Actually the joke was when he showed the clip from the actual movie. As a fan of the actual movie, the fact that they brought any attention to it makes me believe they were also. Extra points.
Yeah, but this was the late ‘80s. Those threads wouldn’t make most folks’ diary entry for the day unless they walked into the room without Star in them.
What’s hilarious is that all the crazy came from the director himself, who was the same guy behind the first movie. Warner Bros kept begging him to return for a sequel and he kept turning them down, then finally agreed to it only if they gave him complete creative control. They agreed, and the absolute madman just decided to turn the entire thing into a batshit crazy self-parody mocking the fact that he didn’t even think the film needed to exist in the first place.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Peele's acting in this sketch (and in general)? I mean he's just a phenomenal actor and I think many people overlook that due to his humor or their intense like for Key (who I'm a fan of as well), but he was great in this. From everything from the way he held himself to the way he executed such a difference in intonation and inflection in speech to the actual change in his voice, to create such a rasp. He's amazing. I have a hard time imagining the calm and composed Jordan Peele to this flamboyant and extreme character (and all his other characters, i.e. Meegan, Continental Guest, Ester, Carlito, etc). I really do enjoy watching Peele.

Rewatched Gremlins 2 yesterday after only seeing it when it came out on VHS. This is the perfect summary of the movie. We didn't realize the cinematic masterpiece we had in front of us for all these long decades.
The Hulk Hogan section wasn't in the VHS version. Instead of his scene in the theater, the gremlins get into your vcr and mess around. Which scene do you remember?
Jordan Peele is phenomenal in this, what an incredible range he has. Also, this is such a wholesome skit about motivating people. Absolutely one of my favorites all time!
Can we take a moment to appreciate the set decoration, hair and wardrobe in this skit? Plus cigarette smoke. So 80's. So perfect. Even the chyron at the every end is 80's inspired. Might be Key & Peele's greatest work.
Can anyone remind me of the name of that other movie from the same time period? It's not Critters. I remember it being funny. And the creatures resembled Gremlins. I know there's 1 scene where one of the little things calls a girl a little buttercup.... Anyone?
You cannot overstate how incredible, nuanced, and indelible this performance by Jordan Peele is. I've watched this so many times, and every time you see little quirks, subtle expressions and details that make it such a masterclass in creating a character that's both idiosyncratic and flamboyant without resorting to an outlandish caricature. Having lived and worked in Hollywood, I can tell you this kind of person definitely exists, and Jordan was able to reveal his amazing versatility and depth of acting and understanding of humans that resulted in such a memorable and believable persona. Bravo!
The little nuances, the way he has a way with characters.. it's truly amazing. I thought of Hollywood from "Manniquin" with the flamboyant glasses and how he annociated words. I was dying from how funny and spot on he was.
That's the trademark rhythm pattern from the legendary Roland TR-808 drum machine, used widely in 80s music, including Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
I would love to see this guy’s origin story. How he became so influential that Hollywood Studios would send him out to have the final say on 80s biggest movie hits 😂
Gremlins 2 was actually directed by Joe Dante, the original director of Gremlins 1. Dante *DIDN'T* want to make Gremlins 2, but after the studio kept asking him, he agreed on one condition: that he could do WHATEVER he wanted with it. So he made it a satire of the first film.
Guess who didn't like Gremlins 2? Writer of the first one, Chris Columbus! He was pissed at the change in direction, seeing it as disrespectful, and has been recently talking about writing the third film which is in development, as taking it back to the style of the first and 'making up' for G2! I think a lot of people would disagree with him there......But I guess it's a similar situation to when Halloween 4 was made to make up for Halloween 3, Last Crusade made to make up for Temple Of Doom. It's like saying Terminator 2 needed to go back to the style of Terminator, or Aliens needed to be like Alien.
I guess if he was bothered to make a sequel repeatedly, but I wouldn't imagine why he wouldn't want to. He didn't even need to use a new cast or anything there are many possibilities that can be done with these green tiny tinkering terrors. Though Gremlins 2 kind of did it with the smart building/lab. But imagine if like we had a scientist character similar to Billy's dad who is studying Gremlins and it gets out and multiplies and starts messing with his various inventions and what not. Or even Gremlins in a not Disney World esque theme park, messing with the animatronics, hiding inside mascot costumes. Or even a military complex could you imagine them driving a tank?
Preferred Gremlins 2. Because they did this. At the time fans of Gremlins were appalled but as a kid I found it hilarious. They just wanted to fit in as many gags as possible and many films became classics off that.
Don't you mean it's hilarious for the people that HAVE actually seen Gremlins 1, then expected the same or better from the steaming mess that is Gremlins 2?
@@bonbonS1969 It sounds like a bunch of crap to the people who haven't seem Gremlins 2, so it shouldn't be hilarious to them. Comment directed at the original post..
This is definitely Jordan Peele's best performance in any of these skits. Not only does he project a manic charisma that is just delightful to watch, but the costume of Star Magic Jackson Jr is somehow pitch perfect and suits Peele fantastically. Like he is dripping rn.
The way his shoulders are constantly bouncing in rhythm too. You can tell that he just loves living in this character because it’s so upbeat, fun and ridiculous. Kinda reminds me of the Jiminy Glick character for Martin Short where even he is entertained not knowing what he’ll do next.
@@VileEPeyote ?? I know it's Peele. Are you being willfully weird here? And no, Jordan Peele is not the spitting image of Joe Dante in any circumstance, considering Joe Dante is a white guy, who's never dressed the way Peele looks in this sketch. Do an image search of Meshach Taylor in the movie "Mannequin," from 1987. Same bright flamboyant clothes, and nearly the same style sunglasses, and he's a black guy as well. It's also from the same time period as Gremlins 2. This entire sketch is basically an ode to 1987-1991 in general. Seriously have no idea what you're even arguing at this point. !!
@@CarissaConti i'm convinced you're confusing the two people. Yes, Peele is dressed as Mesach Taylor for the most part. I'm not talking about Peele, I'm referring to the other half of the comedy duo, Keegan Michael Key. Key is made to look like Joe Dante. Same hair. Same glasses. Same Cosby sweater. look up pics of Dante when filming gremlins 2. Or seek out the bts content from the dvd that i've no doubt is here on youtube. I'm sorry my slight hyperbole of "spitting image" threw you for a loop as all you see is race, apparently.

