Hello again, and welcome to another piano review at the Merriam Pianos RUclips channel. Today, we’ll be coming at you from the Robert Lowrey piano showroom in downtown Toronto, and reviewing the Schimmel Classic C 189 grand piano.
This is a fully German, hand-crafted 6 foot piano that is a real treat to play.

Piano Overview:
The C 189 is part of Schimmel’s Classic series, which is differentiated from the Konzert series in a number of ways, but in a general sense, the Classic series pianos exhibit a traditional German piano design, executed at a very high level. The scaling in particular has been refined with modern computer technology, but overall, the design here is fairly tried and true, as opposed to the more modern design of the Konzert series pianos.
What’s going to separate the C 189 from a similar sized instrument from another manufacturer, such as C. Bechstein’s Academy A190 from a design standpoint? The big thing is that the C 189 has a wide tail design, which allows for a larger soundboard, and a bass bridge positioned further back, accommodating longer bass strings.
Piano Tone:
The first thing that stands out is just how full-bodied the bass tone is. The sustain, likely due to the computer aided refinement of the scale design, is really excellent. The C 189 has duplex scale, which allows for sympathetic resonance across the entire range, and a non-tuned front duplex as well.
The treble here is actually more powerful than what you’ll find on the Konzert series pianos, which some people may prefer. Compared to other German grand pianos, the tone here is definitely on the brighter side.
Piano Action:
The C 189 features a finely regulated Renner action, along with Renner hammers. This means that the action will feel similar to folks who have experience playing other high-end European instruments. The key-dip is fairly down the middle and similar in feel to a Bechstein Academy or Grotrian grand.
The key-stick length is fairly conventional for what you’ll find in most 6 foot pianos, whereas the 6 foot Konzert version has an extended length key-stick for an extra level of control. Both actions are great out of the box, but you can definitely feel a difference with the Konzert K195 comparable.
Overall, a very solid action that won’t be too surprising to anyone familiar with an instrument of this caliber.
Cabinet:
The grand piano cabinets in the models in all of their lines is something Schimmel has clearly focused on. The in-lays are gorgeous, and the subtle styling accents are distinctive and elegant. The overall build quality is clearly very good.

Excellent presentation!!
Beautifully tuned. Lovely singing middle and upper registers. Inharmonicity seems minimal. They seem to have used computer tuning to set the stretch. Stu is an absolute wizard of improvisational harmony, in the same league as Gerald Clayton.

Another great video - thanks Stu! I picked up on your comment “the Kawai of Germany”. That’s interest. I would really appreciate a Schimmel vs Shigeru comparison in the 6 foot models, say SK3. You already hinted that there are some interesting differences in the results of the two companies taking a somewhat similar approach. By the way, you look ‘cool’ doing left footed pedal!
This video is great! I have a C213 and it is amazing. I see a lot of similarity here.
We are trying to decide if the c213 is a good piano and if we won’t be disappointed NOT getting the k230. For our space the c213 makes more sense but it’s a lot of money so we want to be sure!!!! Thanks so much!

Something about the bass didn't have me convinced, it was certainly present, but had a 'metallic' kind of feel to it that I'm not too fond of. Think I'm in the minority on this though!
The metalic sound is the harmonic partials over powering the fundamental. Usually this creates inhamonicity with the upper strings, but on this particularly instrument the bass strings are in tune with the treble. This is an interesting phenomena. Clearly the bass stings are metalic sounding. I would say that my Pianoteq Bluthner has a better sounding bass, but I use a comparatively small woofer to be able to get the upper partials in the bass strings to sing at high velocity. I think it may have to do with hammer voicing. If the bass hammers were needled and made softer, it could conceivable sound better. Another issue is that as fine a player as Stu is, he is at times a bit of a banger. Possibly he could modify is touch slightly to get more out of this instrument. The fact is, the upper register is absolutely lovely.

You had me laughing at the ‘bit of a banger’ comment! I reckon he plays a tad more harsh when he doesn’t connect well with the instrument. Because like you said, he’s a crazy good player.

I bought a C213 earlier this year. Its a dream.
The difference between the C and K is pretty subtle honestly-- side by side-- the majority is the action-- C being a little heavier.. Sound wise its tough to differentiate-- but agree most of the difference is in the treble.
I bought a K213 in 2003, after comparing it with Steinway, Yamaha, Mason Hamlin, & Bosendorfer, and have been enjoying it since. Years later, according to the piano store owner, as Schimmel made modifications to the K line, most of the old K models became the C (except for minor fallboard/aesthetic cabinet difference). So your C213 is probably the same as my K213. It seems Schimmel no longer has the K213. I agree that difference between the C and K is subtle, except for the action.
@@eliehrlich2031 They have very different sounds for sure. The Schimmel's have more harmonics. I definitely would check the Schimmel out. Stu did another review on the K230 that was a must to check out if you're in the market for a B/BB size piano. If you are in the southwest area, I would highly check out AZ Piano, as they carry both Schimmel and Mason & Hamlin.
Wonderful, my preferrend choice actually. The sound colouring is both warm and clear with plenty body unexceptionally well above the average. All is a matter of personal taste, but I do have the impression that Schimmel has overtaken many in my book, certainly Steinway & Sons. Bechstein next at Schimmel :)

There is certainly enough space for the C189 in a 7 m x 5 m room. In terms of whether the piano might be "too much" for the room in terms of volume and musical output, it is a bit more difficult to say without assessing the acoustic response of the actual room. Furthermore, those types of considerations often come down to the preferences and tastes of the specific player. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

Nice piano but far too expensive.
The C189's pricing is quite parallel to other top-end German made grands in its size and quality category.
why, oh why do they always paint the plate in that hideous crazy carrot-orange? has all aesthetics and common sense left us all for good?
It's hard to find a really good gold paint. Maybe they should paint it a metallic gloss black.
It is striking....Bosendorfer does something similar
