I know so many people hate on Vivienne, but I think she’s just misunderstood! If you are on her good side and get to know her, she becomes like your posh, powerful, rich aunt, taking care of you, gossiping with you, giving good social/political advice. You may not always agree with her, and she might be snobby and judgmental at times, but she owns it and will be a great ally if you let her. Me and my husband often refer to her as “Aunt Viv” when talking about inquisition
I think she’s complex, I haven’t got far within the game yet but from what I’ve seen she’s proven to be very elegant, diplomatic, talented in magic, she’s like a mixture of Cersei Lannister and Naomi Campbell

I often find that hatred for Vivienne goes hand in hand with an underlying mysoginy, which often happens against women who speak up and affirm themselves as Vivienne has. It's not obvious, but it's there, under the hateful comments.

You dont achieve equality by questioning every opinion on unpopular female characters as being related to mysoginy. It's very silencing to people who just genuinely dislike her as a person regardles of gender/sex/race. This hyper focus on gender is not how we combat sexism, it's how we keep it alive. We should allow people to not like female characters and trust that the arguments given are the actual reasons. I wont deny that there will always be asshats who will dislike characters or have dubble standards for characters based on gender sex or race. I would also not go as far as to imply that all or even the majority of dislike towards her is because of mysoginy. I have seen a LOT of arguments on why people dislike her. Hypocricy being the main reason. Her being a mage, outside the circle, who is pro forcing mages into a circle. That rubbs a lot of people the wrong way. Buisides, Anders, a white male, is also very hated within the fandom. Depending on which corners of the fandom you go, Fenris, Sera, Solas, Morrigan, Oghren (and plenty of others really) get their fair share of hate. All characters will have their fans and haters, and the minorities of extreme haters and super fans tend to both be the loudest. Vivienne is amongst the most disliked in online communities, but so are Anders and Oghren (Oghren in part because he's such a mysoginic character ironicly). I'd be careful acusing people of mysoginy in this, especialy as DA has a history of women who speak up and affirm themselves just fine way before Vivienne showed up.
This game is freaking good. Love the chateau haine music returning from DA2 DLC. Truly, cutscenes are EPIC in this game and so grand and have style. Unbelievable that this game came out in 2014... it still holds up so well today.
Vivianne is my favorite companion in this game, and I agree with a lot of her point of views. Vivianne is, actually, one of the FEW things I liked of this game.

Maybe because she us a character designed to be hatable? She is a self admitted colt b*th, and unless you grind for her aproval she is mean and condecending to you. And from a meta perspective she us a bit like Tallis, you can't dusagree with her wuthout the game shuting you doen. There is plenty to dislike. She is very easy to please and doesn't disagree any more than any other character when met with opposition. People love Morrigan and she's about as hard to please. As a matter of fact, Morrigan has every personality trait that people claim Viv has without Vivienne's genuine care for the mages, yet its Viv who I hated and not Morrigan

I firmly believe there's a bit of sexism/racism that fuels the hatred people have of her. if you really analyse her political interests, she's arguably about as progressive as Leliana and Cassandra (that's a conversation that I think can be had, is all I'm saying), but she is very firm that she has certain expectations and standards that go beyond the performance of humility by her competition. And, I think the fact that her character is demanding and expects a lot from her contemporaries (which is a good thing, when you're trying to build a political movement btw) rubs certain ppl the wrong way. I do think if she was a sassy white gay dude (I say as a white queer person), the conversation would be so different. She has high expectations because she knows how important they are, otherwise the Inquisition wouldn't be taken seriously (similar to her experience climbing the ranks at court). But, to certain Vivienne haters, that comes off as 'uppity', which I have expressed for YEARS is super problematic. I really do enjoy Vivienne. She literally is the “I’m that confident, I will crush you” She is truly enjoyable when you want to befriend her. Don’t get me wrong I don’t always agree with her but that makes me enjoy her more. She’s very regal and passionate. But don’t get me wrong she can be warm and gentle when need be.

Well, just to say I don't hate Vivienne, but she's a very tough character; almost every decision doesn't influences her approval, and when it does it only comes out something like "Vivienne approves a little" or, on the negative side, "Vivienne disapproves a little"; just get on my nerves a few times, since I hate those "control" thing, I hated it in Mass Effect too, I don't like people with chains, I want they could get over their own situation with good support, so Vivienne wants almost everyone is under control, but how could you say to a child who is born with innate power and now must be locked up in a tower for almost the rest of their life (and that is if they do something wrong and they turn them into a tranquil), being controlled and looked down upon just because they carries a cane?
The thing is, Dragon Age works because it touches on real life parallels. Vivienne was that much needed Right Wing view. Conservative and playing the system for personal growth despite being part of a minority. I love games like this because when you get to know the people you disagree with, you learn more about real life counterparts. Sure Vivienne is pious, elitist and hypocritical seizing power while disparaging her peers. But, her beliefs are real, based on fear and a need for control to protect herself. Totally relatable. It doesn't make her popular, but it's still a valid motivation.
She is not hypocritical at all. She is one of the many mages who live outside the Circle and saw the Inquisition as a way to make all mages have the same chances and opportunities that she had. When she becomes Divine she crushes the College of Enchanters because they would be independent and would threaten the lives of the innocents, but when everything is under her control the mages rise to power and have freedom. She gives them a life of freedom, she tightens the Templars' leash and keeps the common people of Thedas safe. Vivienne never played The Game JUST for herself, she played for ALL the mages.

She supports a middle ground between having Circles and mages having freedom. Her reforms shows it and Mother Giselle herself gives good feedback about it. Just because she is Pro-Circle, loves power and act like an Orlesian doesn't mean she is selfish, she is strongly involved in politics and know everything about the Circle and Circle's politics, when it comes to the Circle of Magi, Vivienne cares about the mages and common people and not just her own power.
