Hi Tatiana from the US! Great video. Love the "book benches"and "hands pot" around the tree! The bathroom was nice too. 17 universities wow! Your metros are amazing too. Ive been to Kyiv but now I have to visit Kharkiv. Good job!
Those are beautiful areas of Kharkiv. Adequate money and careful design can help accomplish a lot. When we are at peace we are creatively inspired to build attractive places.
Beautiful city, thank you so much for showing us all this. I love the fish tank in the toilets, such dedication and so clean. 🙂 You are so optimistic and happy, in such sad time in Ukraine, fair play to you. 👍 I will visit one day for sure. 🙏🙂
Thank you for that little tour of Kharkiv. One thing I was very impressed with was the beauty of those train stations. If only all stations could be like that.
I want you to know that, for what it is worth, you and all the other inhabitants of Kharkiv as well as all the Ukrainians have all my admiration and deep respect. Glory to you all
Thank you so much for the super thanks! 😊 You’ve visited quite a few cities in Western Ukraine that I, as a Ukrainian, haven’t had the chance to explore yet-how wonderful! I hope one day, when it’s safe, you’ll be interested in discovering Eastern Ukraine as well!
Thank you for being our tour guide. :-) I enjoyed Central Park and Sumskaya Street the most. Malls have become somewhat anachronistic here, but they were rarely connected to public transport. Instead, they are surrounded by huge parking lot moats. The thing I loved the most was the complete absence of trash. It's reminiscent of Germany, where I grew up. Not only are people paid to clean it up and there are receptacles every 100m or so, but people have the good manners and pride in their city not to throw it down in the first place. The USSR-era subways are something I don't believe I will ever understand. The buildings of the era, the scale and scope of Realist architecture and urban planning, were designed to be de-humanizing; one feels tiny and insignificant in those spaces. Buildings were 'edifices;' not only was adornment avoided, the architects also avoided using the scale of windows and entryways to humanize the buildings. Yet, the subways were lavish and opulent. In other parts of the world, with some highly notable exceptions among major hubs, subway stations are far more utilitarian. I'm glad that Kharkiv opted to continue that with the subway expansion; "people tubes" are very unpleasant. Cheers and thanks!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I’m glad you enjoyed Central Park and Sumskaya Street-they’re definitely some of Kharkiv’s highlights. I totally understand your thoughts on malls and Soviet architecture. And yes, Kharkiv is indeed one of the cleanest cities in Ukraine-the Central Park is absolutely spotless!
Indeed, the architecture of the high-rise buildings is highly utilitarian and it oppresses me, especially in neighborhoods with 9- to 16-story buildings. However, I would relate this more to cost-cutting than to deliberate "dehumanization". As for the surrounding areas, they are quite inviting-much more, to my thinking, compared to the blocks built during the last three decades. These spaces are open, spacious, thoughtfully designed, richly vegetated, and diverse. I explored dozens, if not hundreds, of residential blocks in Kharkov, and it was always a pleasure to visit them and spend some time inside.
@@mazurivan85 I grew up in a "commie block" and have fond memories of living there. Ours was mid-rise, four stories, part of the post-war reconstruction. Each apartment had a fairly substantial garden plot along with storage space in the attic and cellar, the blocks were surrounded by a considerable amount of communal green space. It was a great place to grow up. They are far more pleasant than condominium complexes, especially once fixed up and painted. "Dehumanizing" may not be the right word, and I wasn't applying it to the residential blocks. I was referring to the public spaces that were built: the immensely wide, straight boulevards leading to huge and (in my view) forbidding government buildings. The hardscaped plazas with a gigantic monument in the middle. Before the reunification, we took some trips into East Germany to visit relatives. I always felt dwarfed by the scale of everything. It wasn't a place where you wanted to be. Years later, I went to a similar district outside Krakow. The city itself stole my heart, and though the Poles have done much to soften the Soviet district, it's reminiscent of what I saw in the early 80's, before all the big Lenin's were torn down.
Thank you for a wonderful tour of your home city. The Metro was impressive and compared to the gritty mole holes in NYC called the Subway your system is a gem to be proud of. The shopping mall was unexpected as I didn't think Ukraine had moved this far beyond the monolithic Soviet model. The basement market is actually impressive and I'd love to shop there. Thanks for sharing your adventures on a cloudy and wet day.
Ah, very cool Miss Tanya! StarBright Productions fans would be proud to shop with you at this mall. It looks like a really nice place. The restroom at Central Park was absolutely beautiful. You mentioned that Joseph Stalin was behind making the train stations like underground palaces. I did a video on the Moscow Metro subway system a few years ago. Russian model Jeny Smith was our tour guide. She explained that Stalin was behind making the stations beautiful by hiring European and mostly British designers and architects to oversee the beautiful creative buildings. The restroom at the park is quite reflective of that as well. Thank you so much for the awesome tour of your beautiful historic city including the park, university, and the lovely mall. Maybe you will take me shopping at that mall one day. Stay safe! Cheers, Danny 💗🌹💗
