Nowadays, many parishes use English as their liturgical language. However, not all priests or choirs can sing Byzantine music without losing its "mystical or spiritual sound". Usually, it comes out very "tinny" sounding or, for lack of a better description, the result sounds very "American" -- not Byzantine. [] BUT, The has captured the mystical, spiritual essence of this Byzantine hymn with near perfection!!! ! I will have to listen to their other recordings now since they did such a magnificent job on this Hymn from Great & Holy Friday Matins. This hymn is sung on Holy Thursday night while the Priest carries the large Crucifixion Icon/Cross from the Altar out into the Nave so that the Faithful may venerate the image of the Crucified Christ. Not only are they expressing their love to Jesus Christ, but they are also begging for His Mercy. In return, the Lord is bestowing His Loving Grace upon all His people and strengthening them to endure the next two days' and the ensuing lengthy services in preparation for
    Sincerely yours, in Christ,

2019, riding my bike as I usually did during lockdown. New Christian, less than 5 months young, and this chant came on. Today, I am less than a year into Orthodo0xy, Chrismated and welcomed into Christs Holy Church, all because God led me to this angelic chant. I disagreed with Orthodoxy, but the detail and truth in chants made it hard to deny the truth within the beauty of these holy chants. For some, history changes their heart, for others, they are born into Orthodoxy...For me, the beauty of it opened my heart. Thank you, Lord...

The Boston Byzantine Choir was formed in 1993 by Charles R. Marge, with the goal of making Byzantine music accessible to the English-speaking world. The choir is a product of the rich chanting tradition of St. Mary's Orthodox Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.

Come now, people, let us not argue or be contentious over trivialities. The Orthodox faith is one faith, the one true faith, the same faith for all Orthodox. But the Church, being one church, is formed in various jurisdictions - a multiplicity within one faith, reflecting our One God in Three, Blessed Trinity. While Antiochian and Greek are distinct jurisdictions, the faith is the same, and the Church is one. Differences are not of the church, but are of us. For God created us different, each unique, yet calls us to be one in Him.

@Bert Clayton There are some things about the Holy Week services and readings that never fail to make me weep. The thief does it for me, always. I can't read it and not weep. Also John 14.1-4 from the twelve passion Gospels. I read those words of Jesus to His disciples at my recent father's and mother's funerals and it is written on their grave stone. It gives us hope and Jesus' love in those words never fails to make me weep. Thanks be to God for all things.

One comment for students of Byzantine Chant: This is the kliton encantilation of the doxasticon, that is: this itself is not plagal 2nd mode. After the encantilation in kliton (4th mode) the choir would antiphonally chant this doxasticon again in plagal of the 2nd mode.

Although anything is possible, I am very doubtful that this is either St Mary's Church choir - the home base of the Boston Byzantine Choir (BBC), or the BBC itself. The BBC choir does not have this protopsaltes on any of their other recordings, nor does this chanter perform with the choir regularly in church (although he could be a ringer). Nor does the BBC have a group chanters who can sing so deep as the ison here. The protopsaltes here also has a slight accent, which sounds Greek to me - and St Mary's is not a Greek church, which is not a great clue, but a small one. In almost all Boston Byzantine recordings, and in their services, there are female voices, very much unlike this all-male recording. Finally, the acoustics of the room are either digitally added, or reflect a very different church or concert building, with much better acoustics than either St Mary's or The Catholic church that this group usually records in. However, thank you for an excellent English version. Axios!

@@ryanbutela3183 i am Greek, i know what it says. The translation should still be literal. I ve seen so many of these totally wrong translations being the reason that Protestants fail to understand the Gospel and insist on their false believes.
I think the word should have remained wood, and its intention to hint the word tree should be sth that, as in Greek, would be explained to them. Pethaps in that way they d finally realise how srupid is their Sola Scriptura and that the Bible is meant to be understood through the Church.

The Cross is compared with the Tree of Life (which Christ chose, whereas Adam chose the tree of knowledge)...

This version is in Arabic. It would be interesting to see how many Muslims will hear this song and investigate the Gospel.

This version is NOT Arabic, it is BYZANTINE GREEK! I’ve listened to this hymn all my 56 years in this melody. You are confused. Those Arabs who are Orthodox, use Byzantine music. The tones/modes and special melodies are the same; just different languages.

why is the English version such a happy melody? it's a terribly sad and horrible hymn, about pain, torture, and sacrifice. it is dark, why the happy tune? original greek melody is dark and haunting.

I wouldn't say it is happy. It's very blissful in its tone but it's not happy.