@@adarsh8099 Nah, all that crazy shit is actually in Gremlins 2. Now, Gremlins 1 was actually a huge success. Made a lot of money and the whole thing is pretty iconic. The "3 rules" line was pretty much ingrained in old pop culture. Gremlins 2 was basically just made to make fun of Hollywood sequels and the idea of a Gremlins sequel in general. It's pretty much a satire.
The moment he started by saying "they bring me in when they about to drop a deuce" I knew this would be a masterpiece. Even then, I had severely under valued it's perfection.
1:45 Brain aka Brain Gremlin, 2:06 Mohawk when he becomes Spider Mohawk, 2:16 Bat Gremlin, 2:32 Greta, 2:52 Daffy, 3:07 Electric Gremlin, 4:11 Vegetable Gremlin. Those are their actual names
They didn't mention Tattoo Gremlin with the Warner Brothers logo tattooed on its chest, phantom of the opera gremlin, princess gremlin, George And Lenny (based off the characters from Of Mice and Men), Assistant Gremlin who gets shredded, the second Flasher Gremlin, silhouetted gremlins that make shadow hand puppets in the theatre, bartender gremlin, a couple of stock buying/selling gremlins, elevator gremlins, wicked witch of the west gremlin etc.
Jon Mercano no shit the sketch wouldn't of been a sketch it would've been a movie unto it's self if they listed all the gremlins in the film, but they should have mentioned one more thing that wouldn't make it too long but even funnier by mentioning that he fucks the lady gremlin in the toilet at the end ahah xD
Nah, it wouldn't have been half as funny without the 80s music and with the having to wait thirty minutes to reset the camera every time there's a mild perspective change. Comedy is all about timing, and this skit does so well because it has great flow which absolutely wouldn't have been felt while recording.
There is no "extras" in this scene. These are actual actors. Extras don't say anything, they appear in the background, that is it. So since these are ALL actual actors, Im sure it wasnt THAT hard to keep a striaght face.
Honestly I feel like this sketch is first and foremost for the people who actually remember seeing the movie (which I'm sure K&P did when coming up with this haha) who will laugh as they remember how increasingly absurd the actual movie was. And the end caption is like "well, maybe the people who missed out might get a laugh too" :)
I would love to know whether the moment at 4:18 is accidental or intentional - the moment where Peele walks into a column. My guess is that this wasn't scripted at all, and that this really reflects Jordan Peele's absolute mastery of thinking and acting in character. The moment comes and goes so quickly it doesn't even interrupt the flow of the sketch at all.
Not only that but they managed to time his clumsy response movements to the music beats exactly, or the other way around, I don't know. But it's so perfect that even if it was unscripted it winds up being the cherry on top of the whole thing.
This sketch is almost funnier when you know the real story behind Gremlins 2. Joe Dante did _NOT_ want to return to make this movie. He was happy with and exhausted by the original Gremlins and definitively wanted to move on and do other things, and Warner Brothers tried to make the sequel without him. They failed hard, and begged him back with _triple the budget and complete creative control._ To make a movie that he felt should not _have_ a sequel. So, Mr. Dante was like "well alright, fuck it." That's why half this movie is insanity and the other half is pointing out plot holes in the original. He still did a great job though. It's a fun movie to watch when you know what the filmmaker is up to.
I saw Gremlins when I was so young I never knew what the filmmaker was up to but I knew Gremlins 2 was 'odd', and felt nothing like the original, it was so far from the genesis and this sketch feels like it feels in the gap. It didn't stop me enjoying the film though.
It's the greatest motion picture of all time and you should never see it because it will make every other movie you ever watch look like a hot circle of garbage.
"I gotta go put some cowboys in "Back to the Future III." I was a kid during this era. I saw both "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," and "Back to the Future Part III" in theaters. I love that fact!

