The ember firmware is only needed for the Sonoff Dongle E. There's no Ember firmware needed for the Sonoff Dongle-P. If you experience issues starting Zigbee2MQTT after updating the firmware, then delete the Zigbee2MQTT backup file and try starting it again.
You're an absolute life saver sir. I'm running HASS OS in Virtualbox, and everything that could have gone wrong absolutely did. I spent about 3 hours today trying to get Z2MQTT setup today and you saved me. The only thing that wasn't in your video that I had to do, was open the dongle up and hold the boot button before I plugged it into my PC. Other than that, you got me up and running, and I'm a little to excited about being able to add Zigbee devices locally 🤣
Thank you for your kind words. It's actually strange that you had to open the case. This shouldn't be necessary these days. But anyway, great that you got it to work. 👍🏻
@@SmartHomeJunkie I thought it was odd as well. I plugged and unplugged that dongle so many times, and even connected to an old USB hub because I didn't have a USB extension cable. Once I held the boot button, it connected immediately 🤷♂️
Finally! Success! I have tried the hardware method opening the dongle and trying to set it into the bootloader mode, but it succeeded only once and when I had the upload file ready, I couldn't repeat the dongles mode change. Then I tried the Python methods without success, lot of software installings but no success after all. Even with this method I had to change the PC's port driver from universal to VCP in order to make the connection. Conclusion: Even if the device seems to connect to the PC COM port normally, it doesn't guarantee anything.
I've went through this process some weeks ago. For me the firmware flash webpage didn't seem to work. I can confirm, Z2M didn't start for me either after setting the adapter to ember. This is because your son off dongle was still running an older firmware before. An other fix is to first start Z2M with adapter still set to ezsp with the sonoff dongle e at the newly installed firmware from this guide. This will update your backup. After starting Z2M and confirming everything works, change the adapter to ember and restart Z2M
Can I ask, besides EZSP being depreciated, what are the benefits of Ember? Happy that I watched your video to update (which worked perfectly.. thank you :) ) but are there any advantages besides it being supported?
Theoretically, as well as being supported, performance is supposed to be increased and latency reduced by being, as I understand it, directly connected rather than via an interface.

I am getting this warning in the logs. Is it something I should concern with? My Aqara Water sensors have been recognized though. zh:ember: [ZDO] Device '64594' is only compliant to revision 'pre-21' of the ZigBee specification (current revision: 22)
it took me half a day to go trough this update, not fun at all. First for some reason this flashing web page did not work for me, dongle was visible but could not connect. Thanks to this I found some other way, there is an add-on that you can flash the dongle, and you don't need to even touch it, directly in HA, it is called "ZigStar Silicon Labs FW Flasher". However this add on was allowing me to flash only the actually recommended by z2m version, which is 7.4.1. ... and z2m didn't start after this. I tried many things, with removing the backup file from z2m folder, rebooting the VM and so on. Finally I have rebooted the machine and re-plug the dongle to different USB port. From this moment it is working.
Perfecte uitleg zoals altijd. Alvast bedankt!
I put latest zigbee firmware on my E because my P started playing up (incoming sensors perfect. Nothing outgoing.) so I thought I’d try reinstalling the firmware on the P but the bootloader button didn’t work. Had an E with thread firmware on it but as thread hasn’t taken off I didn’t mind too much converting it to zigbee. Get lots of network connection errors in Zigbee2MQTT about too many hops, but in blue not red and it functions fine. My question is do you think it’s worth trying the python script to put the P in bootloader mode and trying to resurrect it or shall I just bin (recycle) it? Going to see now if Zigbee2MQTT still has the E in developer mode.
There are some issues with adding new devices for some users running the ember firmware. If you see the error: zh:ember: Delivery of BROADCAST failed for "65533" You'll need to switch back to ezsp
Word of caution when updating to the new ember firmware. I spent hours trying to get Z2M to load after updating my Dongle E. Turns out that for whatever reason if you have an old Z2M coordinator backup lying around that for whatever reason Z2M will continue to try to load the old firmware preventing it from starting. I solved this issue by simply deleting the old backup after which all was well.
@@NPAB1066 To be clear it is actually the coordinator backup that I deleted. This is found in the Zigbee2MQTT folder in the Home Assistant directory. You can easily get to it using the file editor integration if you have it installed.
Thanks for the video! I had the configuration of zigbee2mqtt set to adapter: ezsp. Right after plugging the dongle back into my Homeassistant server I changed it to adapter: ember and restarted the Z2M-Integration. I got this following error: "Error: [BACKUP] Current backup file is from an unsupported EZSP version" after trying different things for a while I found the solution: Start Zigbee2MQTT with the EZSP-driver (adapter: ezsp) and let it run a few minutes. After ~ 10 minutes I changed adapter: ember and restarted. Then it worked. Maybe this helps someone else too :) I was wondering though: Why did you chose the "...zbdonglee-115200.gbl" not the "...zbdongle-230400.gbl" file? Both have the same version number 7.4.2.0. What's the difference between those?
Thanks for this video. Do you still have time to play the guitar? I imagine nearly all your time goes into the preparation, recording and editing of videos.
The flash page doesn't find the device serial port. I get this message after searching: If you are using Windows or macOS, install the Silicon Labs CP2102 driver. I try to download the drivers, but I get error that I do not have access to the downloads. I'm kind of stuck at the moment. (Update: Opened this page from the flash page on Edge instead of Chrome, and it showed the correct downloads.)
So I am using the Sonoff ZBDongle-E but everything works fine within HA. I guess I did mod it with the Silicon Labs Thread for the multibroadcast. Is that why it still works fine? Anything I need to do here?
As far as I understand ezsp is deprecated. That means, it will not work in the (near) future, but until now it still works. You (and I) have to updrade the dongle before this day.

