1) For those that don't know, Boss pedals are buffered so that there is no tone sucking, which is nice. 2) The main reason for the "loop" built into this pedal is that the input section of the pedal circuit senses the original input, then compares it to what is going out of the output jack on the pedal. The NS2 attenuates the noise accordingly. This helps avoid over attenuation (or tone sucking).
Thanks for the info. If one does want to check on the tone to be safe, is it simply a matter of clicking the pedal off or would it have to be completely unwired and removed from the loop to check for tonal changes?
Hah finally someone who uses it like this! Awesome video! Maybe you should mention that time based effects like loopers, as well as delays and reverbs have to be placed after the whole noise reduction thing (between the NS-2s output and the effects return/poweramp) to avoid cutting off your nice delay and reverb trails :-)
+Chris S. Yes that is a good suggestion.. my bad i didnt mention it and focused only on the amp and drive pedal noise. :) time based stuff after noise reduction.
This is THE best video on how to use this pedal effectively, you explained it so well, even I can understand how to use it. Thank You so much, now off to go get me a boss ns-2.
Great video - saved me buying two gates! That seems to be a good idea if your amp is feeding back noise in the preamp before the fx loop, but mine probably isn't gonna be doing that... fingers crossed....
Perfect explanation, and perfect Spanish pronuntiation!!. Dos perfects in one message ;) Thank you for the explanation, it is useful for a newbie in using noise reductors like me :) Greetings from Spain.
Thank goodness someone has correctly demonstrated/described situation two at 1:50 👍. Just looked at the Boss Manual which to be fair does show this type of situation, but it depicts a Tuner and Compressor in the loop. The manual should show an OD/DIST pedal in the loop; as far as I know, tuners are not known for creating noise 🤔.
Hello Subu Nomo, just got one of these very cheap on ebay (had no noise problem actually, but it was like 30€ shipping included). Thanks for teaching me how to use it! Greetings from germany
Muhammad Haryandi Noise doesn't affect the Note you are playing in terms of tuning. Anyways if you place the tuner after the noisegate it might be annoying since the gate will cut your notes sustain and make it much more complicated to tune your guitar/bass.
Yes, I feel that a noise suppressor with an effects loop is a big deal. In addition battery is also vital in some cases. There are not many that have both features. The battery deal I love as it does not take up one of my power supplies. Good ob.
+CoffeeDrinker71 thank you so much. Cheers from india and please dont hesitate to suggest video ideas or if there is something you need to learn. Maybe i can help :)
I love you man ,,, great video ... I'm looking to do some quieting down on the amp & strat ,,, you know the deal ... you give me all three solid methods ,,, you got the best video on this ... thanks 👍👍👍👍. D
Thank You for a "Great" Video my friend. Your time and efforts are appreciated very much. I have a PRS Sonzera 50W Combo (which I love) but the "Hum" was a bit loud with 8 pedals (now 9 with the NS-2). The way you have it connected works great with your setup. It's my 1st Noise Suppressor so I wasn't quite sure of the correct way to do it. Thank You again...
Awesome video! Thank you so much for this quick, layman explanation. Great job! A footnote for the "tone sucking" aspect of the noise gate: if you are using it purely for your gain channel, you can set you tone to compensate, since the pedsl will be, more or less, a "set and forget" pedal. I only ever worry about tone suckage from, say, a delay. You most likely won't use your delay all the time, so if there is a sizable tone shift between wet and dry, it can be quite daunting. My Marshall TSL 100 has two effects loops, so I would use the Noise gate/suppressor in the 2nd (crunch/lead) loop, and a reverb in the 1st (clean) unsuppressed. I'd dial in the tones to compensate, and done! Thanks again
I have no fx loop on my amp, but want to use other pedals after the noise gate. What's next? Do I just connect the noise gate to the next pedal input then the last pedal output to the amp? Or is there a better way of doing this? Thanks for the video and any response!
