THANK YOU LYN FOR THE MENTION AND SHOUT OUT! 😁 Such kind and lovely words you said, was not expecting that 💚🤗
Fantastic to see you are Sowing Lithops seeds... Can't wait to see them grow for you... They are so cute when they are tiny! They don't take very long to germinate, mine do so after about 2 or 3 days, and they can do so in waves. Also they don't need high temperatures to germinate, like most cactus would. And you should get a high germination rate because Lithops seeds are better if they are stored for a while before sowing.
Happy Growing Lyn! 😆Love the seed Sowing videos! 😊👍🏻🌵🌼

@@desertplantsofavalon That's great news about the Lithops germinating already... and you are Sowing Pleiospilos too 😁...
I do have 6 little 'seedlings' of Pleiospilos I grew from seed and some Lapidaria margaretae. They are nearly 2 years old now but still small, smaller than I think they should be, and in the same 5.5cm pots 😆 It was the first time I tried to grow them... I think I should repot them now you've reminded me, they look like they need a new pot! ... I think I will grow some more of both of these too now I have the grow lights to help 😆

Thank you muchly for the tutorial. Lithops are thoroughly fascinating plants, considering they are native to Namibia, parts of Botswana, and South Africa, they must surely be a relative of the leafy succulent, and with time evolved to lose leaves and the stem almost entirely.
Having visited this part of the world in 2013, I can confirm the deserts here are exceptionally hot in the summer, and subject to extreme UV radiation. Rainfall on the west coast is in short supply and high pressures dominate, keeping the weather nearly always sunny. Like in Chile, the deserts in Namibia and north western South Africa will literally come right up to the beach.
These are plants probably best suited to a grower with a moderate level of experience due to they're great sensitivity to watering. However if the seasonal regimes are followed, the flowers and new leaf growth are very impressive for their size.
I will certainly have a go at growing these one day, and will definately come back to this video for some extra info. Those who stop learning stop getting better!. Thx for posting!.

@@desertplantsofavalon I am so sorry for your loss, I know it can be heartbreaking. You could try spritzing the soil occasionally with 30% hydrogen peroxide diluted 4 x in water [that's the weakest dose] even before fungus shows up. It will give some oxygen to the roots and kill any spores that may be brewing under the surface. Repeat weekly maybe? Alternatively, if it's warm enough remove the lid for a short time [an hour or so, to ventilate]. Hope this helps. PS I know your knowledge and experience is far greater than mine, just wanted to help if I could. Please keep us all informed on your other attempts.

Hi, sorry can I amend my comment - To eliminate Fungal Infections [from the web]
When the plant needs watering, flush water with a 1/4 cup of H2O2 3% with 4 cups of water. Water heavily until the mixture drips out the drainage holes and the soil is fully saturated. Make sure to tilt the pot as you go to cover all areas of potting mix. It says to avoid the leaves, but when I get fungus on the leaves due to wet soil/poor aeration, I do spray the leaves and it seems to get rid of the fungus on the leaves. Happy Mayday xx

Before we had microwaves, we would sterilize soil in the oven. We would make sure that the soil was very moist because it was the steam generated from the water in the soil that would penetrate into the soil and sterilize it. We would fill an aluminum baking pan with the moist soil, cover it tightly with aluminum foil, and place it in the oven for about an hour at 300 degrees(Fahrenheit). Usually before we finished, the whole house would be filled with a horrible smell, but the soil would be sterile.
When you microwave sterilize soil, make sure it is well moistened and in a closed container with a small vent to prevent the steam from exploding the container. The principle is still the same; to generate steam that will penetrate and heat the whole mass of the soil.
Up until the seventies, there were chemical fungicides that we would use to prevent damping off, but the chemical was a compound of mercury, which would get into the sewers, then the streams and lakes, and finally the sea. The fishes in all these places would absorb it, thus poisoning the people who ate the fish. By the seventies the levels of mercury in almost any kind of seafood were reaching dangerous levels, so mercury products were banned. Other chemical fungicides were found to cause cancer, so they ,too, were banned. Commercial greenhouses sometimes used to treat soil with formaldehyde, but that was so dangerous that nobody tried in their homes. Now heat sterilization is the most effective method.

What is your experience with balloon cactus? I didn't water it all winter and it shrivelled. I finally watered and it still looks funky but it is firm as far as I can tell. I looked at a few pictures and noticed that these are a bit 'different' looking. By the way, just got a new opuntia to be a companion for the cactus that almost died and I'm excited. Hi Anna :-D thats wonderful you are looking at getting another grow light, the one I love to use is the Mars Hydro SP 150 Grow Light, I have had this light for two years now and its excellent, it gives off a lot of light and it covers the whole of my 6ft long table with light, I have tried a lot of different grow lights over the past few years but this one wins tops every time, here is a link to a video on the grow light when I made an unboxing and installation of the Mars Hydro SP 150: ruclips.net/video/eAtcbHaasqw/видео.html thanks so much Anna for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

Hi Lyn been watching your videos for years
just sewn some lithops but im kiciking myself cos i realised its basically winter lol,
my window insulation is quite bad so cold but offers direct light
do you think i should put them there or should i keep them away from cold and in indirect light? Thanks

Hi EJ :-D so happy you have been watching my videos for years and thanks so much for your longtime support :-D the good news is Lithops and the other Mesembs are one of the few succulent seeds that can be sown in Winter and will still do well, I think that you should move your seed tray to a warmer indirect light position, as a position too cold may prevent the seeds from germinating as they need warmth to germinate, your seeds will still germinate in indirect light and may even do better as I often get better success when I grow seeds in a bright but sunless position, once the seedlings are large enough ( about half a cm wide ) they can be moved to a sunnier position or you can install a small LED grow light over them, but that most likely won't be until next year as Lithops are very slow growing, good luck with growing these cuties from seeds and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, Wishing you a fantastic plant powered Sunday today XXXXX
