Well done. You just did what your video already said you would, showed the technique, didn’t waste time showing us your face or metal riffs, and didn’t yammer on like other videos. Thank you
Okay, following this guide will set up the pedal properly... but I think it would have helped people to understand how the signal is working if you followed the path of the signal for the tutorial. The signal is Guitar > NS2(Input) || NS2 (Send) > Amp Main Input || Amp (Send - aka Effects loop start) > NS2 (Return) || NS2 (Output) > Amp (Return - aka Effects loop end). The way you explained it in the video is the same result, but you jump back and forth between the start and ending points for each connection, so it gets confusing as to what is actually happening. The guitar is going through the NS2 to reduce guitar noise, then the signal is going through the amp Pre-amp, out of the amp effects loop, into the NS2 effects loop, back into the amp via the return of the amp effects loop. Basically, it's just way to get one NS2 to work on both the guitar signal and the amp signal. It's the same as putting one NS2 after the guitar, and a second NS2 in the amp's effects loop. Simple! This makes it clear where to put pedals - if you don't want them clipped by the NS2, you put them between NS-2(Return) and Amp(Return), and if you do want them affected by the NS2, you can put them either between Guitar and NS input (if you want them not affected by the amp pre amp and tracked by the NS twice), or between Amp(Send) and NS2(Return) (if you want them affected by the amp pre amp and the NS2 once).
Hey, is it possible for you to check my comment about setting up the pedals? I've just commented so if you check the comments in 'New' order, it should be there at the top.

Sorry, not sure if this comment will get through but say I have a set of distortion/overdrive pedals and a set of delays/reverb pedals. Note that DR = Delay/Reverb and OD = Overdrive & Distortion In order I'd have set them: Guitar --> NS-2 --> OD --> NS-2 --> DR --> Amp. And if connecting lines, I'm assuming that I'd go... Guitar (Out) --> NS-2 (In) & NS-2 (Send) --> OD (In) & OD (Out) --> NS-2 (Re) & NS-2 (Out) --> DR (In) & DR (Out) --> Amp (In) Would this make it so that the noise gate would affect only the pedals in between 'Send' & 'Return'? In the case above, would it successfully only apply the noise reduction on the OD pedals, and leave the DR pedals alone?
Yep that's right. Anything after the NS-2 is unaffected by it, so in the setup you described the DR pedals are unaffected. If your amp has an effects loop you could still set it up like in the video, just put your DR pedals as the last thing before the Return on the amp's effects loop. This would make the ns2 a lot more effective, like in the video.
what is the difference between Guitar> distortion pedal> NS2 input/output>amp vs. Guitar>NS2 Input/Send>distortion>return/output>amp? Don't the pedals in the loop still get effected by the gate?
it also puts a gate on the signal that comes out of your amps here distorted preamp wich also produces a significant amount of noise. now by not only silencing the direct signal but also the pream section you eliminate much more noise you otherwise couldnt :-)
it's not a gate. so if you put it after your distortion it will be trying to clean up your distorted signal which is pointless. It has to be before the distortion.

I just got this pedal and like most I was very nervous about it cutting tone the way fender noiseless pickups do. Don't listen to that non sense. This pedal has custom controls and yes it can cut your tone depending on how you set it, but set the right way and all it does is cut the noise and none of the tone. Glad I picked this pedal up.
i tried this in my Laney GH100L using the behringer noise suppressor and it didn't even work normally (at all). I connected everything exactly as shown in step two, but perhaps it's just the behringer pedal not working the same way, or an issue with the return/ send inputs.
I'm not familiar with that pedal. I've used this pedal with different amps and it always works. It possibly could also be an issue with the effects loop on the amp.
First of all great video, thank you! How you connect the 4 cable method with a preamp from Engl where the Output is the FX loop send? The example here is the Engl E530. Thanks
I've always wondered how to use this in the effects loop if it's offstage (Iso-cab) and you are going DI from your board on stage. My amp is at least 80-100 Ft from where my board is.
Will that stop the squealing that much guitar makes, i put new pickups in and make it started squealing like crazy, I woulda thought seymour duncan and dimarzio pickups wouldn't have done that but they do.
@@RobNY5150 I will check my solder joints. Another question, ok I've seen lots of videos talking about using this 4 cable method with a noise suppressor, What if your fx loop has a level knob, where would you set that at and does it make a difference.
Thanks for the video. Can this be used to stop the hissing sound that's generated by my 32 band graphic equaliser? I'm thinking about purchasing the Boss and placing it between my mixer where the mics are and the graphic equaliser before going out to my speakers.
