The dad part worried me. Doesn't HE love his kid as least as much as his wife? Wouldn't HE rather die than watch his child be eaten by zombies? Also, doesn't he understand the concept that whether or not it's the truth each and every day of your life, you still tell your kid that you love them more than anything. Because saying anything else makes you the a*hole.
I frequented AITA for a time, and you would be ASTONISHED at how many dads (UGH IT’S ALWAYS DADS) who would choose to save their partner’s life over their child’s, and who get offended if their partner doesn’t feel the same. Perhaps the only thing more astonishing is how often this gets brought up.
Never had kids, but I'd imagine you'd feel a different way, but at the same time both types of love would be to the level in which you won't get, of all things, JEALOUS of the other. It just seems like someone who's insecure and, consciously or not, is looking for reasons to doubt his wife's love for him. Something he should have an open, ego-free talk with her about, probably (perhaps with a councilor).

@@shayelea In terms of evolutionary biology, this actually isn't that surprising. Women have a finite number of eggs and are only fertile for a short period of time, so they see their offspring as irreplaceable and are wired to protect them at all costs. They also have to go through pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, so they spend years using their body to further the development and viability of their children and are invested in their survival. Biologically, men don't have these incentives. They are hardwired to reproduce and that's it. So when asked if they'd rather save their wife or their child, they'll save their wife because their wife can produce more offspring.
Not saying that I agree with this guy -- he's clearly an asshole and from how insecure he was in the post, he probably has some sort of psychological issue.
I remember this post from AITA and people definitely ripped him a new one. Pathetic little man child.
There's also the weird way he phrased the part about his sister...
Even if the wife didn't love her child more than she loved you, what kind of parent WOULDN'T say "Your dad and I will protect you" to their child?? Children need to feel supported. Could you imagine if the mum had said something else?

according to some dumbass on another thread, they should shove a gun in the kid's hand and tell her they'll kill zombies together and the kid will fight the best because anything else just "keeps your child little and dependent". because you know, 11 year olds should be independent!

I agree that you can’t diagnose someone you’ve never met, you also can’t diagnose someone if you’re not a doctor or psychologist. However without trying to diagnose anyone this ‘man’ behaves like a narcissist by believing he should be loved more than his own child, and his overreaction in this situation is super creepy

Meeeeh. The way she reacted to the "she got pregnant bit" was a bit prejudiced. What did she expect? "We dated for 8 months and then WE got pregnant"? That would be such a dick way to put it.
Most reasonable people don't open their mouths about stuff like this lol. I usually see stuff like this and just say to myself dumbass, shake my head and move on. It is a waste of energy to me at least to respond to people like this, because half the time if not more they already know deep down that they're wrong. All they're doing is reaching out for self-affirmation to make them feel better about that situation.
What the hell is wrong with those guys thinking their children are less important than them, I would not think twice about sacrificing me or My wife for my children in a survival situation but, I would definitely sacrifice myself for my wife too. When you have a child they should always be the priority.
I started my period at 8. Thought I was dying. Hid the underwear and everything so my grandparents wouldn't have to deal with knowing I was gonna die. I definitely feel this little girls reaction when I found out what was going on.
A dose of Katherine Ryan's logic always makes my day.

@KC She's had a lot of flack for this but I'm a Mom with a kid at school who has had to deal with playground moms so I rather enjoyed the first scene and a lot of the others. It isn't perfect but I enjoyed it and I didn't want to stop watching it so yeah, I would recommend. I'd certainly watch another series. I love Kathryn and her unapologetic nature. Some of us are too nice sometimes WWKD? 😘

My mom saw an Oprah episode when I was little where she asked couples if they had their husband and kid drowning and only one could be saved (ie Titanic scenario where you CAN fit 2 people on the door, but not 3) who would you save? Some number, I forget now, of the women said they'd save the husbands because they could have more children.
My mom said no matter what, she would save me over anyone ever no matter what.
It's not that uncommon for girls as young as 9 to start having their periods. Even in the past. Yes the average age is older but it's just not that uncommon.
It's just that we mythologised periods like "oh now you are a woman" so we get super freaked out when an obvious child passes that threshold.
I think it's also to do with the fact that were much better fed now than we were in any point in history; being a healthy weight and not, yknow, saving all your energy on not starving, means shit like periods come sooner. Historically, there are many examples of noble women/girls (who were well fed) marrying and having children as young as 12, while working women/girls would have married and started having kids a little bit later (tho still v young by today's standards)
I mean, every person who has children should love them more than they love anybody else or themselves... Sadly that's not always the case
Love has nothing to do with whether you're raising them well, and is often used as the excuse when you're NOT doing your job as a parent.