What the hell are you people talking about
I guess if he was bothered to make a sequel repeatedly, but I wouldn't imagine why he wouldn't want to.
It’s hilarious for the people who never seen gremlins 2. This sounds like a bunch of crap to them. But all these “ideas” really did happen 😂😂😂
That’s the premise of the joke, genius
@@bonbonS1969 It sounds like a bunch of crap to the people who haven't seem Gremlins 2, so it shouldn't be hilarious to them. Comment directed at the original post..
@@cofpaddy Same here. I thought it was hilarious because it was so ridiculous.
This is definitely Jordan Peele's best performance in any of these skits. Not only does he project a manic charisma that is just delightful to watch, but the costume of Star Magic Jackson Jr is somehow pitch perfect and suits Peele fantastically. Like he is dripping rn.
I would say his performance in the Family Matters sketch is his best, but this is waaaaaay up there!
he is just the character Hollywood from the movie Mannequin
The way his shoulders are constantly bouncing in rhythm too. You can tell that he just loves living in this character because it’s so upbeat, fun and ridiculous. Kinda reminds me of the Jiminy Glick character for Martin Short where even he is entertained not knowing what he’ll do next.
Yes, his delivery is amazing and it's difficult dialogue too.
The 80's music is what drove this sketch. 😂💀
The sudden stop when Hulk Hogan came up was everything!
It’s like a glorious mix of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and “Cruel Summer”.
I like the way the beats just drops after he mentions the first gremlin 😂😂 hysterical
it's the feeling of "Heeeere we goooo!" in a beat. So excellent.
and how the beat cuts off when they mention Hulk Hogan
This is the single greatest sketch in the history of sketch comedy.
facts
100% agree. This is art.
The fact that gremlins 2 is real makes this so much better
Their show is the best sketch show in the history of comedy. These two guys are so crazy talented it's mind-blowing.
This was some of the greatest acting I have seen in sketch for sure.
The fact that Key is totally dressed/hair/glasses like Director Joe Dante is just a beautiful touch. Perfection!
He's dressed like Meshach Taylor from "Mannequin."
@@CarissaConti that's peele
@@CarissaConti That would be Peele dressed like that. Key is a spitting image of Dante, relatively speaking.
They’re not lying! Literally everything they said is in the movie!
thats the joke...
🤔😮😦😨
What movie are they talking about? I'm curious now
@@ramessesthegreat5542 Gremlins 2 , which I didn’t even know existed. ie, the title and subject of this skit.

