The Y-20 stands as China's first heavy airlifter, developed in cooperation between the Xian Aircraft Corporation and with support from Russian and Ukrainian counterparts. Same story when the J-31 came out. Everybody accused it of being a copy of the F-35, simply because it came from China. Then every other stealth design that came out since also looked roughly the same i.e. KAI KF-21, TAI TF Kaan etc.
To be frank, it's a bit difficult to accuse the Chinese copying the American transport plane. If you go on the internet, you can get plenty of pictures on the C-17, I can make a paper plane from these pictures at home, so can you accuse me of copying ? All planes look the same, they've two wings, engines, a nose and a tailfin !

When you are against air .you can not change appearance too much. thats why all plane looks same.
Look at the height of the wing box. They are completely different. C17 wing box is through the fuselage.

That is because the wing and engines are essentially plucked from the IL-76MD-90.

It has doeble slotted flaps which the C17 does not have. the structure indeed resembles the An-70 more than that of the C17. More sweep, different engines; it is no copy, it just looks similar. And besides; EVERY aircraft manufacturer looks at competing designs during development

It’s obviously a copy. Of course it doesn’t have the same engines. It has copies of them. China doesn’t innovate. They steal the designs and secrets from defense contractors and then build it with some changes they think will be better.

AN-70 program was on halt after the breakup between Ukraine & Russia, Antonov tried in vain to revive the program, but launched a revised version in the coming years, under new codename TTC Plan, with turbofans, prolonged fuselage and some other minor alternations.
Finally, TTC program found its ultimate buyer, the lavish Chinese military.....Years later, TCC was materialized in China as Y-20 strategic airlifter.

all of you guys are so incredibly ignorant, there are about 3 to 4 other cargo planes that have the same layout and design of the C-17 and Y-20... Airbus A400, Kawasaki C-2, Il-76.. And the IL-76 which was first introduced in 1971...while the C-17 was introduced in 1991...so the C-17 is a copy of the IL-76!!!!

C-17 not copy of IL-76. C-17 is a replacement/improvement for the C-141, which Ilyushin copied for their IL-76.

I just love China for supporting my country in every conflict and resisting to one of the strongest powers in World War II it does not deserve to hate that it has today plus the Y 20 looks more like an N 70 not like a C7 and it has more different capabilities.

For basically the same purpose and similar indicators, the optimal solution is basically similar under the same technical conditions.

My bicycle is made in China. One of the pedals is reverse threaded as one should be. But the Chinese are so stew pid, they reversed the thread on the wrong side making it so the pedals unscrew as you pedal.
Had they reversed the threads on the opposite pedal, the pedals would tighten as you pedaled the bike. The Chinese are so stew pid they didn’t understand this when they copied European bicycles.
Sometimes it’s important to understand what you’re copying in order to copy it properly. The Chinese obviously lack the capacity.

Chinese has more than capable of do better than any American can do. That can tell by the number of STEM graduated students between these 2 contries. Every thing is di6in Y-20 from C-17. It would go to An-124 way to load 100tons in 2024. Y-20 would achieve 150 ton load capacity in 2025-27.
Chinese can produce such a high end aircraft is what matters. Soon or later they will come up with their own designs.

It looks like a mishmash of a lot of aircraft. The Chinese are well known for copying other ideas, and maybe they did for this, but this is not a copy of the C17. We would need to go to Japan for that! C2 says hello.

The answer to the question is yes, it’s what they do, most of the time. They are good at making changes and improving the basic design after copying to suit their needs.
