Why Emirates’ Baggage Mishandling Rate Is Up To 30x Lower Than Other Airlines

  • Baggage mishandling has been a hot topic in recent years. Many of us saw footage of bags piling up at airports across the continents while hearing stories of items ending up in completely different countries In more recent times, travellers have taken things into their own hands and tracked down their own baggage with the help of airTags and similar products.
However, this is not the standard within the aviation industry - and is more likely to take place with certain airlines and through certain airports. Proudly telling travelers that it is one of those airlines LESS likely to lose your baggage, Emirates appears to have a distinctly low number of baggage mishandling cases. Why is this?

I had a delayed flight into Dubai which meant I had 30 minutes to get off the incoming flight to my connection. I really didn’t expect my baggage to make the connection but it amazingly appeared on the baggage carousel in London. Over 15 year of flying extensively with Emirates I have never had a single baggage problem.

Emirates misplaced our bag at DXB during transfer. Bag was sent to NZ, then flown to local airport and personally delivered by a driver to our residence 2 hours from the airport. Received the bag 36 hours after arrival, impeccable service with complete transparency from emirates the whole time. We solely fly EK or EY.

Iceland Air loses so many bags not transferred from other airlines that they have a deal with a camping goods store in Reykjavik to rent outerwear to their customers for free. I know this from personal experience.

It is because of the level of automation involved in baggage handling system. Al Maktum airport is commissioned and maintained by Vanderlande industries based in the Netherlands. I am delighted to be part of the team. Some of the baggages travel 42 kms from point A to B on the conveyors.

The real reason here is that Emirates really only has one hub airport, so it is far easier to make sure that system is reliable and they can supervise it. While other airlines lines the big 3 in the US, each have a handful of hub airports all of which have different baggage handling systems and employees.

Qatar’s only hub is Doha but they still lose bags very regularly. And their customer service is abysmal…

Airline staff, airport internal facility staff, government/contracted security screening staff, and often a contracted third-party ramp ground crew handle bags. So many opportunities for someone to say "not my problem," then often lack of leadership and accountability could be the root causes for mishandled, damaged, and lost bags. Who will step up and solve the problem?

    @vashonm 3 месяца назад +5

More to do with the outsourcing of their ground service when airlines lose the bags.

Thanks Emirates for setting a standard. I would hope other carriers would aspire to meet or exceed the height of that bar.

Good to hear this as I travel in 2 weeks time through Dubai to Mauritius. 2 x flights on a 380 which is a first for me. Hope Emirates don't let me down.

The only baggage related problem on an A380 is the enormous amount of time it takes for all the bags to come out.

    • @anna-marianunezvega1520

@@SouvikMukherjeeACFCOD yeah so in my experience it helps if you arrive to the airport early, so there is enough time for the handlers to load your luggage. And I generally avoid transit times of less than 2 hours. Not just because of the luggage, but it is such a nightmare having to run from one flight to the other.

Due to the Thunderstorm in Dubai. All hell broke loose. I flew on EK to BKK. 2 checked in did not make it. It took 7 days until I got both back! in between not knowing where did the bag goes! 😅

Sounds like a good system at DXB. Sadly it's not like that at their out stations where they outsource to other providers. I would be interested to see the stats excluding DXB, probably comparable to other airlines who also outsource to the same firms EK outsources to.

1.3 per 1000 out of 2.8 million bags per month equates to 3,640 mishandled bags per month on average, yet some months no bags are mishandled at all. How does that make sense?

What you are seeing here is the benefit of vertical integration. At DBX Emirates owns the airport, the airport operations and the airlines so everything can seamlessly transition from one part to the next. It’s harder for other airlines to replicate that especially when you have so many different airline types at one airport.

Slick operation. Global aviation for sure has the gulf carriers like emirates for constantly driving expectations and standards to new highs. Best thing is they it can be done profitably

In hundreds of flights over years, I had issues with luggage 3 times:
    1. My Rimowa suitcase arrived completely open and only held together by the luggage strap I had thankfully put on (Emirates)
    2. One of two suitcases got missing and they announced my name in the cabin after landing and told me my luggage might not come. One suitcase came, the other one took almost 10 days to arrive (Emirates)
    3. We were waiting for our suitcases and were told nothing would come anymore. Filed online and the suitcases made it home before we arrived! (Lufthansa)

Haha I find this really funny, in 2016 I flew emirates when I ended up at baggage reclaim I saw my suitcase damaged with a big cut in it.

  • @nathanbessell3515

Another reason bags go missing is because of old tags please 🙏 always remove old tags. Also depending on a airport some airports all flights and all airlines go through the same system so tracking down which airline a bag belongs to sometimes can't occur until a report is filed so say you fly a 20 hour flight and lodge the report most likely depending on an airlines flight schedules that bag will travel on the same flight a whole 24 hours after you departed which means your 44 odd hours without baggage so plan ahead dont put medication or things you need like keys in your checked luggage.
Also a good way to avoid this is put your name on your bag maybe even multiple times trust me it will help.

I fly Emirates since 2004, and we never lost our bags. Qatar Airways and Lufthansa are also quite safe to travel with baggage. But with Turkish Airlines is a problem. I flew them only once, but my friends say, that they lost their bags several times with Turkish Airlines.

30 times lower (or less) is mathematical nonsense.
To say it correctly would be like "the rate is only 1/30 of other carriers"

      It depends
      Emirates loses
      1.3/1000
      but
      1.3/1000*30=39/1000 so it's not incorrect

Hi, I'm not surprised about it, Have travelled Emirates several times and not once have I ever been worried about my bags, they truely have the very best in class service in my opinion and I'm not just talking about mishandled baggage, but everything else in between, my experience has always been very positive and I will travel with them again and again. Disclaimer, please note that this comment is entirely based on my experience flying with Emirates and has nothing to do with the views and opinions of the Emirates group or affiliates.

Only Emirates put all their tags with red imprints of their trade logo, hence they can be identified uniquely across the world.
