This song is not about drugs. Or, more accurately, this song is not ONLY about drugs.
Let’s dive in.
First, we have to establish the context surrounding the song. I am going to refer to Papa throughout - and I am not specifically referring to any one Papa in particular. You can just assume that all the different iterations of the character are one person to simplify this (and frankly it doesn't matter for the sake of my argument). We all know what Papa’s main goal is: to take over the world and convert us all to Satanism. This is not controversial - we all pretty much agree that this is fact, right? Right.
So why would he bother to write a song that is simply about weed? I’m not saying there aren’t references to weed in the song - there are! - but the song is not ABOUT weed. The song is about us. About me, you, the rest of the people on earth who he wants to seduce into following him. It is a love song to the fans. Let’s break it down.
[We were speeding together / Down the dark avenues]
I’ve seen some people arguing that speed is a drug, therefore this is proof that the song is about drugs. I disagree, and I actually don't think this is one of the references to drugs in the song. Just because speed CAN mean meth, doesn't mean it ALWAYS means meth. When a cop pulls you over for speeding he’s not pulling you over because he thinks you're high. Sometimes speeding is just speeding. I think he is simply saying that we (Papa and the listener) are on a path together. Let’s move on.
[But besides all the stardom / All we got was blues / But through all the sorrow / We were riding high]
This is most certainly a drug reference (to being high) but there is deeper meaning here too. He is saying that even though life has been hard and full of sorrow, there have also been good times. So put this verse together, and he is talking about how we (again, that is Papa and you, the listener) have been through a lot together and there have been ups and downs, but…
[And the truth of the matter is / I never let you go, let you go]
The important thing is that he has never let you go. He has never let you down. Papa has been here for you. Even when it has been hard for him, and hard for us, he has been there for us. This is Papa showing you he is committed, and later the verse tense changes to show that he will be there in the future for you. He wants you to know that you can depend on his presence.
[We were scanning the cities / Walking to greater dues / But besides all the glamor / All we got was bruised / But through all the sorrow / We were riding high / And the truth of the matter is / I had to let you go, let you go]
[We were searching for reasons / To play by the rules / But we quickly found / It was just for fools / And after all the sorrow / We'll be riding high / And the truth of the matter is / I'll never let you go, let you go]
I won’t go into too much here, because the meaning is pretty repetitive as he drives home the message. I only want to point out that he is talking a bit here about how the world has expectations of us and hurts us. We are supposed to play by the rules, and we try to, but it doesn’t get us anywhere, and often we only end up hurt when we can’t fit in. This is a very similar theme to Cirice, where he tells us [I know your soul is not tainted / Even though you've been told so]. Basically society is hostile to us, telling us that we are wrong or that we’re bad people, but Papa knows we aren’t. He sees the real person underneath the scars.
Now, let’s get to the meat and potatoes.
[You go down just like Holy Mary / Mary on a, Mary on a cross / Not just another Bloody Mary / Mary on a, Mary on a cross]
This is a sex reference, of course - we all know what he means by going down. But his use of the word “Holy” here is deliberate. He is saying that when you go down (on your knees to worship him) it is a holy act. It is good and right. He wants you to know that kneeling in front of him and giving yourself to him is good, not sinful. He uses the sexual language to juxtapose the idea - a holy act vs a sinful one. So yeah, he wants you to blow him, but like, also with your soul, and Satan approves. The line “not just another bloody Mary” reinforces this - you are not common and bloodied, you are pure and holy. You’ve been crucified by the world, but you are good inside. Just like he said to Cirice.
[If you choose to run away with me / I will tickle you internally / And I see nothing wrong with that]
So first of all, he’s giving you a choice. You don’t have to follow him, but if you do you’ll be rewarded. This is very obviously another sex reference - he is going to finger you lmao. But the point is that he is going to make you happy, and satisfy you, and that it’s okay. Other people might think there is something wrong with this, but not Papa. He knows that it’s okay for you to feel pleasure (sexually and otherwise) and he wants to give that to you (consensually, too. We love a consensual king, right?). Sexuality has been demonized by religions, especially Abrahamic religions, but Papa says it’s good. He’s going to lay you out in front of him, arms spread wide like a cross, and he’s going to finger you, and you’ll love it. Papa, you horny bitch, I’m ready.
[Your beauty never ever scared me]
This final bit is pretty clear - Papa thinks your soul is beautiful, and he has never been afraid of what you’re capable of doing. The world may call you evil and sinful, but Papa knows that your power and your emotions and your sexuality all make you beautiful.
So, yeah. Overall, yes, lots of references to sex and drugs, but the ultimate message is that Papa is with you, and Papa loves you, and if you follow him he will reward you (with fingerbanging). Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
Just a correction, I doubt that the use of the word 'holy' has anything to do with worship since Mary is only venerated, not worshiped.