@@RobNY5150 I recently purchased one and am glad I did. It made a huge difference with the hissing sound. It locked that out completely. The only other sound is a low humming electronic sound that you got before you showed how to do method number 2. I have the noise suppressor connected to my mixer mix output to the suppressor input and the output of the suppressor is going to my speakers.
What would be the way to do the second method if I'm running a microphone through the guitar pedal? I normally go from the mic into the guitar pedal and out from the guitar pedal into a Scarlett solo interface with with an xlr cable
Thx for video. I have a problem :I tried first method, I get 0 sound with pedal activated or off. Fx loop method, as soon as I connect from output of peda to return of amp, my amp gets muted. Is it my amp? What am I doing wrong? I'm trying this with a strat and a fender mustang 3 solid state amp.
After the NS-2 output. Usually an NS-2 set-up would look something like this: Guitar -> NS-2 Input NS-2 Send -> Overdrive/Fuzz/Boost -> Amp Input Amp Send -> NS-2 Return NS-2 Output -> Modulation/Delay/Reverb/Tremolo -> Amp Return This way you get noise suppression for your guitar, drive pedals, and the amp's preamp, and no noise suppression for your modulation and delay. Your delay and reverb trails will still ring out and won't get clipped by the NS-2.
@@glytch5 no.. no you're very confused and I just want to clear up the confusion. This video demonstrates how to simply use a BOSS NS2 noise gate pedal which I do own. I don't own any other pedals because my amps have built in effects so no need.

At the moment I’m having issues with excessive feedback from the amp (as in that horrible high pitch squeal), will this pedal address the feedback issue? (I don’t use any pedals, I plug my guitar lead straight into the amp.
It depends on what's CAUSING that noise. If it's the result of high gain, alot of distortion, then yes. But if it's the result of a bad connection etc then possibly not.
There's still a little bit of noise, so I guess this is meant for the loud background. Can it be used for filtering background noise captured from a microphone (which is quieter)?
I'll probably do another video at some point with a real guitar amp mic. I think in this video unfortunately the smartphone mic was picking up background noise.
I have a silly question sorry I'm new to this, the noise from my amp stopped when I'm not playing meaning the noise gate works, but as I start playing the noise comes back along with my distortion, does it have to be this way? or can I kill the noise while playing somehow, idk, thanks.
Hello Guys!!! I already got an effect loop on my tube amp so I've understood that i have to choose the 4 cables method! My need is: Use the Boss ns2 on the high gain channel of my amplifier with a Maxon od808 as a boost. How can I do that? Please help me my friend!!!
Well, if you use the OD808 for overdriving your amp, you'll have guitar - OD808 - Input Boss-NS2 (instead of going from guitar directly into the NS-2); if you just want to increase the volume, you'll put the OD808 into the effect-loop; if I'm correct, it'll be his explanation from 1:50: from NS-2 Return -input OD808 - effect send amp....(I hope I'm correct....)
I have all my pedals in front of my amp and this is how it goes Guitar > IN, SEND > Input of gain stage(for me it's a Comp > POG > ODx3), Output of gain stage > RETURN, OUT > First pedal after gain stage(For me it's volume followed by mod, delay, reverb).

This pedal has custom controls and yes it can cut your tone depending on how you set it, but set the right way and all it does is cut the noise and none of the tone. Glad I picked this pedal up.
Cool yeah I've owned almost every noise reducer pedal on the market and the BOSS is the best overall IMO
i tried this in my Laney GH100L using the behringer noise suppressor and it didn't even work normally (at all).
My amp is at least 80-100 Ft from where my board is.
wait mp3/line in is return??
Will it affect negatively the sound of the notes?
In my experience not significantly but every amp is different.
Thanks now i can play my Les Paul jr with out getting a headache! and Strat of course
Cool man rock on
Will that stop the squealing that much guitar makes, i put new pickups in and make it started squealing like crazy, I woulda thought seymour duncan and dimarzio pickups wouldn't have done that but they do.
My first thought is that you may have a bad solder joint or ground wire.
@@RobNY5150 I will check my solder joints. Another question, ok I've seen lots of videos talking about using this 4 cable method with a noise suppressor, What if your fx loop has a level knob, where would you set that at and does it make a difference.
What if your amp did have the FX Loop?
I'm buying this pedal 2nd hand tomorrow just to test a theory. But why do you have so much signal noise anyway?
I like lots of gain! Metal! METAL!!
Thanks for the video. Can this be used to stop the hissing sound that's generated by my 32 band graphic equaliser? I'm thinking about purchasing the Boss and placing it between my mixer where the mics are and the graphic equaliser before going out to my speakers.
It might. I would suggest trying it out but make sure you buy it from a retailer where you can return it if it doesn’t meet your expectations.
