The evolution of rock & metal memes / meme review is here! Some of what I cover:
* The "impact font" years of cringey metal elitist and emo/scene kid memes
* How pop-punk memes raised the bar
* The modern era of rock and metal memes and why I just want to look at anomalocaris memes and listen to The Story So Far

16:20 Yes! I would put it on repeat and send it to all of my friends 😂
I liked this video, it was fun
More F@RTS!
Looks like Papa roach took your advice on getting with the times btw! 😂
Ah I remember those all days. I remember being very confused about how something like Whitechapel or Suicide wasn’t metal. And elitists being like “skinny jeans are gay” but then you look at an 80s picture of Megadeth or even Pantera and they’ve got the tightest jeans imaginable.
Ya know, that's absolutely true and I'd never thought about it like that. Huh.
Honestly no one hates metal chicks more than metal dudes. They’re their own worst enemies lol
Yup
I never understood this
And then they wonder why they're still single!
They're usually psychopaths so...
Yay someone said it lol very true
Black metal guy saying "fuck chvrches!" when i saw that i was wondering why are you so upset with the hipster synth band Chvrches
hahahaha
Chvrches' first album is a stone-cold classic front-to-back. Literally not a song on that album that's less than solid and the highlights are fucking transcendental. If any whiny-ass trve kvlt black metal nerd came at my peeps, you know there would be trouble.
I used to be a metal elitist. I’ve been watching your channel for a couple of years. It has humbled me so much. Also, I’m almost thirty now and I don’t have time for any of that stuff. Now, I just live and listen to what I want and let other people do the same. It is so relieving to just do my own thing and be chill. Thanks Finn.
🥳
"No matter how well you think you know someone from the internet you only know the version they show to the public"
Me: lives in a fantasy world where Finn and I are friends and I give his cat a treat to tell her how important she is to the world.
Apparently a lot of these “wtf?” Medieval paintings you see were actually just shitpost memes themselves.
Pretty much! Medieval marginalia made by bored monks trying to be funny and get the other monks to laugh.
I remember seeing a lot of these memes forever ago, good times!
Love yall
@@AwhhhhAdam I mean, you’re not wrong 😂
No Harm's Way Running Man?
Ah. Human of culture.
This video had me laughing my ass off, I would definitely love to see more fast-and-loose funny videos like this
Agreed
As a metalhead, I approve of watching Finn roast the community.
can we finally have the conversation ab how emo bands/emo metal core lowkey took advantage of emo kids being depressed and 1. got a savior complex (of mice and men talked ab "saving lives) 2. created rlly fake positive savior songs and all this made money off of keeping emo kids sad and only able to look up to bands for happiness. i dont think it was just the kids, i think some in the music business took advantage and made a market off of it
They absolutely did
Oh man! They definitely did this! I remember cringing so hard at BVB playing Download Festival in 2012, they came on and tried to give this big heartfelt "fuck the bullies be yourself, we're here for you!" speech which came across so disingenuous. People laughed and threw bottles of piss at them and then Andy was all "missed me, try again" and actually got hit with it ...
@@ra_lo_wa i was re painting my room the other day and i just put on a random spotify playlist (i was always more asking // early bmth // ptv kinda "emo", but i do still love them bc if they talked ab struggles it was their *own*) and oh my god i couldn't believe how up their own they were. everyone always laughed or wondered why emo kids were so sad and depressed seeming,, well. some of us were actually really mentally ill and i look back and get lowkey mad they took advantage of us like that
@@alyssamangum2535 yea I was suffering from (and still do to a lesser extent) some pretty serious MH problems, thankfully a bit too old for BVB, but there were definitely bands i listened to that took advantage of that kind of fanbase. I cringe so hard now! And I feel bad for kids who are now in that position.
now that you've said it i can definitely see it :/ especially with bands like bvb, fir, mcr i can actually see what you've said it makes sense and i feel a little exploited and annoyed ngl because i really looked up to these bands so much and it wasn't even that long ago and to think that people would literally use the fact that their fanbase is suffering as a token for fame and money is disgusting to me.
honestly i still haven't figured out what " the real metal " is and i have been listening metal music my whole life
In their logic it's basically anything that isn't Iron Maiden or Megadeth isn't real metal
@Kodaka i can hear J.K.Rowling in the distance
And neither have the elitists :D
But I'd say it's kind of save to assume that everything which came after 1990 is not trve and neither is anything that draws inspiration from anything outside "the real metal", death, suffering, violent crime, sex, paganism, satan, drugs or horror. Or The Lord of the Rings. It's bascially like the dynasties of OId Egypt. A lot of incest, mostly dead and those who still move kinda smell funny.
