Bob Day Sworn in as Chief of Police

  • On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, Robert (Bob) Day was appointed the 51st Chief of the Portland Police Bureau at a special ceremony at City Hall. Outgoing Chief Chuck Lovell administered the oath of office to Bob Day, who was appointed as Interim Chief by Mayor Ted Wheeler.
    “Chief Day brings not only his vast experience and his commendable service record, but the vigor and creativity with which he approaches problems,” said Mayor Wheeler. “He possesses an unwavering belief in thinking outside the box, seeking creative solutions, and reimagining how policing can be a force for the greater good in Portland. I know we share the priorities of building bridges with diverse communities, fostering trust through accountability, and creating a cohesive community where everyone feels valued and safe.”

    “As I step into this new role I do so knowing the city and the Portland Police Bureau is a different place than it was four years ago,” said Chief Day. “I am committed to working closely with the Mayor’s team, City leaders, the members of PPB and the community to restore confidence and move forward in a collaborative, holistic way with creative and innovative ideas to make positive impacts on public safety.”
