I was given this album in 1982 when I was 14. I "worked" at a record store in Dallas and my pay was a record of my choice. I rode home with my Tug Of War, loved the album, but "Wanderlust" was the one I played over and over. And then "Somebody Who Cares". I was shocked and horrified when Pipes Of Peace came out. "Say Say Say" was a promising tease and I, again, worked to get that album, brought it home and was highly disappointed. Songs like "The Man" and "So Bad" was the start of the end for my Paul McCartney ride for almost 8 years at that point. The song, "No More Lonely Nights" and Flowers In The Dirt were exceptions and then Flaming Pie made me respark my interest again along with the Anthology sets.
Great review. I agree with 95% of your entire review. This one of the times your review is spot on. Cheers!

The other me, Pipes of peace and through our love are pretty decent tracks?? Pipes of peace was a huge no.1 hit in the UK, and it did well on the charts all over Europe. "Say say say" was also a great track, and a huge hit, so i think "Pipes of peace" did it`s job in producing hits, and good songs. There are a couple of bad songs yes, but that is the case on every album. Skip the bad tracks, and enjoy the good ones. That`s my advice. Btw. Speaking of lousy McCartney albums. You should have seen my face the first time i listened to "Wings wild life" and "McCartney II" I was shocked over the lack of quality.

The pound is sinking is way underrated. Good point

I demand a recount, 7.6 is way too low for what it deserves.

This album is a solid dime on every level. He hadn't hit that mark since Band on the Run. And hasn't come close since then, sadly.

The solo instrument on "Ballroom Dancing" is a clarinet. I also love the horn arrangement. Also, the funky break.

A lot of the tracks were due for a proposed new Wings album - there are Wings demos online for Take It Away, Ballroom Dancing, part of The Pound Is Sinking and Ebony and Ivory. The remaining Wings demos wound up on Pipes Of Peace. I think it’s great - superb opening 3 tracks, and Dress Me Up As A Robber is brilliant.

This album is a gem. I`d give it 9/10.. The production is flawless, Pauls voice is fantastic (did he ever sound better vocally), and the songs are very good. "Wanderlust" and "Here today" are classics which would have been highlights on any Beatles albums. There`s a couple of "weak" tracks on here like "Dress me up" "Get it" and "What's That You're Doing?" but even the weaker songs on "Tug of war" are NOT weak enough to lower the score of the album. This is on my top three list of greatest McCartney albums of all time. 1. Ram. 2. Band on the run 3. Tug of war. Paul`s vocals on "Wanderlust" is worth the whole album for me. Someone should have a serious debate on Paul the singer, cause he had one of the best voices in rock and roll at his peak, and he had a long run as a very good singer. I saw him live in 2004, and he sounded fantastic.

Glad the album reviews are back. Great to see these kind of video's again! I was thinking going in that two of my favourite tracks, Ballroom Dancing and Pound is Sinking would get short shrift. Glad to see I was wrong. Also take it away is so catchy as soon as you said the title that song got stuck in my head!!

A fact revision: Paul does not play the Hofner on Take It Away, it was only for show in the music video. He’s playing either the Rickenbacker 4001, or the Yamaha BX1200, most likely the Yamaha since he was using that bass a lot since Back To The Egg.

You mention that Linda's backing vocals were hit and miss before the one on Tug of War and that they were terrific there.
That's because George Martin's exemplary production technique solved the off kilter warbling that she had.
Look at all the terrible singers out there now that sound passable at best due to studio magic.
It was done back then too.
Always has actually when the record label needs to sell a mediocre talent

OK maybe a bit harsh but compared to the rockier Back To The EGG it seems very MOR !