It's really easy actually. Everything that you like is real metal, everything you dislike is not real metal...
@@Andrew-wh4qm I was about to say that. If you're angry or insightful (thrash vs Maiden) it's metal. If you're gonna cry like a bitch (shout out to Godsmack my favorite butt rock band) then it isn't. It's stupid and overly simple but it's the rules we live by.
Maybe it’s because I’m from the Midwest, but I’ve definitely heard multiple people call sleeping with sirens and pierce the veil metal lol
Euro here, can confirm if you shred guitar on a festival and lower your expectations enough this meme is indeed accurate
Can't forget the self-deprecating "local musician" brand of modern memes, all about having crowds of 10 or less and never practicing. Solid gold every time.
What about all the metal-nerds saying: "Well actually.... we can consider this to be the modern equivalent to mozart/classical music" while listening to pig noises over a downtuned guitarsolo and blastbeats
The starter-pack starter-pack.
That "ska-guy" hat is frequently worn by Corey Taylor, and it's not a good look for him in my opinion.
So I'm not a European national, but I did live in Germany for a long time and in my experience, people are a hell of a lot less judgemental about what type of music you listen to. I went to a lot of shows there and you'd see all types of people there and no one thought anything about it or gave them a hard time. Not even at Bad Religion, which had old German crust punks as well as teenagers wearing pastels. Germans are very much about minding their own business and leaving people alone.
Lived in the Netherlands, now in Germany, can confirm, great comment👍
I'm Italian and can confirm, also sexist and homophobic jokes are not a thing anymore here luckily
BR is for everyone though. Old and young alike
@@alejandroramirez4470 Not saying they aren't. But what I'm saying is: I've seen BR in the states and in Germany. In the states, it was mostly older crust punk types who were very judgy towards the younger kids there. They're not "real punk" etc. I'm Germany there was none of that and they just co-existed peacefully.
@@dead_beatbunny well I haven't been to many shows and maybe festivals are a bit different but I haven't come across gatekeepers. I'm in my 20s and feel like anytime I could be questioned about the merch I wear. I even sometimes question if people younger than me listen to the musicians they have on their shirts. Even though I know we all have access to the internet to find old and obscure groups. Sadly with digital distribution we still don't have it all and sometimes we have to find a CD or record
I appreciate the new Vegas randomly in the back ground
The only good modern Fallout tbh
And Metal Gear
And cocoa pebbles
Fallout is life
And 08th MS Team
"I'm confused. I have questions"
yeah this pretty much embodies me trying to understand people
That Costanza meme. "She said she liked Modern Baseball, Jerry! How was I to know it wasn't the sport!" *Kramer walks in with Front Bottoms tickets*
We need the evolution of fart jokes in Pop Punk
from the Germs to the Shidiots
Poop Punk
I think this is my favorite video of yours so far 😂😂😂 keep it up man
Crazy how the Infant Annihilator vs. Deathcore BMTH beef was real but now every day I see a topic on r/Deathcore asking "Albums similar to Count Your Blessings?"
I’m kind of confused how that was even a beef. IA didn’t really come out until like what 2013 ? By that time BMTH had completely left the Deathcore genre.
reddit threads with that exact title are how i found Humanity and Allegiance, and coincidentally Horizons by parkway drive
Not really a beef it was more just Deathcore fans online constantly shitting on new BMTH. It was like that "Friendship ended with _. My new best friend is _" meme
can anyone actually drop some albums like cyb tho...? i absolutely adore that album i cant seem to find anything like it
@@emzic8279 check out the albums i listed in my other comment, unfortunately humanity was taken down from spotify but its on youtube
Never thought I’d see the day that Finn makes a video about the history of metal memes (lie, I’ve been expecting this for a long time)
The bad memes suddenly became funny b/c of your delivery, nicely done!
Thank you!
Happy to see Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in the background
The actual best game of all time imo
I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves!
@@onionheadguy7094 Yakuza is the GOAT.
