@@magicfordogs I went into the series for the comedy and found myself proper sobbing about 5min in. Dem single mum home truths innit. Fucking love Katherine Ryan.
I loved this show, and my roommate loved it too. I still don't understand the negative reviews, they're mostly just criticisms about how Katherine's characters aren't "likable enough". As if no other comedies have created outrageously unlikable characters for comedic effect...
exactly I mean, that's the whole point. Like someone said, what about Curb? Never mind that-- WHAT ABOUT IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA? One of the most successful comedies and it's hella 'dark', or rather not positive, both in content and characterizations.
I appreciate the show she's created and the humor. I also, however, appreciate the fact that I can choose to not spend my time watching shows where the main characters are shit people.
Great show, written so clever and creatively and beautifully produced. Love how she is challenging socially accepted behaviour and standards, but at the same time not trying to idealise new sets of rules. It's very much about just being yourself as you are, respecting that and not necessarily needing a 'prince' to complete you. Thank you for making this series! I would be sad to not see a second season, but I fear it may be somewhat to controversial for mainstream public.
I love this show for all the reasons you pointed out. You should also check out "Can't Cope Won't Cope" and "Derry Girls" on Netflix if you want to watch other shows with a similar spirit. :)
I hate the way female comedians are treated, usually by insecure straight men and insecure women. Why, and this happens aaall the time, do professional women get so openly called out or judged by what they wear when it has no bearing on their profession? This never happens to men. It’s pure sexism. That aside, I Iove this show - it’s funny and with heart, well crafted and expertly written. I’ve been a fan of Katherine for years, so I’m pleased she’s had the recognition, talent and opportunity to do this!
Loved the weird family unit dynamic in this show! But it ended so suddenly! I wish they had kept on with the pregnancy storyline into the second season.
Excellent mini series with hilarious, solid performances. I enjoyed hating the Duchess’s ruthless manipulation of everybody whilst being an obviously accomplished, fierce, black mum. The best wardrobe since sex and the city.
Honestly the ending part was not satisfactory... Should've been a lil bit more honest with the daughter at the end.and be a lil kind to Evans . They are keeping her in the comfort bubble and not letting her aware of the reality which is not healthy.
What are you one about? Parents own relationship issues are not their children issues. There is no need for a kid to know that her parents try to hate fuck each other in a dark alley to conceive another baby. Also Evan was a total dick at the end there. He got hurt so he tried to hurt 9 yo.
@@marius4iasi it wasn't about their relationship, it was about her father in general. I'm sorry, but trying to upkeep the father's image as a great guy when he's not is nothing but feeding into an outdated societal standard of "every kid needs to have two parents". No, they don't, and if their sperm donor is a jackass, they need to know. No, not "have the right to know" - NEED to know.
@@marius4iasi plus Evan wasn't trying to hurt Olive, he just blurted it out after she asked why he was hitting her father. That wasn't vicious, just poor impulse control.

watched it all in one day, tbh the humour wasn't really my thing but I did love that haircut scene and it made me tear up, now that i know that really happened i think i wish it had had a few more 'real' scenes. I felt like she let her daughter plan her life and at the end she wasn't going to be happy. Dr. dentist was more understanding than anyone i've ever met and i think she was just cruel to him at the end, he was telling Olive the truth and i think thats what kids need to hear sometimes. Very curious about what would happen in a season two because it seems that while she lets her daughter rule the roost she will be alone, especially as Olive grows up as she appears to be starting to do. I want more of her best friend, I wanted to know more about her and her husband and family dynamic.
I said some shit on another video about not liking her character at the beginning but ain’t that when you’re supposed to get hooked? I’m no tv exec but If the character is not likeable in the beginning people switch off... I nearly did. But really glad I didn’t. Great show.. love Ryan.. she’s a sort.
I watched it all and I still don't like her. In fact, I like her less than I did at the beginning. But the show does have a quality that makes you want to watch more. I just wish it would make me care more about some of the characters.
The show has gotten mostly mediocre to unfavorable reviews from professional critics but personally I thought there were things to enjoy in the show and definate potential for it. I definately think Ryan is a great bet for a TV offering, her talent, looks, fashion, and her unique position as a N American whose built her career and professional identity in the UK, are winning factors. I think there's some strong themes to explore in the story such as the single mother-only daughter bond and the juxtaposition of this beautiful innocent looking mother who struggles with bieng creatively destructive with her funny but cruel verbal abilities. The acting is pretty good and the Shep character is especially effective. The biggest problem is that a number of the characters choices are hugely unrealistic. (Not saying such things would never happen in the real world but truth has the luxury of bieng unbelievable and still accepted.) Ryan's character openly disrespects and demeans her boyfriend on so many dimensions that his tolerance for this despite his high self-regard undermines his credibility as a fully-fleshed persona. The idea that Katherine would continue to try to have another child - not pet ferret- but *child* with Shep after he deeply betrayed her makes no sense. Then the scene in which Ryan and her daughter are meeting with the social worker is another example, as although the daughter desperately wants a sibling and is smart enough and old enough to have sufficient self-awareness, she starts saying things that frame her mother as incredibly irresponsible. That also broke credibility. Those are some examples, but character-based structural problems like this exist throughout the whole narrative. Also Ryan's acting isn't terrible, but it is noticably wooden. Likely to the fact that she dosent have extensive acting experience, but its underscored by the fact that the rest of the acting talent, even the child actress, is pretty strong. I could still see her growing more polished as an actress by a subsequent season. I think alot of the real issues here come down to the fact that she wasn't given enough support from experienced TV fiction writers. There's alot of good material to work with that just needs to be evened out by an understanding of story and TV fiction structure. Maybe there was no possiblity of budget for a whole writing team, but Netflix could have provided at least 1 or 2 co-writers or invested script doctors. You can't just take a stand-up with no TV fiction experience and then expect her material alone to support a 500k-2mil pound/dollar TV season that goes out to an international and at this point fairly savvy audience.
That's the rub. Professional critics are never on the same page as regular people. It's kind of crazy that they even exist at all or that anybody listens to them. They never know what they are talking about. She's Canadian, btw.
@@breadfan_85 I know. N American includes the US as well as Canada. I think critics do have a role to play, but often they definately get it wrong.
