I think Askren said it best on JRE. His style isn't as entertaining to the average fan, wanting to watch two guys duke it out. But MMA is a science of techniques, and those who understand that concept appreciate what Ben does. Thanks for posting these videos man!!! ✊💯
traditional mat wrestler usually give up their backs and don't always have a great answer to closed and butterfly guard.. So what happens is they try to learn bjj and convert to that meta. Like askeren did early. In order to be effective vs bjj wrestlers have to "unlearn" a lot of what they have learned. I love seeing people pull it off though.
I think matt wrestling is underutilized in MMA because there are too many things to cover and these skills take time and the right coaches. Askren is arguably the best wrestler to come to MMA and he has such an understanding of wrestling he made the conversion. He's showing us what you can do with matt wrestling and he will force his competition catch up or get crushed. It's the same reason MMA striking has progressed. Strikers could never sprawl or avoid getting clinched, until they figured it out, and now you have a some more representation of karate (wonderboy, mvp) and hapkido (whittaker). MMA is responsible for exposing everybody to each other and letting the pressure testing commence. This will make everybody better.
@Shawn Mendenall i think what he is saying that he is the best wrestler in mma using wrestling techniques. E.i crossbody rides, insides and cross wrist controls ,and crucifixes
I think the weight classes, just like in the ufc, that Askren competed in for wrestling are for more technically advanced and difficult compared to heavy weight divisions.
You're doing more to promote MMA than anyone I know. Not to mention advancing the sport itself, you're educating viewers about fighters and allowing us to enjoy fights on a much much higher level.
Be interesting to see you do a breakdown of Rockholds top game-he uses a number of tricky mat returns, leg rides and pins, along with inverted triangles and guillotines.
I'll give a different take on why it's under utilized: It's because the value of a pin / price of being in guard is different in folk Vs MMA Vs BJJ . It's likely to change a bit now in MMA as we're entering another pivot of standing up Vs mat returns as gnp from different guard positions and turtle keeps improving.
I know it's an old comment thread, but if you want to see a more reliable way of finishing "the assassin" from this position, look up Neil Melanson's "Boa head and arm choke". Very powerful
A fascinating analysis! The Assassin technique is a combination of an arm-in triangle guillotine from a leg ride, ala Ricardo Lamas Dennis Bermudez fight. Except, this move is attacked from a leg-ride transition and not from a guillotine setup. If this is hit from a guillotine setup, there is a chance that you lose control and you end up on bottom. The leg-ride is the insurance to maintain control in the case that the move doesn't finish. The Assassin is a befitting name indeed. Ben Askren, I am now a fan of yours. Now let's see Askren vs Maia, followed by a comprehensive analysis from BJJSCOUT! :):)
you have at least 3 subs from the opsition 1 inverted arm triangle 2 guillotine 3 arm triangle from mount inverted triangle aka breaststroke choke check out Stephen Kesling's video on the choke.
BJJSCOUT By far one of THE FINEST knowledge impart @ subject matter. Highly appreciated. Pls keep on, keepin at it!!! God Bless you & yours, U.S. & ours.
Using just one hook and combining pins with submission threaths is a thing that the 10 planet guys also use, but they focus on leg/hook/hip control instead of pinning. I have a slow speed to do good backtakes while doing sports bjj, and i use just one hook a lot of times, the claw control of Askren is great. As always, great things bjjscout!
BJJ Scout we need a leg lock series, Sambo, BJJ, it doesn't matter we just need a high level leglock series. PS don't give up to much 'Funky Material' my son plans on using it in college this season.
It's like everything else: only when someone utilizes it that the technique is popularized. Also, UFC has been focused on fast-paced knockout brawling fights because they're exciting to the general non-mma educated crowd.
Kinda crazy that simple wrestling moves and techniques, like a Western hook, cross face, wrist control, hip control, are so underutilized in MMA grappling, like Askren and this series has.shown, it's the next evolution in MMA
I'm surprised its taken me this long to find your videos. Completely amazed at how well you break things down. Subbed with the bells on :) Do you speak in your videos at all?
I wish wrestling schools existed loke karate, Taekwondo, bjj etc. I do judo now, which is basically greco roman with submissions. But it'd be cool to try folk. Too bad once you leave high school its pretty much over
Bill Gates I disagree. The leg lock system is kind of a partial meta. And the break down of Tonon, however great it was, does not cover the whole system at all.
Bill Gates yeah, I still disagree.. I don't think it has the main things... not even close. And saying that leg lock systems don't matter is so ignorant. It's like saying the positional system in bjj doesn't matter, it's just set ups for arm bars and chokes..I have Halls DVD and I do like it thanks. However I don't think scout has to have trained with them to be able to break down the techniques and strategies used.. there are loads of footage from his students...
Most good wreslters are more well served in ncaa competition which narrows the professional circuit to wrestlers who are 25+ and the olympics isn’t a huge stepbfrom ncaa d1 nationals. Why would they throw that away to train mma start from 0 get crazy concussions AFTER they have a college degree? Theres no incentive for the best wrestlers to go mma. Jordan burroughs didn’t it’s really rare to see an olympic level wrestler and it seems like the ufc doesn’t look for them.
Great stuff as always! Mat wrestling is a no gi specialty and translates well into positional combat like MMA where you can finish with something other than a submission. People are waking up to the limitations of BJJ in this context and adaption is coming across the board as traditional wresting presents more innovative solutions than back takes with no collar to choke. Maia has taken BJJ as far as it can go currently in no gi MMA, I look for techniques like Askren's folk wresting influence to emerge in the next generation of young talent entering pro MMA . Striking will always fill seats, but the influence of wresting on MMA is undeniable. St Pierre returning will certainly show case some wrestling! I love the tournament BJJ breakdowns too, can you bring some depth to the Gi world in the near future?
Chris Reiley I beat this drum constantly because it is what I train and believe in, but the next evolution is Catch as Catch Can wrestling. Folk style is essentially the same without the submissions. Catch Wrestling takes all the solid pins, rides and controls of folk style and has a ton of submissions from those positions. So in the near future, hopefully, we'll be seeing solid d1 wrestlers looking to Catch rather than Bjj (exclusively, because I still think there is a lot to be learned from bjj), for their submissions, because it follows much more closely into their ground game.
I'm really wondering if Askren's style is better for mma than Maia's. I know they are not competing against the same level but still, Askren's style seems like it might be safer and effective for the W, but Maia's might be more submission oriented. What do you guys think?
Have to give it up to bjjScout here. I claimed that Askren's ride's were nothing new in MMA and people's preference for hooks were based on a preference to finish the fight, But this Mat Return series is the real deal. Seems like these returns do offer tangible benefits to the seat belt/hooks game if an opponent is deep into his escape from the turtle. The biggest question that remains is if these techniques work against top American fighters who mostly come from folkstyle backgrounds and have supplemented their wrestling with boxing. What Askren has done is interesting but remains to be impressive until he does it to a top guy
+Cole Eppstein thx, do you mean the Meta or Askren though. I'm highlighting him as a "best practices" case study but in the UFC most of these are used in parts by fighters like khabib, DC, Covington, Woodley etc. I made a study on Weidman/gastellum that shows the meta in play in the UFC already...
Damn. Ben and Khabib do the same thing on the mental aspect; completely demoralizing you. Khabib is too damn strong and Ben is too damn good for you to do a bloody thing. Looking forward to Ben putting the UFC fighters in quicksand.
under utilized because nobody can flow between positions like that and maintain control, you'd have to be at Askrens level to be comfortable enough to deal with all these techniques.
I think a majority of college-level wrestlers have these kinds of skills. They just need to be tweaked for MMA and give consideration to the changes that BJJ introduces to each position. Askren is/was better at it that almost anyone, but the differences in skill between him and your Joe Blow Div. I/Div. II/JNCO wrestler as far as navy rides. wrist rides and crossbody rides are minsecule.
I think Askren said it best on JRE. His style isn't as entertaining to the average fan, wanting to watch two guys duke it out. But MMA is a science of techniques, and those who understand that concept appreciate what Ben does. Thanks for posting these videos man!!! ✊💯

