Bob Day Sworn in as Chief of Police

On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, Robert (Bob) Day was appointed the 51st Chief of the Portland Police Bureau at a special ceremony at City Hall. Outgoing Chief Chuck Lovell administered the oath of office to Bob Day, who was appointed as Interim Chief by Mayor Ted Wheeler.
“Chief Day brings not only his vast experience and his commendable service record, but the vigor and creativity with which he approaches problems,” said Mayor Wheeler. “He possesses an unwavering belief in thinking outside the box, seeking creative solutions, and reimagining how policing can be a force for the greater good in Portland. I know we share the priorities of building bridges with diverse communities, fostering trust through accountability, and creating a cohesive community where everyone feels valued and safe.”
