- West Wood is a large 1200 acre piece of Woodland located in the South West of the UK near the ancient market town of Marlborough, also close by is Avebury village and it's impressive stone circle.
There is no doubt this area was a very important place back in the Stone age!

It reminds me of the walks my friend Patrick and I would take from time to time.
Sadly, he died on the 7th of February, peacefully in his easy chair.

Fascinating trip to the woods Sandy. The whole area around Wiltshire is full of such history. I hadn’t heard of the West Woods though.

I love these woods, they are such a special place, visit here several times a month for walks or cycling, thought I knew the woods inside out but never seen this polisher stone.

Excellent bit of time travelling! Thanks for taking us with you. There is some land near me, Beverley Westwood, that was granted common status in 1300 and so it was frozen in time at that point. There are Roman enclosures and bronze age barrows but that one is massive! Keep up the good work.
Been looking to explore West Wood for a while - now you given me some landmarks to punctuate my exploring... Some of my favourite places - Fyfield Down, and Devil's Den are so close by. Thanks.
That was fun Sandy. Inspecting the tool makers workshops of a long time ago. Some of their sharps needed a heat cycle to get them to the optimal hardness too.

Hi Dickie, the What 3 words app is very useful, provided you've got signal you can find most things, deffo need some for of navigation to find the artifacts in west wood

Really interesting video, Sandy, thank you. I grew up in a neighbouring village (Manton) and spent a huge amount of time in these woods on our bikes as kids. I didn't know any of the this so it's really interesting.
It's amazing the history we have around us, still lots more to explore
I was admiring Andrew’s drone skills the other day. I’m a sub to his channel to 😉. Good to see you both out there. Very interesting stuff Sandy. I love our real ancient history. Imagine most of the country was probably thick forest like your in. Trees were likely much, much bigger back then. Not a bad place for a sneaky camp out. Cheers, Andy
Hi Andy, we can but dream as to how big the forests and tree's once were, most of them have been cut down or fallen through great age and all quite young tree's now. This woodland is managed but there has been tree's here probably since the end of the last ice age

Thanks James, there was another standing stone I would have liked to have seen but didn't have time. I would say most of the archaeology (what is known) could be seen in 3 hours walking and its a nice place to walk too.

Very informative Sandy, Looks like the woods aren't that old but worth a visit with the camera when the bluebells are out!
Oh they are quite old in that there has been a woodland here for almost an eternity, though over time a lot of tree's have been felled and replanted, it's quite managed now though
Very interesting video Sandy. What better way to spend a day than out in nature enjoying your time shared with your brother Andy. Completely surrounded by ancient historical gems that have continued to stand up against the test of time. And yes, Andy as a drone pilot is definitely an expert at threading his way through the forests and patiently scoping out the nooks and crannies that probably would be passed and ignored otherwise. Two very fine gentlemen out in those woods today for sure. Thanks for allowing us to join you once again, it was amazing. See you on the next one.
Thanks Terry, we both had a great few hours in the woods, I am a much more careful drone flier than Andy, he can be a bit of a risk taker at times, good job he doesn't ride a motorbike:)

A beautiful ancient English woodland Sandy, an interesting video, a lovely walk, cheers to yourself and your brother for taking us along.
That was fabulous. Those woods are amazing. Incredible the difference at Stonehenge between the big Sarsen stones from west woods and the smaller blue stones from Wales. If you ever get the chance to visit the blue stone quarry in the Preseli mountains, it’s wonderful. No signs, no tea shop. Just a grid reference and your imagination.
I'd love to visit the blue stones Steve, maybe on the cards for a trip there later this year

That is the location of the quarry. In fact it shows a fallen bluestone ready for transport. The location is Craig Rhosyfelin. GR 117362. 500m west of CROSSWELL just off the B4329. No parking. But there’s a few places you can sneak a car or a bike in. It’s magical. The quarry looks like it was abandoned yesterday. You can clearly see the pillars of rock that formed the bluestones. Some are left on the ground like they were working on them when it was suddenly abandoned.

Glad that you've found something new about the woods Dave, to find the sites you'll need access to a gps or phone with what 3 words on it
Someone needs to do a LIDAR survey of these woods - the results will surprise.
Great video Sandy. It's great to explore local history. You found most of the places you were looking for. In my area there are 2 ringed forts and a number of standing stones.

Hi John, it is indeed a grave often with a prime burial of a high status person, they would bury the individual in a small stone lined tomb called a cist and pile up a mound of earth and rock over the top. As time goes by other burials were often added into the sides of the mound these being known as satellite burials . They stopped using barrows during the Saxon age

Not far from me is a place called Grimes Graves a flint mine in Norfolk very interesting place

Nice vid Mr Wiltshire Man…..it’s sooo easy to not see what history is around you, even when you are stood right on top of in woodland!
Would be great if you do a follow up to let us know if the barrow was dug in the recent past by archaeologists or just attempted robbery centuries ago?
Almost certainly dug by the antiquarians during the 17 Century, It has all the haul marks of a central dig from the top down looking for the prime burial, there is a very good chance of satellite burials as the mound is large and they are probably intact

Since the link to Stonehenge has been established the site really needs to be listed. I wonder what it's status is.
If enough of interest can be found, there should be archaeological excavations.
Carmen was fine in the back of the car, the little dog wasn't - whale eye, closed mouth, pursed lips
Be aware that several dog have caught Alabama Rot whilst in West Wood - watch out for lesions & bald patches caused by the capillaries clotting.
There's also been cases of Alabama rot in my local woods close to Stratton and at Stanton park. West woods definitely worth visiting, I shall go back there probably on bicycle soon

Dickie's vlog was fascinating and threw me off balance as I thought the Stonehenge stone was the sarsen blue stuff from the Preseli mountains. I'm guessing they were from one ring, and there's another, earlier phase where the stone comes more locally from the West Wood?
Apparently they sourced some of the stones from West wood and some from Wales Oscar

When you think how archeologists dig down for Roman remains yet that Stone Age polishing stone still sits on the surface, makes you wonder how that happens.
Thats a very good question, I think some area's especially where there's a lot of human activity can cause a build up over the years perhaps?

Good morning to you. I live in Ludgershall and I know where Savernake forest is, but not West Woods? In fact, I can't think of any Woods to the west of Marlborough. Perhaps you can enlighten me. Thanks for the video.
You will find West woods really easy, it's a massive block of woodland almost half the size of Savernake. Go to google maps, find Savernake then look due West about 5km and that is West wood