I'm interested to know if this works with the P version as well. I've been having real issues recently with Z2M. Devices just stop responding after a couple of hours from a restart. Have tried updating and downgrading but it makes no difference
The P version has a different Zigbee chip than the E so they won’t use the same firmware. I’m pretty sure there is a video on this channel about updating the P-firmware.
I'm like you in that my coordinator is a Dongle P and I have a couple of Dongle Es as routers. Also interested to know if this can be done on the P and do my E routers need to run the new Ember firmware?
Very unlikely it died because of the warning now. Old version will work as well for a good time. Either you auto update to latest beta or something else is wrong with your zigbee network.

Great tutorial like always!
If you see the error:
zh:ember: Delivery of BROADCAST failed for "65533"
You'll need to switch back to ezsp
Hello, I'm currently using Firmware: 7.3.1.0 build 0 working with Matter and ZHA and it works well. Are you suggest to update to v 7.4.2.0 anyway?
Bonjour 👋 Merci pour vos explications 👍😉
Is it safe/wise to use the latest version
ncp-uart-hw-v7.4.3.0-zbdonglee-115200.gbl
?
Or stick to the one you use in the video?
Louis
Delete the z2m backup file and try starting it again.
Hello please advise where this back up is stored so I can delete it, thanks
@@NPAB1066 To be clear it is actually the coordinator backup that I deleted. This is found in the Zigbee2MQTT folder in the Home Assistant directory. You can easily get to it using the file editor integration if you have it installed.
@@NPAB1066 same , how to fix it
@@NPAB1066 ok very simple , just delete coordinator_backup.json in your /zigbee2mqtt/data folder
do a backup just in case , worked first try for me
Found the backup in the zigbee2mqtt config file, deleted all devices came back but were not connected gave up and reinterview 35 devices😢
are there any benefits after updating? I cant sense any difference until now.
I don't know. I only know that this firmware will be supported in the future and the old ezsp firmware will not be supported anymore.
@@SmartHomeJunkie okay.. for me it still worked
Does this also work for the Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus-P?
Maybe this helps someone else too :)
I was wondering though: Why did you chose the "...zbdonglee-115200.gbl" not the "...zbdongle-230400.gbl" file? Both have the same version number 7.4.2.0. What's the difference between those?
Thanks for this video.
Do you still have time to play the guitar? I imagine nearly all your time goes into the preparation, recording and editing of videos.
You are correct. Every video costs me at least 24 hours to create.
Good choice!
Hello my man. I want to go back to EZSP firmware. How can I do this? Can you give me a link please? Thanks
Why do you want to go back? It's no longer supported by Zigbee2MQTT.
How can I check the firmware version currently installed?
Thank you for this 👏
The flash page doesn't find the device serial port. I get this message after searching:
If you are using Windows or macOS, install the Silicon Labs CP2102 driver.
I try to download the drivers, but I get error that I do not have access to the downloads. I'm kind of stuck at the moment. (Update: Opened this page from the flash page on Edge instead of Chrome, and it showed the correct downloads.)
Thanks. Worked just fine.
Hello, just followed the instructions updated firmware all ok rebooted my x86 updated the config to ember but when I go to Z2MQTT all 35 devices have gone......had to go back to older firmware and ezsp any idea what I have done wrong ...please
I have a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus running ZHA. I have been 100% happy for a couple of years now. I don't want anything to change and I don;t want MQTT. Do I have to upgrade any firmware? If so what do I do?
