  • Here is the 1973 Rex SL8 Superluxe, the basis on which the Naonis GL8 Bitermic was then produced (see video on my channel) and, since 1977, the more popular LS2/85 Rex (see video on this same channel). The SL8 is the Zanussi dishwasher model that transitions from the 3/dinamic system from which it inherits the Rilsan coated steel tank, albeit with a different shape, and the drive pump not visible in the video. A curiosity: Zanussi had already acquired the Zoppas, Castor and Triplex brands in 1970 and with these brands the fixed basket and poecellain enamelled tub dishwashers derived from Zoppas Stovella 056 were produced and sold, subsequently updated with various models (see video here on my channel) but only in 1973, with the start of production of the SL8 model, production was standardized for all the brands of the Zanussi group. Before that, Rex and Naonis were linked to the Zanussi design office while Zoppas Castor and Triplex were linked to the Zoppas design. Since 1973 the Zoppas and Zanussi design offices have been united and the Rotorack system with rotating baskets is definitively abandoned, passing to the classic fixed baskets with large steel sprayers mounted on the central ramp that feeds both the lower and upper sprayers. The 1973 SL8 introduces a unique Zanussi peculiarity: the partition between the upper compartment, intended for dishes, and the lower compartment, intended for pots and serving dishes. The function of this "bulkhead" was to create two functionally independent chambers with two different washing characteristics, the most important of which was washing at two different temperatures between the lower and upper basket in the same cycle, energetic at 75°C the lower one and, more delicate, the upper one at 55°C, hence the name Bitermic Wash. This temperature difference using a single water load was achieved thanks to the bulkhead and a system that interrupted the washing in the upper basket when it reached 55°C while the washing continued in the lower one until it reached 75°C. The bulkhead, making the washing tank divided into two independent compartments, prevented the boiling water of the second part of the cycle from reaching the more delicate dishes placed in the upper basket. The system will also allow the implementation of the new independent half load option in subsequent models such as the Rex LS2/85 (see video on my channel) in which it was possible to wash in one compartment while keeping the other completely isolated. Using a full-fledged half-sized washing chamber it was also possible to load 50% of water required for full load. In normal dishwashers this was not possible as even washing in a single basket requires a sufficient amount of water to also keep the unused part of the machine clean. This was the general idea, then trouble came, the plastic bulkhead, especially in the first series, tended to deform over time and limited the space available in height for the lower basket. When the machine was mainly used with only the 55°C economic cycle it tended to retain residues of grease on the intermediate bulkhead that formed deposits that were difficult to remove by the user, causing unpleasant odors, on the other hand, to those who used mixed cycles the problem did not occur as the water at 75°C, entered through the side slits of the bulkhead and washed off the surface, dissolving and removing any greasy residues before they could accumulate. By the way, on the recommendation of the manufacturer the service centers began to remove this bulkhead on the first occasion of intervention and soon it was eliminated in the new models, effectively eliminating the differentiated temperature washing function. For the first time Zanussi mounted the timer block as well as the detergent and rinse aid dispensers incorporated in the loading door, the detergent dispenser was no longer thermo-mechanical, but activated by an electric command. The removable filter for consistent residues that of the 3/dinamic while the recirculation microfilter is no longer plastic but stainless steel. On the dashboard you can see: the transparent window for checking the level of rinse aid located above the ignition light, two exchange buttons for selecting the temperature between 75°C or 55°C and the timer which also acts as a general push-pull switch. There are 3 programs: 1 with BIO pre-wash; 2 with cold pre-wash; 3 delicate, which is the special program for aluminum as in 3/dinamic. A small dot is visible in about half of the program 3 area, by placing the timer here you can perform the regeneration of the resins for the models fitted with water softener or the plate warmer function. The dishwasher accommodates 8 place settings plus the pots and is less noisy than the previous 3/dinamic but not as effective in cleaning. The 3/dinamic remains superior to all the "Zanussi" models that came after it, not to mention the current ones that are not worthy of consideration.