@@ThePunkRockMBA I agree.
WHAT IS A MAN?
The 'Metal music then vs Metal music now' meme is so weird. Like have you seen Hetfield in the mid 80's? Man looked like he was still going through puberty. No disrespect to papa Het, love that ol' grandpa.
15:20 it was really cool of Finn to put me in this video!!
Yes, I hadn’t learned the difference between the genres yet, and I joined a metal group on Facebook, I listed sleeping with sirens as one of my favorite bands. I was very quickly told to go kill myself by a bunch of the members. The bullying was so bad I had to leave that group.
my favorite is still the sad looking kid with the SOD shirt, sitting on the bench.. Do you ever think you'll talk about HCWW? I don't know anything about it, but i was thinking more about Hardcore music around the world
Growing up in the 90s (and late 80s), that "Metal music then vs. metal music now" meme is just hilarious, because most of the points on the "metal music now" part were exactly what "normal" people thought about the metal guys back then. "Iron Maiden? That's just noise and screaming." "Omg, look at you with your long hair, you look like a girl, get a haircut and grow some balls." And it didn't get more "gay" than "hair metal" and "glam metal". Or Manowar. I mean... oiled up muscular men in leather thongs...
As a European i can confirm that this is how you get treated as a metalhead Here.
Feels like the "I Like Hardcore and Pop-Punk" starter pack is really trying to call out Austin Dickey.
Ayyy the meme I submitted made it! (The how your notifications look after making fun of black metal one lol)
One of the best episodes yet man, that whole thing about how memes help us forget about the void and death, ooooofff magical. Thanks man
I just wanna say I appreciate seeing you wear all the shirts for bands I get roasted for listening to like emmure and the acacia strain like thank you someone else gets it
Oh man....... as an emo kid who used to troll metal myspace forums in 2007 until I got dozens of death threats. The first part of this brought me back
That George Costanza gem just killed me hhahahahaha
Dude I busted out laughing with my headphones on and my husband is like “wtf is going ON!?” 😂😂
Just finished - easily funniest video I’ve seen from you yet. I love your commentary format here, going through each meme while inserting bits of Finn humor. My favorite bits are when you actually start laughing while ya go through a meme 😂
Loving all of these out of context mecha clips you have going on in the background.
Music memes have definitely made my instagram experience a lot more funny - shoutouts to pageformusicchads! My girlfriend has ended up on pop punk tiktok when we have nothing else going on and we've absolutely CACKLED at some of the stuff the kids are coming up with these days. We're definitely in a meme renaissance.
The best meme-sub genre are and will always be the deep-fried, surreal and badly edited Facebook-screenshots on Pinterest and Instagram about The Used or MCR! Like these things are modern art and you need like a minimum of five years of context knowledge to understand them, but it’s sooo worth it!
As a hardcore head, I totally 100% absolutely agree with the meme that said "how to ruin someone's night" 🤣
Also really appreciated the Irate clip after 💪
I had a female coworker tell me she was into metal when she was younger. She said Avril Lavigne was her favorite, I just thought it was funny.
I also had a male coworker tell me that there were better emo bands than The Mars Volta, like Green Day..... so 🤷🏻♂️
Damn bro my favorite is neck deep and i only wear oversized t shirts lmfao I'm rolling
That "Disinfect Your Surroundings" meme might have been the hardest I've laughed in my life. I love dumb jokes.
I laughed so hard I dropped my phone!
Always love your videos Finn, make another Big Four of Something, I really enjoy that
As a Swede i can confirm that wearing an Amon Amarth shirt while raiding a cathedral on a Sunday is the highlight of our week.
But unfortunately i haven't seen any girls around
This comment should be a meme! I died laughing.
Your videos are the one of the few things that can get me to stop working or skating.
Who’s been reading Kierkegaard, what with all the absurdism and existentialism going on?!???
A) talk about farting more.
B) I wished you showed some of the Danzig memes, that man is meme gold.
Bruh the way he said "before I let you go" in the end got me feeling like I'm in his music class.
I really enjoyed this, blast from the past. Watched the whole video, even the Skillshare ad. The background clips are a nice touch.
the fact you added Gundam in the background is the shit Thanks Finn!!!
When the breakdown is so heavy you headbang yourself into a donut will always be my favorite.
2014 sad boi pop punk was a MOOD! Loved this video Finn, hoping you choose to do more!
