How DANGEROUS are GHETTOS in UKRAINE? Kharkiv.

  • I wanted to show one of the porest parts of my hood in Kharkiv, where financially struggling families and minority communities live in Soviet-era dormitories. I call it a 'ghetto,' and in some ways, it really feels like one.

    I fell in love with Ukraine back in 1998 and I visited every year or two until the war started. I was in Kharkiv several times, but mainly in the downtown. I still have many friends in various cities and I plan to return again in spring 2025 to visit my friends. Slava Ukraini.

    Oh the hoodie, the garment that gets no love 💔! It wasn't until I watched your video that I realized this sentiment went beyond the borders of the U.S. It seems it is universally associated with the unemployed, the downtrodden and the hooligans of the world. I wonder if the person who invented it realized that their creation would someday be used as camouflage for persons exploring the back alleys of society. 😂 ❤❤❤

    Hi Tatiana, thank you for this heart wrenching scene of the city you were raised in. One day out of these ashes will rise a village to love all over again. It will take a vision with brave souls like you. The tears and sorrow are too many over this pointless and tragic war. The dictators throughout history always get their just deserve in time. In the meantime try your best with your body and keep your wonderful mind safe.

    Hi, Tetiana. Just discovered your channel - enthusiastically liked and subscribed!...Your bravery for remaining in Kharkiv is commendable, and I am super impressed with your presentation skills, and the humanistic way that you introduce us to your city...It's good for us in the West to see what's going on there, so that we can get an idea of what needs to be done in the rebuild of your city. Some, not all, of those neighborhoods that you show us will be rebuilt, not in a brutalist Soviet or Russian style, but in a uniquely Ukrainian and European design. The kruschiyovkas will be torn down, and Kharkiv will take its place as one of the most beautiful and prosperous cities in Europe in the aftermath of this war. Thank you for the tour. Mabuhay from the Philippines...Slava ukraini!...

      What was the "ghetto" like in the USSR? Free housing, kindergartens, schools and higher education, medicine. Yes, the apartments were not given immediately, it was not very comfortable. And there were enough problems in general. But everyone lived peacefully, without fear for children and the future, without rampant crime and drug addiction, without hatred of neighbors or other peoples.
      The real ghettos began in Ukraine, Russia and other post-Soviet countries with the advent of capitalism. However, Tatiana told about it in the video.

    • @alexandernovikov5963
      @alexandernovikov5963 3 месяца назад +1

      Look at the map of the neighborhood where Tatiana was. The area was built up during the USSR. There are about 20-30 apartment buildings, 3 kindergartens and 2 schools with sports grounds inside the district. There is a fairly decent distance between the houses so that there is light, green spaces and a place for children's games.
      This is a typical late Soviet building in any major city in Russia, Ukraine and other republics.
      They don't build like that anymore (I'm from Russia). The houses have become taller, stand close to each other, and most of the space is occupied by parking for cars.

      @@paintsilj Not at all. Kharkiv has seen a lot of investment and development, especially in the city center, with modern parks, historic buildings, and large shopping malls. The area shown in the video isn’t representative of the whole city. It’s actually common in many large cities, even in wealthy countries, to see modern, well-kept areas alongside neighborhoods that are less developed or neglected due to various factors.

    Your comment about the Ukrainian Ghetto being safer than many areas in the US is sadly true. While the US is usually modern, clean and safe there are large areas where drugs and guns are always present. Just like in other parts of the World, poverty and ignorance are a cancerous blight. It is sad that the richest nation in the world is beset by a general lack of concern for the underclasses that live amongst us. It's not just in large US cities but many rural areas are actually worse and have out of control crime rates. Thanks for sharing your videos and observations.

    The problems with our "ghettos" in North America is mental illness and homelessness. We essentially have open air mental asylums where people with problems are left to live with minimal assistance. That is very different than in this video where it's just poorer people living their lives.
    How do you deal with and treat severe mental illness in Ukraine?

