    The Starship system is a fully reusable, two‑stage‑to‑orbit super heavy‑lift launch vehicle under development by SpaceX. The system is composed of a booster stage named Super Heavy and a second stage, also called "Starship"

    IFT 4 should be a success

    Shrapnel requires fragmentation. Sheet metal tends more to shredding.

    Ift5 landing by mechazilla, us feasible if ift4 virtual landing is successful. It shows the accuracy of SpaceX engineering and design and planning.

    They need to "JB" weld those tiles on with continuing to use the pins. lol, just a thought. And the 3rd week of May is my prediction for IFT4.
    Thanks for another great episode.

    IFT-5 catch maybe theoretically possible if nothing goes wrong with IFT-4, but it won't happen. Even if soft landing in Gulf, precision needed for virtual tower landing success is highly improbable at this point. Eventually yes but not yet...too early

    I would flatten some ground, put a slab in concrete on It and a tower mockup on it. Just a quick build the same size but not the strength, but a solid ring under it to land on. Just to see if you can hit the target. See if you can hover in to the arms.

    Don’t know if the legs will work. Or if the extra weight might cause a problem at launch or less cargo.

    Admittedly 33,000 lbs. is a historically big payload but it's only 16.5% of the present Starship's 100-ton payload capacity.

      True. I wonder whether they might be aiming to make the cargo version extremely re-usable so that it has enough fuel to land that 33,000 lbs on the Lunar surface and the “missing” payload mass is enough extra fuel for it to take off again - after offloading its cargo of course - and get all the way back to Earth re-entry to load up with fuel and another batch of cargo for its next mission.
      That would make the cargo version quite a bit different to HLS in that it would need flaps, heat shield and header tanks for the Earth re-entry and some of the payload bay in a regular 100-ton Ship would presumably be re-allocated to extra tankage for the additional fuel but if it’s anticipating the days of a pretty much permanently crewed Moon base with regular resupply missions the ability to fully re-use it and do all the fuel top-ups in LEO I would have thought that would make it a very efficient and cost effective system.

    Will BO make a real cargo ship or another cardboard mock-up like last time ?

    I would have thought that IFT-4 is also going to make another attempt to demonstrate on-orbit Raptor relight. Aren’t SpaceX effectively stuck with ballistic sub-orbital test flight trajectories until they can demonstrate on-orbit engine relight because without that if they were to go into a full orbit and the re-entry burn fails they can’t guarantee where the Ship will re-enter because it will be at the mercy of how its orbit decays which isn’t predictable until reasonably soon before actual re-entry?

    • @snakevenom4954
      @snakevenom4954 10 дней назад

      The ship has RCS thrusters that could provide enough force for a controlled re-entry.
      The reason they aren't going to Orbit at the current moment is because a suborbital flight would be easier to get the license for and realistically, you don't get any more information from an orbital flight than a slightly under orbital flight

    • @julianfp1952
      @julianfp1952 10 дней назад

      @@snakevenom4954 Except - while we don’t actually have confirmation from SpaceX as far as I know - the widespread theory is that the Ship’s RCS thrusters didn’t behave as expected either hence the Ship’s rolling and other attitude control issues on re-entry. Point taken though - thanks for the info/correction. Presumably though, there isn’t much reason not to re-attempt the on-orbit engine re-light for IFT-4 to get that milestone ticked off ASAP?

    • @snakevenom4954
      @snakevenom4954 10 дней назад

      @@julianfp1952 I agree. An engine re-light should be something they test next flight. I would imagine the bay door will open again since last time it looked to have broken and didn't close properly. But more than not, the booster landing on a virtual tower and Starship surviving re-entry are their main goals for next launch
