I think that's actually the key to a good result. Since I started to approach sewing like that everything about it got better.
Traditional Chinese outfits, especially done the traditional way is SO HARD. My mum learnt how to make one the ‘cheat code’ way and the traditional way - the differences in the finish, the time and effort that goes into the measurements and lining things up is insane.

I only just started sewing but I've been knitting for 2 years. Sometimes projects just have to go in the corner of shame for a few months before I am ready to continue with them. I am currently finishing off a cardigan that's been sitting for 7 months and it's very satisfying now that I've gotten my energy for it back :)
I majored in Chinese art history in university and have lived in China for 5+ years now! I learned a lot about historical clothing to help distinguish time periods and styles in artworks, and I happily joined in on wearing some hanfu for work related parties! You have done such a good job! Can’t wait to see the reveal

The fabric you chose is so beautiful! Loved seeing the research on this as well. Tbh not having a finished project at the end of the video makes it feel more realistic as I go weeks or even months without one
Don't worry--it will all work out in the end. Put it down for a few days then go back and look at it with fresh eyes and rejuvenated brain and what is needed will just pop into your head!. The fabric is beautiful and I'm sure the dress will also be just as beautiful.
I love that you shared some history about traditional Chinese garments, it’s fascinating!! As far as making it a two parter, it’s so nice to have a reminder that things take time. I sometimes get stressed when I don’t finish making something by my own deadline, but it always turns out better when I take the time to do it right. Thanks for keeping it real with us!!
People always say "how did they manage it with hand sewing!" but can you imagine a life with nothing to do. Obviously I am talking of the upper class women who weren't allowed to work. They had no choice but to pursue "womens" hobbies like embroidery and sewing or drawing.. A day is reallllllllly long if you have nothing to do other than walk around your estate for the 30th time 🤔
We think of it as "nothing to do" but remember they were responsible for managing the household or estate (so functionally the general manager or CEO of small to mid-sized company depending on estate or time period) as well as maintaining the social connections (entertaining and charity work). Even if not doing the work themselves, they were making sure it got done. Don't know enough about Asian history, but medieval woman often ran estates for years at a time when husband was off to war, exploring, crusading, etc.
Edit- And even in the more recent upper class eras presented in period dramas, there was still a lot of behind the scenes work going on whether it was learning to manage the household or learning to social niceties to enable smooth movement through society. We see the strictly proscribed activities allowed during entertaining (which certainly would not appeal to most of us raised with more choices) but landed gentry had to learn gender specific skills and others considered necessary for both sexes such as riding, dancing, etc. It is true that some delegated so much they had "nothing" to do but that was neither required nor idealized.
This project is wonderful! I love historical costuming and I'm excited to see the end result, but it totally makes sense that such a challenging project needs more time to complete. I hope you continue to research and make hanfu in the future as it is such a beautiful style and it's rare to see English-speaking RUclipsrs making it.

I appreciate the transparency it's very encouraging. I also don't mind a two parter! I'm in the middle of three sewing projects that are taking longer than expected and I was starting to get so discouraged but this reminded me that, that's normal ☺️

I think it's incredible that you're sharing your sewing adventures with us and teaching us stuff about sewing and history/culture in the meantime!! So, for me, it's a no-brainer that it's you're decision to invite us into your sewing room whenever you want and with whatever project you want to show us, even if it takes more time than maybe initially thought. The projects have to be perfect for you and if that takes more time then that's OK
The hanfu is beautiful so far! And in a less fancy fabric would be very practical too. I don’t know anything about Asian fashion history but I watch a lot of western fashion historians. Back in the day, clothes were very expensive and would have to last a long time, so they would have to be adjustable to see you through weight changes and pregnancy. So western and Chinese fashion had different styles with the same goals. Thank you for sharing this journey and I am looking forward to part 2!

The skirt looks like that one that Christian Dior copied recently (I just watched a video about the Dior controversy the other day), but it seems to be one panel of fabric instead of two that overlap on each side. Is it related?
The big similarity is all those symmetrical pleats. They look at once beautifully simple as a design element and painstaking to make. Your work is lovely so far.
I think she wanted to make a Mamianskirt (the design Dior copied) but not making it with a split front because it is for a toddler...

