Friends build each other up and support them. However there are times where being a friend means being truthful even if it's something they don't want to hear.
They all handled it wrong. Barney told her the truth but did it way too harshly. I love the quote "honesty without tact is cruelty." But they lied. They didn't like it but didn't want her to feel bad. I think maybe dont say anything unless she asks you how you felt about it. And then when it's done just say "hey I'm really proud of you for accomplishing this. It must have been cool to be apart of a theatrical show." Then you're not lying and you acknowledge them and you dont have to tell them how crappy it is unless they ask.
@@alexisd6106 The truth isn't about being nice or harsh it is just the truth which people will have to accept no matter how much it hurt peoples feelings. The problem is not the truth being harsh, but that people are not able to handle it when it's harsh even though they keep saying that they want the truth.
@@lionkingflo6355 Yeah I see what you mean but as Alexis pointed out if they didn't ask for it there's no need to point it out. In this situation Barney could've used constructive criticism instead of just saying it sucked

As someone who watch a theater play where the actors are not well preapred it's cringe believe me or not. It's funny on our pov but if you are the audience you will find it cringey
It would be hilarious for the first hour, sure! Then by the second hour, I'd maybe get a little bored. Two and a half hours in, the pain would be steadily mounting. By the time it became a play within a play, I'd be praying for death's sweet embrace
I liked how the episode ultimately ended with both of them being right. Lily did stay to support Barney’s play but eventually she broke and was honest about it being bad. But then she still stayed to let him finish the second act because it was important to him.
I have learn the hard way that being honest about everything actually sucks ... Unless this directly affects you and there is no another way, you should let your friends realize by themselves ... Bceause your opinion may be not correct and even this is true, people are terrible when having to face reaility unwillingly... Most of the time they will interept your honest advice as negative things like you don't understand what they are doing or you are cruel, not supportive as a real friend .... So helping your friend as much as you can, being positive and keeping your mouth shut is always the best way to go :))
@@llarmstrong783 lily should have been consumerism considering she’d racked up thousands of dollars of credit card debt just a few months prior due to her buying lavish clothes

If I am having a bad day, I just watch this episode again. This series has just became a part of my life now, missing it badly!! Wish it had continued for more years.
I just wanted to say that after this scene I joined a theater like that. The show was in a basement, we were wearing all black, and it was a very strange performance. My friends were very confused, buy I was living my moment of HIMYM and that made me so happy!
Reminds me of that one time in college i took a dance class and the entire class decided to do art house metaphorical dances and have them go on for far too long. While I just did a nice jazz number
The joke is that Barney's deliberately dreadful play was only on the level of how bad Lily's was. But Marshall forces him to stay and endure it and then they all lie rather than fess up that it sucked (not that you do it right to your friend's face but you get my point, they all turn a blind eye to how bad Lily's is but are open to how bad Barney's is when they're barely any different). Barney heaving into a bag is honestly hysterical and exactly how you'd feel watching this dreck.
I am brutally honest when people ask for my opinion. My sister once got upset when I told her that her cooking was subpar and needed more seasoning after she asked me what I thought about it. I wasn't mean about it, just honest.
4 actors 1 technician and 8 audience members and 4 of them were Lily’s invitees…. Didnt the other 3 have anyone they wanted to torture? Or give brain lesions to? Cuz that’s how at least Barney seemed …. Brain damaged …. Especially when director announced QnA
Barney running out is honestly the best part.
Makes me giggle every time.
It kills me every time. 🤣

I agree with both Barney and Lily, friends need to comfort each other but they also need to be honest

Right now, this scene and the one from Monk when he’s trying to laugh have been my go to’s for an immediate pick me up.
The guy playing America was actually a pretty good actor
He's also the security guard from The Amanda Show, Barney lol
Bob Rooney from Married with Children :-)

Barney's revenge in a later scene is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.😂
I was in a student play at Uni and all my friends left halfway through.
Honestly couldn't blame them 🤣
‘Wow Lilly! That sucked’ incredible
@1:10 oh my god Ted's part of the play always gets me
Reminds me a little bit of FRIENDS' "Why don't you like me" - one woman show! 😆
"I don't know. You seem lovely" 😂
The best moment in the series when Lily was put in her place.
Barney rushing out of the place when the director talks about the q&a always makes me laugh 😂
I love how Marshall was ready with flowers for her.
Envy wanted to be rage.
Beautifully written.
I had a friend who used to do awful pantomimes, so I can relate to the gang here

The last scene would be me after every play.

Barney's one man show is my favourite scene of HIMYM.
Ted's emotions 😂😂😂

It’s not the worst concept but the revelation of who each of the characters are should have been left till the end