Ive never noticed Whittaker uses hapkido in mma.

7th place in Olympics for him, 4th for Cormier, 2nd for yoel and 1st Cejudo. So I wouldn't say he's the best
You're doing more to promote MMA than anyone I know. Not to mention advancing the sport itself, you're educating viewers about fighters and allowing us to enjoy fights on a much much higher level.

This was ace. Some Gary Tonon analysis would be great

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom on the Funky One.
Beautiful as always!! I can't seem to get tired of these Akeem studies. :p
It's like everything else: only when someone utilizes it that the technique is popularized. Also, UFC has been focused on fast-paced knockout brawling fights because they're exciting to the general non-mma educated crowd.
More Askren studies please¡
Kinda crazy that simple wrestling moves and techniques, like a Western hook, cross face, wrist control, hip control, are so underutilized in MMA grappling, like Askren and this series has.shown, it's the next evolution in MMA
Hey, @BJJScout, I was wondering if you could do a guard passing study of Rafa Mendes
thanks so much for these gems!!! please keep making them!
I'm surprised its taken me this long to find your videos. Completely amazed at how well you break things down. Subbed with the bells on :)
Do you speak in your videos at all?
you did a GREAT job bjjscout, I think face locks too under utilized in mma
amazing work
Damn this ones are fookin gold!
UFC should hire you bjj scout.
ok... my mind exploded
Scout this is amazing!!! I'm pretty sure I just got better at wrestling while I took a shit
I wish wrestling schools existed loke karate, Taekwondo, bjj etc. I do judo now, which is basically greco roman with submissions. But it'd be cool to try folk. Too bad once you leave high school its pretty much over
Awesome
Why not a study on the Danaher leg lock system?
Bill Gates I disagree. The leg lock system is kind of a partial meta. And the break down of Tonon, however great it was, does not cover the whole system at all.

Bill Gates meaning... the leg lock system is a positional system.. not a set of locks.

Should do McGregor vs Mayweather study
I'm going to have nightmares with this dude
Yeeeees!!!!
Killing the game.....

Who are you?
Theyre all obsessed with striking they only train ground because it’s necessary. Theyre being those for the reason the underutilization
under utilized because nobody can flow between positions like that and maintain control, you'd have to be at Askrens level to be comfortable enough to deal with all these techniques.

I wonder why askren is not so very pissed with you uncovering in so much detail what he does hehehehehe
Alvaro Wang, it really helps his cause, showing that he is actually incredible and not fighting in the ufc for silly reasons.
makes sense :)
Just because he showed people what I am doing doesn't mean they can stop it. It would take them years of practice and study to catch up
Ben Askren wow Ben askren himself! I am starstruck! Best of luck tonight!
LOL caught me off guard seeing a response from the man himself!!
Second!!!
Buncha BJJ fans mildly confused about why this matters a lot
Are you sure thats a guillotine and not a seated kata gatame?
Because bjj is gospel
bro that's not a guillotine, that's a twister....................................
*sigh* more Ben Askren...