I haven’t been able to use my pedals to it’s potential due to the feedback it gives when all plugged in, I’m a beginner at this so I thought I spent 100$ on a broken noise suppressor but thanks to this video I got it and it works wonders! Thank you so very much!!
Ive used Rocktron, Isp & Boss .... This time when I bought a noise gate or Reducer as some will say ......... I spent 35.00 and bout a Celine China made pedal off amazon. Works great ...... serious. It comes down to spend 35 or 100 for pretty much same results.
@@SubuNomo I can't remember where I heard about it, pretty sure it was a RUclips video, but it does seem to compress and tighten up the signal and the sound. I hear the difference with no other effects on. Just sounds better.
@@SubuNomo Give it a shot and hit me back if you can hear a difference. Could just be my rig, but I've always heard a big improvement in sound quality with it on, and not just in noise reduction.
Hi , I understand the 4CM and the general concept of an fx loop; but I don't understand the difference between using the ns2 input or loop. Because at first he plugged the guitar to the input and it worked, so the pedal took care of the noise of what was before it(guitar pickups iI guess). If that's the case, why the need of a send return? Why not just put every noisy pedal before, since it works with everything coming in anyway, like it did in first example. Thanks
For no fx loop + a distortion pedal, how is using the NS2's loop any different from putting the NS2 after the distortion? Is the noise reduction any different?
The loop on the NS-2 creates a circuit within itself where the objects placed inside it are expanded. The NS-2 reads the guitar signal at the input and gates at the output using the 4 wire method. It is also a stomp box pedal with limitations, I’ve experienced problems isolating my heads preamp in combination with an over drive and compressor (keely pro into moog mf drive into amp isolating with ns-2). The 4 wire meathod is great for isolating something like a gain stage before an amp if you’re running something else in between that and the amp. It’s very hard to find a proper explanation of how the NS-2 loop actually works, hope this helped some people who wanted to know a little more in depth of the operation of it. As a side note there is a circuit within the NS-2 which filters noise from sound which can only be accessed in the loop so that is the real benefit of using it on top of being able to use a single gate for an isolated circuit instead of one at the front and one at the rear like some guys tend to do.................... for some reason.
Hi. very good video. Many musicians use a TS800 to boost the distortion of our amp (in my case Metal) and that produces a lot of noise. Maybe you should add something like that, in my case I do something similar to the third example that you give, the only difference is that I connect the TS808 to the input of the NS2 and it works quite well. saludos desde Chile
Hi. In the third method, how should the gate be powered? from the power supply in the effects loop or from the power supply before the preamplifier. The idea is to avoid the ground loop effect.
The only tone suckage is when you have noise in your rig! The BOSS NS-2 is a great pedal. I am thinking for upgrading to the TC ELECTRONICS SENTRY soon. I had my first NS-2 for a long time, I have a newer one that I got used.
This still the best explanation on RUclips of how to use the NS-2. Anytime somebody asks me how to set theirs up, I just send them here.
Watched this video about 10 times because I always forget how to do this. Thanks for making it.
Me too.... I run reverb and delay and a few other effects thru my effects loop on my 5150iii I wonder how this would affect those?🤔🤔🤔
B Floyd run your gate before your modulation effects (reverb, chorus, flanger, etc.)
Very helpful and straight forward.

I found adjusting the 2 knobs correctly made my sound great without playing with more cords
I have those same Planet Waves cables, bought about 14 years ago and never had an issue. Solid choice
Thank you. I needed method 2 and went through 3 or 4 other videos before finding this. Much appreciated!
Thank you my guy for doing every possible step and where you can plug it in I had questions you answered them through an observable experience. Ty
Awesome video! Most people on YT aren't showing method/situation 2 of your video and I think that's very useful for amps with no fx loop.
I've been looking everywhere for this video. The most informative with the least BS

But what if your noisy pedal IS a delay?
ill try this!
if its a delay, put the noise reduction after it. if the delay is the first of your modulation efects, you will be fine.
Nice.. how about if your amp doesn't have effect loop where do I place my delay, reverbs etc. thanks