Saw a news story a few years ago where a car crashed into a river with a mother, father and child inside. The father manages to get out, swims to the passenger side and rescued his wife. He then said he was too exhausted to rescue his child who then drowned.

Yeah my mum got her first one when she was 9... didn't get a second till she was 11, but still was shocking to her as she thought she was dying, because she'd over heard a conversation of somone dying from bladder cancer peeing blood so figured that was what was happening (as 9year old logic would).... anyway she's now 58... so yeah that was a while ago

Men are jealous of children for a very simple reason: our society pampers, spoils and centers us in a way that is reminiscent of how we're treated as children, so when this privileged is called into question many of us feel those childlike feelings.
This reminded me of a conversation I had with my parents after we were in a boating accident and were stuck in the middle of a lake with no boat or floatation devices and my dad had to choose between helping me or my mom. After the incident, he asked my mom what she would have done if he'd chosen to help her instead and she said, "I would have drowned you myself...and then probably drowned from the effort of doing that."

As a grown man I would like to admit to you here and now that we are, in fact, just adult sized children.
Also a mother should love their kid(s) more then the husband. A guy gives a bit of DNA while mom gives: DNA, cell wall, and organelles. Mom then carries the child, inside their body,for about 9mo, plus or minus a bit, while providing all nutrition. Once the child is born moms body produces, in most cases, the nutrition needed to keep said child alive and health till it is about to eat solid food.

I'm having trouble believing the story with the guy's wife putting their kids before him in this 'make believe' senario. I mean, he's had his daughter for ELEVEN years!! Has he not loved her? Put her to bed and read her a story? Drove her to school?

Welcome to the world of self-centering man babies. It is rather crowded, as most women can tell you.
Doesn't sound made up at all, he just sounds like he has a personality disorder, which is probably why you find it so unbelievable. Certain personality disorders impair a person's ability to feel empathy, so it's not surprising that he doesn't care about his daughter and wants to leave his wife over something so insignificant.
I can think of several people who i i know in real life who would do similar things. A lot of men demand the illusion that their wife loves them as much as their children.

I agreed with all except the first one. He may well be an asshole, but not for refusing to move in just because his partner is pregnant. If your relationship isn’t strong then it’s just a mess to add living together and raising a baby. However 100% he should have been more careful (girlfriend too) about the risk of pregnancy.

Yes, bald cat, his choice matters, despite how many people think differently. But it's a decision they need to come to together.
He may well be right in not wanting to commit to a person who he's not sure about. Why be with someone you don't love? For the sake of the baby? That could ruin everyone's lives in this scenario.
Plus we have no idea the circumstances of her getting pregnant, (birth control is not just his responsibility), the condom may have broken, they may not even have had sex, etc. Lots of shit can happen. Sadly, from the sounds of it, this is really not something he wants, but he may be forced into this decision.
I kinda agree with you. Having a kid makes you responsible for the kid, it does not mean you have to be in a relationship you don't want to be in. Honestly, kudos for her for keeping it, despite the hardship, she sounds like a brave woman, but he does not seem like he does not want to raise the kid. Relations are hard, they fail all the time, regardless of age or history, but taking care of your kid is sacred. I don't think he's an asshole, i imagine reversing the genders, i mean that would be totally fine, a woman not wanting a relationship with the father of her unborn child, wouldn't it? On the other hand you also have to be practical, if they can't afford 2 of everything, better to come to an arrangement, including living together regardless of how they feel, at least until the todler years. At this point you put the kid first.

I had my first period 2 weeks before my 11th birthday and that was in the 1970s. In fact, my mother also had her first period 2 weeks before her 11th birthday (weird huh?). I remember reading something at that time that said that the usual age range was 9-16. So I don't think 9 is anything new.

I would be horrified if I found out my parents loved eachother more than me or my siblings and even more so if my future spouse loves me over my kid. You are a parent and you should love your kid and be willing to do everything to make sure they're happy and healthy. You shouldn't have favourites

That poor girl! My lady started at 10. It would be great to be able to celebrate her introduction to womanhood, but at 9, she might not be ready to appreciate it. I'm hoping the parents have some good books for her (the new Our Bodies, Ourselves, and when in a few years, The Clitoral Truth, so that she can learn about her anatomy and how to find pleasure), but the fact that she's comfortable talking to her mum should help a lot.