Watching this video with my mom after I got 3 cheongsam from my grandma eariler today (they were from the 50's!! I feel like a walking time capsule when i put them on haha) I love that you're going for the hanfu styles they're so gorgeous, a project like this definitely needs time and love, can't wait for part 2!
Hi Wendy! I love this video. As an Chinese adoptée I am not so much in touch with my heritage and I am very much into sewing. So I find this video pointing out this pattern making book, regardless of the end, super interesting and educational ❤️. I'm going to get the book (and a lutterloh kit) soon! 😊
So I have studied Chinese for 11 years of my life now. To let you know that is currently half my life. And I have participated in a few Chinese events in which my friends have told me to wear a qipao. I don't have a place near me that I can buy a qipao from. I was going to buy one when I was in China but my goodness we did not have time. But if you be involved in the community there will come a time for the qipao. I'll get one someday. For now I have set to hanfu as I can not make fitted clothing. hanfu on the other hand is not fitted but fits to you. So I went on a very long journey to find patterns on the Chinese web to sew hanfu. I have completed the skirt. A very fancy waistband loop thingy situation which I am quite proud of. The waistband loop was not historical but it's just more convenient and put into modern hanfu. Now I just have to make an inner shirt and the robe. I can do it!
I love the pajama shirt, certainly would wear it. Oh, Wendy, they wore layer over layer. No central heating back then. Your dress will look different because of that. And manpower was plenty, out there a dress could take over a year, woven in form. Only rich people had more dresses. Sometimes only made for position and rank. So a silk or cotton underwear part, trousers and top with sleeves, same material for socks. Over that one layer of soft fabric totally covering all including sleeves upon the feet. In winter extra warm silk or linen covering. Over that, a brocade top with sleeves usually only covers the front top, back to feet. The more decorum, the more layers. Over that was another heavy woven brocade that was like a coat, long sleeves even covering hands and men could wear it open, females closed. Work people like farmers even wore thick quilted clothing. Depending on the money out of linen, cotton, or hemp. The way all closed gave either mourning or daily use. You stood straight up because of all the layers, it was way more covering. The neckline was the sexiest part of a female dress, the male had shoulder padding and belts in the waist, small was sexy too. Such a difference in the timeline for sure eh?

I actually really like multipart videos/projects. It's super satisfying to see from beginning to end regardless of how long it takes. Also, historical sewing is one of my absolute fave things to watch!

love the skirt so much, you can totally wear it with some other blouses as well, also seeing your jacquard fabric reminded me that i have this fabric with me for decades, it was gifted to my mom/aunt? idk, but it is really pretty, jewel toned green, the only reason i haven't got it stitched yet, we have summer season 11 months of the year and it gets really hot and humid here, i really hope i will be able to get it stitched this time because i love it so much!!!
I honestly don't watch for the satisfying finished garment, nor the sewing instructions, (nor the very helpful thrifting by favoriting suggestions). I simply watch to hear your calming voice and watch you use a sewing machine carefully and share your team and family in a very wholesome way. There's a teacher saying - the students will forget what you said and what they did, but they'll never forget how you made them feel. Wendy, you make your viewers feel like old friends and that's why I watch your content. Hugs.🤗 I hope the garment is everything you are hoping for.
"Idk how people back then did things by hand" Yep...I wonder that myself sometimes as I'm handsewing my ming-dynasty styled skirt (that I already failed by buying a non-ironable fabric so I'm just doing another gathered style skirt fabric).

I think what you said about the pyjama shirt is so spot on! I tried this pyjama shirt trend I was like nope, it's like going out in sleepwear. What you said about the trim colour and the print really helped make it less casual and made it seem wearable! Might actually try looking for one now and give it another go! It's really the little details that makes a look indeed.

As an Australian, we have had a very shamefully limited education about other cultures and I found this all really fascinating and informative! :) and as to making a two-parter: don’t apologise. I can’t even imagine the effort that goes into not only making the garments but then also editing all of the footage afterwards. We all know that the finished product will be worth the wait! And hey, if it really doesn’t turn out (which I doubt) then it was fun to come along for the ride.

i'm currently making a seljuk costume and the jacket/coat thing is pretty similar (which makes sense with the strong central asian/ turkic influence) except yours is soooo pretty! I didn't want to make a silk coat bc of money reasons so i found a cotton fabric block printed with a pattern ~close enough to the brocades of the times, but I have to say, this video has convinced me that if I ever make another one, I'm also choosing satin 💗

sometimes you just have to take a step back from big sewing projects because you just get lost in the sauce sometimes. I tend to do that and if I keep going I get very discouraged and my project just doesnt turn out the way I want. Thank you for having honest content!!!

Good luck with this project. The skirt looks beautiful the way it drapes and flows when you wear it. I can relate to a project not coming together as one would hope. My technique is decent but I always struggle with colours, patterns and weight of fabrics. Thanks for being honest.
