  • When there was a temple, the water ritual was performed on Sukkot. On each of the first days, the priest marched in procession to the Pool of Siloam and filled a golden vessel with water. Then he returned to the temple, accompanied by the people who recited: “Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation” (Is. 12:3). In the temple he walked around the altar with the vessel accompanied by the choir singing the Hallel Psalms. He poured out the water as an offering to God, remembering the water from the rock that sustained the ancient Israelites (Ex. 17:1-7; Nu. 20:1-13), as well as the rains that sustained Israel during the year just passed. It was also a prayer for divine provision of rain for the days to come. On the last day they marched around the altar 7 times, but did not observe the water ritual on the 8th day, "on the last and great day of the festival, Jesus stood up and raised his voice, saying: If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from within him." Jn. 7:37-38.
Happy day full of music similar to this, reconstituted based on ethnomusical studies with instruments from that time.
Reconstruction of music for Sukkot as it was played in the 1st century. This recording faithfully reproduces the chant as it could be heard 20 centuries ago in Israel.
The melody uses the instruments described in Tehillim (Book of Psalms):
    2 Syrink (flutes)
    1 Laud
    1 Kinor (harp)
    1 Guitienne (Guitar)
    1 Drum
    3 Hachoreth (trumpets)
    1 Seiselim (cymbal)