@@RobNY5150 I recently purchased one and am glad I did. It made a huge difference with the hissing sound. It locked that out completely. The only other sound is a low humming electronic sound that you got before you showed how to do method number 2. Unfortunately, I can do method 2 because I don't know if there is a way to do a return into my mixer which is a Soundcraft EPM6 and I don't know enough about mixers to set up a return like you showed on your amp. I have the noise suppressor connected to my mixer mix output to the suppressor input and the output of the suppressor is going to my speakers.
thanks...this was really helpful.
Using the second method how can I connect the rest of my pedals
Hey check out my follow up video on this hopefully it will help you out.
Great work.
What would be the way to do the second method if I'm running a microphone through the guitar pedal? I normally go from the mic into the guitar pedal and out from the guitar pedal into a Scarlett solo interface with with an xlr cable
Honestly I’m not sure because I’ve never used this setup with a mic. Why are you using the mic with the guitar pedal?
@@RobNY5150 I just like the effects
Thx for video. I have a problem :I tried first method, I get 0 sound with pedal activated or off. Fx loop method, as soon as I connect from output of peda to return of amp, my amp gets muted. Is it my amp? What am I doing wrong? I'm trying this with a strat and a fender mustang 3 solid state amp.
Hmm my guess is that something is connected wrong, possibly the return and send wires need to be reversed?
Where would you put chorus and flange and delay pedals?
After the NS-2 output. Usually an NS-2 set-up would look something like this:
Guitar -> NS-2 Input
NS-2 Send -> Overdrive/Fuzz/Boost -> Amp Input
Amp Send -> NS-2 Return
NS-2 Output -> Modulation/Delay/Reverb/Tremolo -> Amp Return
This way you get noise suppression for your guitar, drive pedals, and the amp's preamp, and no noise suppression for your modulation and delay. Your delay and reverb trails will still ring out and won't get clipped by the NS-2.
Now we ARE talking Josh!!!!!
Thnx, this make sense!!!👍⚡️💪
My amp does not have an effect loop :-(
What if you don’t use the amp’s effect loop?
You can still go in front of the amp. It will cut out most noise and unwanted feedback.
Basically,
Guitar Output > Pedal Input
Pedal Send > Amp Input
Amp Send > Pedal Return
Pedal Output > Amp Return
Can you show how this works with multiple pedals in the FX loops and in front of the amp?
I currently don't own any pedals but if I do eventually have a few I'll def do that video.
@@RobNY5150 you don't own any pedals.... thats like me doing a video of how to drive a car and not owning one. lol
@@glytch5 no.. no you're very confused and I just want to clear up the confusion. This video demonstrates how to simply use a BOSS NS2 noise gate pedal which I do own. I don't own any other pedals because my amps have built in effects so no need.
@@RobNY5150 just messin with ya man. From what I am reading if you are using time based effects in a loop this technique doesn't work. I have always used this pedal as just in and out in the front and it worked pretty good... just messing around seeing if I can get a better result
Do you have any idea how to get it's full potential with the Boss ES-8?
I don't know how to connect the Send and Return to it properly.
I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the ES8
My signal is muted specifically when I use the CS-3 in the loop of my NS-2. Any reason??
At the moment I’m having issues with excessive feedback from the amp (as in that horrible high pitch squeal), will this pedal address the feedback issue?
(I don’t use any pedals, I plug my guitar lead straight into the amp.
Yes it should. You can always try it and return it if it doesn’t do what you want.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
Does the pedal help with unwanted string noise and string muting?
Absolutely depending on the settings
Can this be used to stop the whistle-like sound that comes out when you use a lot of distorsion?
It depends on what's CAUSING that noise. If it's the result of high gain, alot of distortion, then yes. But if it's the result of a bad connection etc then possibly not.
There's still a little bit of noise, so I guess this is meant for the loud background. Can it be used for filtering background noise captured from a microphone (which is quieter)?
I'll probably do another video at some point with a real guitar amp mic. I think in this video unfortunately the smartphone mic was picking up background noise.
@@RobNY5150 Ok. The reason I ask was because I was thinking of using this to filter out ventilation noise picked up by my condenser microphone.
I have a silly question sorry I'm new to this, the noise from my amp stopped when I'm not playing meaning the noise gate works, but as I start playing the noise comes back along with my distortion, does it have to be this way? or can I kill the noise while playing somehow, idk, thanks.
It depends what kind of noise you're getting. When you're playing, the gate is designed to open so you can hear your playing.
But rob, where do I hook up the rest of my pedals? My compression and time based effects? I had my tbes already plugged into my fx loop. Tnx
I don't currently have any other pedals because I use the bossgt100 via the 4CM so if I can borrow a few I'll make a video on the proper placement.
@@nathaniellarson8 thank you Nate that was extremely helpful.
