Sleeping Dogs - Police Behavior Analysis

- Sleeping Dogs is the only open-world game based in an Asian country (Hong Kong), as far as I know, therefore it should be interesting to see how the police differ from other typical open-world games such as GTA.

I always found it rather dumb that the cops don't care when enemy NPCs are fighting you and do nothing about.

It's to prevent mission interruptions and related misshaps. See: Mafia 2.

An obscure open world game you way want to do is The Getaway, it's set in a 1:1 recreation of London
Idk if you know this already but about the Knox van if you keep stealing and selling it repetitively eventually the heat will immediately rise from 2 to 3 and so on by the time you tried to steal the next van

Seems like Mafia 3 and Watch_Dogs 1 are the only 2 games ( that I know of ) which used Heat Zones the right way it seems.
Games like GTA IV made their Heat Zones where until you leave the zone, you couldn't lose the cops unless you made your way to a pay and spray.
Especially burdensome when you do find a good hiding spot from the police, but if you're not out of the zone you won't lose the heat.
Compared to Mafia 3 and Watch_Dogs 1 which used the zone as a dynamic restricted area, where you had to either hide or evade the police, the way it should behave.
I'm glad the whole GTA IV style Heat Zone fell out of fashion, in favor of a GTA V style Line of Sight / Hide and Seek style.
At least with Hide and Seek systems, they're more self-explanatory, and it gives the player the option to hide in situations where running is ill advised.
I agree, good comment. Scarface: The World is Yours uses something of this sort, but leans more towards the IV system, however, before visibly commiting a crime in front of police you can hide and lower your "visibility". Once you commit a visible crime or fill your visibility bar, you have to run, and in place remains a red heat zone.

@@revinravenzadiazabdilla9479 Yeah, well, it gives a good incentive to the player NOT to combat police, since that is counter productive to Tony's goals. Instead, one should focus on the myriad of gangs strewn around the city, something I think Watch Dogs 2 did well with it's enemy encampments and money bags and GTA V did rather poorly since the main trio don't have true enemies to fight in freeroam outside of messing with police, which as stated before SHOULDN'T be the player's goal, the police are there to punish visible crime/trouble making.
In gta 4 you leave the zone and can hide behind a wall or fence for example and police won’t see you… gta 4 wanted system is better than sleeping dogs and all games you mentioned. You never need to use a pay n spray. This coming from someone who has played the game yearly since release
@Cody Machado Your first sentence is precisely what OP described as a improper heat zone, in GTA IV you can only escape the police if "you leave the zone", even if you hide the wanted status do not go away and the cops will still find you as long as you are in the zone. OP was saying in the aforementioned games, you do not have to leave the heat zone to escape the police, as you can actually hide, more or less anyway.
You could've gave an better example that is GTA5, because at least in that game the wanted system uses the "field of vision" system instead of wanted zones, where the police have to actually see you to pursuit you, instead of having eagle vision that knows your exact location as long as you're in the zone.

This is a good analysis video. I love Sleeping Dogs and still playing the definitive edition even today. Great and fun game, one of my favourite.

6:40 it's quite impressive how they didn't immediately open fire at you, even though you were aiming at them, but the two on the sides just aimed at you, while the one in the middle tried to diffuse you. I bet in GTA they would just kill you and the hostage too lol

15:32 many, probably, people don't know, but if you trigger PTU operator at 2 heat level and less, he will try to arrest you, instead of shooting, but it will be easier to resist arrest, since you don't need to mash SHIFT very fast, and a prompt will appear

Dress up like an officer and they will assist you when in conflict with a civilian or enemy if the enemy hits the cop how they will shoot them or baton them if they are just attacking you they will run up and arrest them on sight but superintendent pendrew did not tell that wei is a san Francisco cop so the police will arrest wei as well read the police reports that your supervisor Ray gives you they really help.
One thing I do like about sleeping dogs is the police are alot more realistic than GTA. They both go to the point where they will shoot and not arrest, but in GTA they will shoot the moment you resist.

I think the police AI in this game is very similar to Mafia 3 but less aggressive at H1 level. However in this game. I think in the event of a collision with their car. A fine of $1000 would be better than getting busted as accidents even in real life happen but other than this, the game is fitting and the Police AI is about right to how the cops would react apart from the hostage situations as in the real world. The cops would call in sharp shooters to take out the suspect and leave the hostage intact. Other than that, its fine.
Definitive Edition defenitly downgrades some stuff. I don't know if you ever played the original one, Killergreece. But before then, when you commited crimes outside of the police line of sight, they would respond. If you fired a gun in public or started fight with random NPCs it wouldn't take long before you got a heat level and I preferred it that way.
Other then that, there used to be motorcycle cops which you sometimes could see on patrol, they had the same uniform as the basic ones but with a helmet, these seem to have been removed except for one encounter I had in a mission. And the navy blue PTU guys used to wear berets and the DSU tac guys had either a riot helmet or a tactical helmet.
Last but not least, heat used to go up way faster, it didn't require killing like 20 cops to go from heat 3 to 4. It only took like 3 or 4 back then. A side effect from this is you often can 'accidentally' end up killing the spawned cops before new ones spawn in, resulting in you losing the heat level and having to find cops again if you want a fight.
Damn. NGL that sounded like some shitty ass too scripted game design…
Yet people still love the Definitive Edition. I love how people on RUclips often complain about games being downgraded, yet they still play them,. People make no sense.

I enjoyed this a good bit. I personally think you could speed up a bit in between the lines of text if that's the format you want to maintain.
As in, make shorter durations on lines of text?
@@Thekillergreece that and take less time to demonstrate each point. Some other ppl might like that though. You might find your audience with the format you have.
@@sirtimatbob Yea, the reason why some lines last longer are because some viewers might be slow readers so I wanted to try to accommodate every viewer as possible. Furthermore, yes, this is the format I use in most video analysis (Police and AI) :)
They only react to scripted crime because the map is dense and cluttered (being Chinese and all), and due to the missions

I’m not sure If this is common knowledge or not but a trick of getting away is that the second you enter any of the safe houses you instantly lose all heat. I of course abused this with the Knox trucks 😂

I’ve Thought of the Police Behavior In Watch Dogs Legion. It’s Known as Albion Private Military Company.
No matter how hard I try, I was NEVER chased at level 4 or 5. And they’re very easy to lose.
