That’s a great way to describe the first 3 Dresden file books. The first time reading them they are pretty good, but compared to the later books they could be considered mid. I personally like the first 2 books just fine.

The protagonist was difficult to root for or empathize with. So arrogant. I liked how highly skilled he was, but I just didn’t really care what happened to him.
Is it weird that I don't hate the Crossroads of Twilight? I mean, I don't particularly like it, but I don't think it's a bad book. I gave it a solid 6/10 when reading it for the first time. Yes, 2/3 of the book is boring as hell, but the last third is quite enjoyable. And, without spoiling anything, my favorite moment was the Perrin one, not the last battle of the book.
Finally someone said why I was so frustrated dating, when I was trying to connect through a shared love of fantasy books and all they read was Sarah J. Maas.
There is not that many of us out there that love grim dark as well as sword & sorcery! I married a man who only reads non-fiction and will not even watch a tv show that involves a dragon.😀 Maybe you can settle for a woman who loves Stephen King or just find a woman that loves hockey or baseball.🤪
I prefer the First Law trilogy. If we're comparing just the first 3 books from ASOIAF, then those are easily better. But the last two bring the overall quality down a bit for me.
Interesting, the last 2 were in my top 3. I think the prose, worldbuilding and characterisation all improve over the course of the series, even if the plot tightness/pacing suffers as a result
Kings books are still some of the most horrific stories i have read. When stories are about the degradation of human mind you cant help but to pause because it's familiar.
I'm pretty new to fantasy reading, so far being most familiar with Tolkien and Sanderson, but eager to expand my horizons. Johan, I recommend you read the Empire Trilogy by Feist & Wurts! It is a classic that’s more modern than modern books. It is GOT before GOT. The heroine, Mara is so fantastic because she is likable with touches of Cersei Lannister in her which is just the right amount. If you love the first book, Daughter of the Empire, then go back and just read The Magician only before book 2.
Thr game of thrones books are definitely better than the First Law books. But I know they will never be finished. So if I were to recommend one to someone it would be the First Law.

On the classic vs modern sci fi, the idea that you need every single character to have an impact on the plot is just not true imo. Ideas can be as interesting as emotions. Space, planets, stars and the universe in general is endlessly exciting and fascinating, and not a single human is involved.
I agree with part of the first King hot take that in that his newer books are under hyped. I think some of his best books have been written in the 21st century, but the only one that gets recognized is 11/22/63

When an unpopular opinion is too broad, like saying modern SFF is better than classic SFF, I think the Pareto Principle (or my interpretation of it) is important to consider. 80% of everything is kind of shit, and 20% is gold. There was a lot of mediocre or shitty classic SFF but there were some undeniably epic stories. There are MORE SFF books being published in 2024 than there were in the 50s or 60s. Overall, that means there will be a higher number of epic modern SFF stories. Channels like yours help people home in on the really good ones and save a reader's time. Sorry guys, but it's a hard agree for me with the first opinion. I struggled a bit with the first Malazan book, but as long as I paid attention, I was able to have a decent grasp of what was happening. However, you have to read the books consistently. You cannot take too long of a break in the middle of a read before getting back to it, because you will get lost. But, this is coming from someone who hasn't finished book 3 yet, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Malazan is not as difficult as it’s reputation. Try Gravity’s Rainbow. First Law Is better. Traditional Fantasy is as good, and there is too wide a range in both eras to make a useful comparison. So much older stuff is basically forgotten. Can’t remember exactly what happened in Winter’s Heart, but not top 5. Crossroads was by far the worst, especially if you waited for years for it to be published. Stephen King is too polarizing to be over or under hyped. The people who love him seem to really love him. Rain Wilds is almost an entirely different tone than Liveship or the Fitz books. It tries doing some different, more YA, oriented stuff. It’s the worst of RotE for sure, but not so bad as the slog. On you tube, it seems like Epic Fantasy and Fantasy Romance are entirely different genres. The folks reviewing Malazan, for example, will almost never talk about a Fantasy Romance book. The only part of this I seriously disagree with was the slander of Crown of Swords. Just my opinion but Lord of Chaos and Crown of Swords are arguably the high point of the Wheel of Time. The pacing is better, the digressions were not as significant and by god we got some action and plot progression. I did agree that the ending of Wheel of Time kind of sucked. It was a lame anti climactic ending.
How do most of us all agree that WOT has objectively bad books in it and yet some of us still think it’s one of Fantasy’s greats. I read it all and I must say that I’d rather do manual labor than read any of those books again.

You didn’t ask Mike about book edges. Tsk tsk tsk. Disappointed

Not a Stephen King fan at all. I’m biased, though, due to his politics. His accident had a definite impact on his life that he has never recovered.