As a kid Gremlins 2 was so fun and amazing. So thankful for that script doctor.
This man has an Academy Award.
As he should.
“It’s G2 people!!” 🤣
I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but the running into the wall at the end is effing genius.
ikr. It made it authentic.
it is. and it was. haha
That was perfect
I’ve seen nearly every key and peele sketch and this is by far my absolute favorite. Peeles acting in this is flawless

Same here! Electrical Gremlin!
This was BRILLIANT! Not just as a comedy piece but also for showing how to motivate and reward creative people. This may be my favorite K&P clip ever.
Mine 2
It's absolutely mine! And they set the bar very high.
I just love how versatile these guys are. Do you know how amazing you have to be to play such a diverse range of roles so well? Damn
Deandra Brown case and point Michaels gonna be in the new 2018 Shane black predator film and of course Jordan peeles 2017 film Get Out. Absolutely talented brothers as a mix raced black and white guy myself I fully die anytime they bring up being mixed they ain't even exaggerating about the dumb shit that happens to us just because people know that we have black in us, is fucking ridiculous! I love Gremlins 2, and I have to admit Peele is at his best in this skit. Genius work.
Nate Boyd lol he really is. I love it when he gets to become characters that are totally unexpected bc he kills it every. Single. Time.
I read the novelization of this amazing movie when I was 9 and I transform every time I think of that memory. Underrated masterpiece.

@@adarsh8099 It was.
It's pretty much a satire.
gremlins was big tho
Star's stomp that cuts off the music when the hulkster comes up is 24k gold
The moment he started by saying "they bring me in when they about to drop a deuce" I knew this would be a masterpiece. Even then, I had severely under valued it's perfection.

I haven't watched #2, are they really all in the movie??
All of em, dude Lol
This explains every sequel, reboot and soft reboot, but the scene is definitely missing _cocaine_.
Yup
I know it would've been too long. Just saying there were quite a few other ridiculous gremlins.
the shadow puppet scene was so ridiculous
U sur are awesome
Jon Mercano wasnt there a Dr. psychiatrist Gremlin ?

They want the ones who never seen the movie, to actually see that what this K&P sketch, is true! 😅
Right!😆
Wonder how many takes it took due to the extras who probably lost their shit trying to keep a straight face filming this. Hilarious
Nah, it wouldn't have been half as funny without the 80s music and with the having to wait thirty minutes to reset the camera every time there's a mild perspective change. Comedy is all about timing, and this skit does so well because it has great flow which absolutely wouldn't have been felt while recording.
Seriously. Peele looks hilarious
0:42
There is no "extras" in this scene. These are actual actors. Extras don't say anything, they appear in the background, that is it. So since these are ALL actual actors, Im sure it wasnt THAT hard to keep a striaght face.
Stfu William crawled crawling crawfish cradled Crawford the IV
this is why i love joe dante. not only did this conversation NEVER HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE. IT HAPPENNED ENTIRELY IN HIS HEAD DURING WRITING.
Joe Dante didn't give a F*CK and he made one of the greatest (certainly the most tongue-in-cheek) sequels ever.
The background music is what completes this masterpiece
... then the music stops .....
When you need to study knowing damn well the test is tomorrow but you begin a key and peele binge
I always love it when the character from Mannequin shows up to tell the Gremlins writers what to do. 👏👏👏
That's who I thought of Hollywood
Meshach Taylor!
I do love the "ALL OF THIS IS IN THE MOVIE" caption at the end. REALLY important to let people know that.
Always wondered mysel
And this is the reason why "Gremlins 2" is...so fucking awesome!
Was Jordan playing the living incarnation of the 80's?
He was Hollywood from the 80's movie Mannequin.
Yes and also the personification of 80's coke.
This was a brilliant idea. Absolutely hilarious. One of the more underappreciated Key and Peele sketches.
These guys are comedy icons😂
🪑
Nah
This is honestly one of the most brilliant comedy sketches I’ve ever seen. The Wikipedia page on Gremlins 2 is really worth checking out.
This guy did a great job on the Fast&Furious and Transformers sequels.
its really is impressive the range of characters they can play
It didn't stop me enjoying the film though.
i gotta get me a vhs of gremlins 2 asap
Joe Cat the VHS actually doesn't have Hulk Hogan but instead Gremlins messing with the tape causing it to change to a John Wayne shootout

"I gotta go put some cowboys in "Back to the Future III."
I was a kid during this era. I saw both "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," and "Back to the Future Part III" in theaters. I love that fact!
The director was just interviewed and says this is exactly how it went down. The studio was desperate for a sequel, gave him a deadline and let him do whatever he wanted as long as he got it made by that date.
