  • Hi guys! Another busy week! I painted the last big panels for the Rover 3--Litre, more progress on our Buick 364 with Ash, and the Dean Machine joins us for another "Light Buzz" installment! I also managed to put together a new roof for the Renault 5... "Snowmobile day" finally went down, and then we're off to the GCFCE to get more work done on the 1953 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Hardtop! Also: At the CWMC store this week: Free "Dean's Greasy Flips" beer cozies with every "Same Old Shit" coffee mug!
    Our 8mm film is back from the developer; I'll be including bits of it in the next several weeks' videos... Hope you enjoy these clips; I cropped them to fit this time. Special thanks to Steve Dean and Niagra Film Labs in Toronto.

    I heard once you shouldn't run a points system without a capacitor because it will cook the points. At 19:00: A star is born!

    • @johndenton5555
      @johndenton5555 7 месяцев назад +3

      The capacitor keeps the points from pitting from the arc when they break by being connected across the points in the circuit, when the points open, the current flows through the capacitor reducing the arc flare on the points themselves. without it leaving the key on without engine running they can actually weld together and when you try to start it it usually rips one contact out then it hits the mounting to make contact until it carbons and burns that up to no longer have contact.
      Most think it is only to keep ignition noise out of the radio, which it did as a by-product until higher coil secondary voltages came out with HEI and such which also need resistive plug leads to kill noise completely for radios.😎

    My dad, grandfather and great-grandfather all worked as engineers for the Turnstedt division of General Motors in the 40's through when Turnstedt was merged into Fisher Body in 1968. I addition to clocks and instruments, Turnstedt made the door locks and....window regulators. It is a distinct possibility that my relatives had hand in the engineering of those '53 Olds window "elevators". My dad did the drawings for the '55 Chevy hardtop rear window regulators, the ones that had to move backwards a little, then swing down at the back and then level out to go straight down. Dad was with Fisher Body until it (and he) were absorbed into GM proper in the 80's.

    If you use an oscilloscope, you can see what the condenser does. When the points open, the magnetic field collapses in the coil. When this happens, the magnetic field passes back through the primary windings. This is when the condenser absorbs this energy. Now that the condenser is charged, it reenergizes the coil but not as strong as the first time. But it creates another magnetic field which collapses again, causing another but weaker pulse. This happens 4 or 5 times, each time the points open. This process absorbs the initial power surge to prevent arc from jumping across the points(like what was happening in your video) and extends the duration of the spark at the plug. It you watch on a scope, you can see the initial spark jump to around 18k volts, then you can see a squiggle afterwards. This is the condenser absorbing and reenergizing the coil.

      For a regular bench oscilloscope be sure you use a voltage divider probe to avoid frying the oscilloscope. loaned a buddy a Tektronix dual trace storage scope, said he knew how to use it, it had 3 types of probes, he used the regular 1:1 probes.
      Got my scope back from Tektronix 3 months and $2200 later. He never asked to borrow one again.

    • @johndenton5555
      @johndenton5555 7 месяцев назад +1

      After the initial break the coil 'ringing down' between point closures has very little current, it's the initial break current that fries the points. it's called 'ringing down' because the graphs starts wide and taper off to zero, like a bell sound graph diminishes after being struck.

In my model building days(1960’s), I’d heat the plastic panels and push on them in the appropriate places to create dents. Other kids I knew aimed at perfection and entered contests. I was more into realism. A red hot scribe tip into rocker panels topped with orange brown paint created rusty rocker panels

    Dan's Olds gives off an almost Autorama feeling to it, it is telling us it is special with all of it's options, or some dealer ordered it as a floor model at one time. It is so loaded with options and has such beautiful inside and outside colours . It must be a unique car with a special purpose to lure perspective buyers. I don't think it would have been respected enough to be around today otherwise. It really deserves to have the finest body /paint dude to return it to it's original brilliance, and not simply have it's "patina" clear coated. Your work comes out like glass, you have perfected the art of painting automobiles.

    After seeing the Rover in such rough shape for so long, I had lamost lost hope. Now, seeing you Scott put those coats of paint on, I see the world in a different light.It reminded me of when I used to watch Captain Kangaroo and he pushing back the veils of darkness. What a wonderful feeling!
    Dan's 53 Olds looks spectacular but it did from the very beginning. With the 53 Olds, I can see her now looking like she did when she came off the lot in the fall of ' 52. I really look forward to seeing all the different steps she still has to go through. I relish each episode bringing the girl back to showroom state. Thanks gents! Until next week! Cheers!

    Scott look under the rotor for a blue spot usually near the rivet, if you see no burn save that rotor that is the old GM delco, in later years those caps were replaced with cheap white thin plastic that were not worth shit.
    I would bet the old rotors like that are hard to get use it for best results, if it says blue streak on the points deposit them in the nearest shithole
    All GM V8s had the same condenser there will be 2 dowels with a screw hole in the middle where the condenser mounts

    The light buzz commentary is great as usual [lol]. "hey, am I driving ok "? ...hilarious. The "buzz kettle" , great name for the parts cleaner. All this reminds me of back in the 70's working in my buddies garage throwing in junkyard motors and trying to get them to run right .

    I was going to send you an ultrasonic cleaner in my next load. Kudos to the guy who beat me to it. I have used mine with some mild rust remover (although not recommended). I've been saving hardware for about 40 years and it has done amazingly well cleaning everything. Rust accumulated from sitting so long. I've got everything back to as-new condition. I went to the dollar store and found some smaller baskets in the cooking utensil section with finer screen mesh. It works great. The sound of the thing is something to avoid with a hangover - that's for sure. Glad you are already putting the parts I sent to good use. The early 4 barrel carbs (like my 283 4-Jet) have the exhaust gas heater that goes to the base of the carb. Most people will block that off at the manifold or at the carb to avoid the risk of fire.

    Going through some stuff and found I got my drivers license in November of 1968 at 68 1/2 in Massachusetts the earliest you could get it with Drivers education. My father assigned me the 68 Lincoln 4 door convertible. Too big and powerful for a first car. Enough historical rambling. Best to all the agents, and Ms. Frankers.

      Same year that I got mine in Portland, Maine. 1961 Ford Fairlaine, an old Air Force decommissioned Ford in blueish gray color, three on the tree. Blew my first parallel park (too far from curb by two inches), but I nailed it the second time. Thanks for the memories.