Im also interested in this. Please write what you come up with.
thanks! very helpfull and easy to do!
I wanted to update my Sonoff (starting from scratch with Home Assistant btw) and it looks like the latest FW is: ncp-uart-hw-v7.4.3.0-zbdonglee-115200.gbl. Is that one good to go? :)
Dennis
Did you use the ncp-uart-hw-v7.4.3.0-zbdonglee-115200.gbl version?
And did it work just like the ncp-uart-hw-v7.4.2.0-zbdonglee-115200.gbl
version?
Louis
He Ed, I have the P and the E version. Does this also apply for the P version? And what to do if you use the E version as a router?
I'm interested to know if this works with the P version as well. I've been having real issues recently with Z2M. Devices just stop responding after a couple of hours from a restart. Have tried updating and downgrading but it makes no difference
The P version has a different Zigbee chip than the E so they won’t use the same firmware. I’m pretty sure there is a video on this channel about updating the P-firmware.
I'm like you in that my coordinator is a Dongle P and I have a couple of Dongle Es as routers. Also interested to know if this can be done on the P and do my E routers need to run the new Ember firmware?
@@daveforrester61 any update if it can be used as a router?
How do you know what .gbl file to get? What is the difference between 115200 and 230400?
So that’s why my Zigbee2MQTT died. I’ve been through a proper faff switching it all to ZHA.
come back to the dark side
Very unlikely it died because of the warning now. Old version will work as well for a good time. Either you auto update to latest beta or something else is wrong with your zigbee network.
Thanks for the video. I am trying to update a new Sonoff Dongle E I just purchased but the online firmware flasher can't seem to recognise the dongle. I keep getting the same error message :
Connection failed
The running firmware could not be detected.
Make sure the USB port works and if you are using a USB extension cable, make sure the cable can transfer data. Unplug the Sonoff ZBDongle-E and plug it back in to reset and try again.
I see a few others seem to have the issue but can't seem to find a solution.
Can anyone help ? Thanks
Have you tried the ZigStar Silicon Labs firmware flasher add-on in HA ?!
I'm having the same issue. Did you end up finding a solution? I've been working at this for days now and starting to give up
@@TheSweMusicMan Not sure about the OP but this isn't suitable for my dongle, since it doesnt support the EFR32MG21 chip

Will ZHA also start requiring EMBER?
Hi - I did the update - but did not work - i tryed different versiones of the firmware - but nothing helped - UNTIL i tryed to wirte adapter: ezsp - Now one can think that somthing vent wrong with the flash with new firmware - but it went ok - how can that be ?

Any idea ?
Is this only for die E-Dongle? What about the P one?
It's only for the E dongle. The P dongle is not ezsp.
Will all previous automations still work after the upload?
Yes
Is this als needed for the dongle-p?
does it show sth. like zStack3xo? As far as i understood you don't have to do anything if you have sth lik TI CC2652P + CP2102N. EZSP to EMBER is only required for chips like Silicon Labs with EFR32MG21 + CH9102F Chip
Changing the config to EMBER didn’t do anything, changing back to EZSP did the job. How can we solve this HomeJunkie 😊
Remove any backup in the Zigbee2MQTT folder and reboot the Host. So not only HA.

Is there ember firmware also if used as router?
I am also running one E as router and one as coordinator. Looking for some clarity on the same
After updating, all of my previous devices are gone. I restored the database file and it shows them there again, but they don't actually work. How am I supposed to get my previous devices to work?
I'm not sure what happened at your side. In my tests, the devices just kept working.