    Hi dear. I have enjoyed your walk. I see dilapidated neighbourhood similar to many in former Socialist countries. When work run out this areas went in to decline. It still seems nice. Nice pavement and road. Ferly clean. N rubbish everywhere. No burned cars. You walk freely. People go out with kids. Building are bit unloved but still way better than similar buildings in UK. Not sure if US have this type of buildings. But you should check US ghettos and you will quickly see that this Kharkiv neighbourhood does not compare to crap they are living in. Anyway kudos for trying to keep living life as normal as possible and trying to make it in to something meaningful. I have lived try war. It is like undeserved prison sentence. The problem with this video is the author is misusing a "ghetto" term. Ghetto is not just a poor district. A hallmark of a ghetto is that it is primarily occupied with a kind of minority, which is most often ethnic or religious. And this minority is often not on good terms with the outsiders. Since the districts the author is talking about are not populated by any sort of minorities, they for sure aren't as dangerous as the ghettos most of the Western viewers are familiar with.

    • @Вікторія3о

  • @vidong1704

    Not really correct to call them Ghettos.
    A Ghetto means a Jewish Quarter. Those are not.
    Later it came to mean an area of some rejected race/ethnic group in America.
    It always meant an area in which there is an isolated ethnic group. Gypsies for example.
    But in these, it's the same Ukrainians as anywhere else, just poorer.
    These are just called " poor neighborhoods" or " working class neighborhoods".

    • @TetianaSim
      @TetianaSim  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks for your comment! It’s still a ghetto in a sense, as there are minorities from former Soviet republics in Asia, like Tajiks. In the early '90s, many Vietnamese people lived in this area due to the growth of the largest open-air market in Kharkiv. I didn’t show much in this short video.

    Hie tetiana..it is not scaring at al..compare to france paris where I spent 4 months before my return to asturias and then scotalnd..where I saw sceneries that look like a horror movie and ugly sites near paris..paris I can tell you is awfull compare to kharkiv where you live..

      Thanks for sharing that! I actually felt the same when I visited Paris. I stayed in a neighborhood near the railway station, and it wasn't the cleanest or safest area. It had its own charm, but I definitely felt a bit uneasy at times.

    Having seen videos of some other towns and cities in Ukraine it appears that the country is littered with dilapidated ruins of buildings. I guess from soviet times. Hopefully after you win the war your government will use some of the billions of NATO funding to tidy up these cities.
    Can you tell us what make (name/brand) of tractors were manufactured by the Kharkive Tractor company?

      @eyesopen7946 I'm not here to defend the Ukrainian government-they’ve definitely had 30 years to do more. But looking around, you’ll find plenty of cities in Russia in similar or even worse conditions. I should film some of Kharkiv’s better areas next time to show that some improvements have been made.

      In contrast to 'eyesopen7946' I do very much support Zelenzky and 100% want Ukraine to win victory and a lasting freedom for their country and for them to become a member of NATO. But as I have said before, they will need to clean up the corruption that has destroyed the country since soviet era. And it's time they set up a proper social welfare system and house and support their unemployed and elderly and disabled citizens. With a clean government and a modern infrastructure Ukraine could be one of the richest most prosperous productive countries in Western Europe, in time to come. Slava Ukraine Heroaim Slava.💛💙🇺🇦

      I'm of British descent and there is no way I would support the clowns you have running the UK now. You have obviously never been to Ukraine... I have, 4 times in the last 14 years. Zelensky got over 70% of the votes when he was originally elected, unheard of in a country with over 30 different political parties running in the election. Elections in Ukraine have been monitored since the 1990's by observers from different countries to make sure there is no "hanky panky" going on, unlike Russian elections where they just toss out a number in the 90%+ range and call it good. Yes, there was/is corruption in Ukraine, but when your society collapses as it did in the 90's, the jackals come out.

      Unfortunately, I can’t say for sure if they’re here legally or not. There’s a pretty big Vietnamese community nearby, drawn by the massive market that attracts a lot of people from Vietnam to work there.