Really enjoying the new video format. You are way more laid back and seem to have more fun.
Cyril Giraud memes! Fuck he is a genius. I almost spat out my water when you showed that first meme.
My Xbox gamer tag is from a Cyril Giraud meme. Which I’m 80% sure I got put on from you.
This was a fun video, I always like seeing the memes on your Instagram. But, bro, you said Anomalocaris, but showed Opabinia, poser. 😉
I loved this. I wouldn’t be upset if you made a couple more of these.
The first metal/hardcore memelords were Spazz and Von. Everyone else is just catching up.
I’m a few years late, but I just recently came across one of your videos during the “why people hate” series and I’ve just been going down the list of videos since. Good stuff!
the rob & big cribs clip that played in the background. boy that takes me back
This is a great format, more videos like this would be tight if you want to make them.
Dammit, Finn 😂 Don't change a thing. Your videos are full-on hilarious and seriously make my week. lol
This editing is beyond godlike please do more of this.
this was a nice trip down memory lane and seeing memes i saw as a teen
It makes me happy knowing that Cyril Giraud is still posting memes to this day. A true visionary!
I’m literally wearing one of those ska hats in my Facebook profile picture. 😬
This is the content I've been waiting for
the best metal meme has got to be the 'I dont really listen to metal anymore' starter pack. I just know way too many people exactly like that
I fucking lost it at the Candlemass meme, haha
Father time is coming for me. Time to get my snap back hats. Maybe I'll start wearing trucker hats and try to bring those back. lol.
I’ve been wearing scully caps since 93-94. I have no plans of stopping lol
this was great thanks for this
Not the frozen fajitas from Safeway 😂😂😂
Finn, you caught me off guard with Irate thrown in after that cammo meme. Good taste as always, bro.
I'm from Europe and can confirm that on the top of every mountain is muscled long-haired man playing his guitar with naked women crawling around him.
'Is this person a nu-metal fan or a prog metal fan' was the point when I needed to look in the mirror and then at my playlists and realise how polarised my favourites were. Then he went to the podcast plug and I gasped at hearing 'Periphery' and seeing Matt's face... then proceeded to the podcast. So yeah.
The late 20s getting into hockey is gold. When ever we play pick up it’s smart to avoid the dude in a violent gentleman shirt who spent his day beating off to old George parrors fights. Like dude it’s pick up no I’m not gonna fight you. 😂
Thanks for the content!
Ppl in Europe wearing Amon Amarth shirts are very likely to call you slurs and pass out drunk somewhere next to the stage at festivals
Should change name to "the Death-Core MBA"
the youngest crop of metalheads is the best. The scene is dead so we listen to whatever there is out there. Being a poser doesn't really exist in our generation because there isn't really a scene in our age group to be a part of. Playlists go from burzum to korn to bones, and everything in-between. Basically listen to what you think sounds cool.
I have nothing complex or profound to add, but I wanted to say this is a great video. I had lots of laughs. Ty
If your Meme has more than one sentence you should delete it.
True! At that point you're blogging, not memeing.
best metal meme lately to me is how everybody was off to kill euronymous back in 1993
I loved those memes!! 😂
Last year me and another promoter in my area had a meme war because we both booked a show on the same day. Some fans got really salty but we both were having so much fun with it
Finn, nice work with the MGS1 backing video. The psycho mantis battle was my favorite.
You should do some throwback album reviews. There is a band called Codeseven with an album called Division of Labor. It came out in 99. It's the best melodic hardcore album most people never heard. Definitely ahead of its time. It's worth the listen.
That farting intro went on like 5 seconds too long lmaooooo
I remember a lot of these. Now at 35, I just don’t hate any music anymore. There’s just stuff I listen to and stuff I don’t.
Man these are great.
YES - love that you put a Cyril Giraud bit in there. Been here since the Sergeant D HNIC days!
I enjoyed this video more than I thought a video about old memes could entertain me 😂
Straight to Your Face! Thanks Finn love your channel
3:48 Death note opening video
Fellow European here. Wearing an Amon Amarth t-shirt sadly does not get you loads of girls.
The amount of people I've seen wearing those style of shirts on nights out who get no female attention is pretty high.
As an European I cringed to death with that 9:25 lmao. I hate that ‘tough guy’ old metal fashion
