  • After planting fresh new seed in your yard, it is important to cover it with some kind of of protection and fertilizer. Installing straw matting is just one of many ways to do this.
In this video Grant explains how to install straw matting (also called straw blankets) on top of your newly planted seed.
A few things to keep in mind:
    1. Make sure when installing straw matting, you staple it down - you want the grass to grow through the matting, as opposed to pushing it up. Along the edges, you should put a staple every 4-5 feet; in the middle you should put one about every 8 feet (these are general rules, you just need enough staples to keep it from coming up).
    2. If you are installing more than one blanket of straw, it is a good idea to overlap them about 6 inches.
Although there are several options for covering your seed, straw matting is best for larger areas.
For smaller areas, Penn Mulch is a good option instead, or you could also you bale straw. These are also good options if you prefer to stay away from plastics.
