Saved From the Crusher! 1961 Plymouth Belvedere Hardtop V8 Coupe!

  • Looks like another Plymouth joins the fleet! Very excited; now I have all the 2-door hardtops from 1957-1961, my favorite years, from the best of the Exner-era at Chrysler. I do have a 1961 Belvedere sedan, but I always wanted the hardtop, as it really does look a lot nicer, although maybe not yet in this particular case, haha!
This one came from a farm auction about an hour from home... I wasn't even there, but a couple of the Agents were, and they bought it for me! So cool of them, for sure! It was going to the scrap trailer if they hadn't, so I was stoked to get the car for basically scrap money, and it'll be saved now!
More soon on this sweetie... Leave us a "like" if you want to see us try to get her to run!
Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments! We do appreciate that anyone would take the time to leave us a note. If you would like to help keep our channel going, you can get a sticker or a hat or a coffee mug at:

Wow another plymouth! Its in pretty deplorable condition. Thats why i love this show so much. You take cars that no one would ever dream of fixing, and make them live again. Yes you need indoor parking space. A museum of autos. Thats what you should build, an automotive museum. Hi frankers. I bet it will run. Crazy looking taillights, some wild chrome. A real beauty in its day! revved up yooper

Far out score, Scott. I drove a '61 Savoy, slant six, three on the tree for years, so I'm looking forward to see what you do with this one. It could be a Fury with some help, eh? What if a guy had a Fury from each of the golden years? Would that be an ultimate, or what? Just thinkin'...

Cold War motors My dad was an avid watcher of your show. He passed away a month ago. He also was a mechanic from back in the day aka gear head 😁Your show reminded him of when he built his old cars out of nothing. He admired your Ingenuity because always thought of some how to fix your cars that he thought might not work. But you always have. Thank you so much for being here on RUclips for my dad to find you.

8:45 "Not very Impressed with how things have went"? I am very impressed! I would've counted my many blessings so far. You had friends watching out for you; you made it there in one piece, towing a trailer; you had a working jack, a working electric impact; lubricant spray; no rain etc. I have to laugh my ass off thinking how many of these excursions may not have gone so well for you, and today you're squawking about a non-concours fitment of the wheel and tire combo. We've reached the age where we have learned a thing or two or three and we deserve to revel in these minor successes. I am impressed that you brought an impact wrench a jack a spare tire spray lubricant spray those are things that you've probably forgotten in the past and learned not to forget in the future haha. This was a great vid and i cant finish watching the whole thing right now, but ill be back.

Back when the 1961's came out they weren't very popular because of the styling. My dad waited until the down sized 62's came out and bought a new base Belvedere with the slant six and automatic transmission. He traded in the 1956 Dodge Sierra station wagon with the 315 Hemi Red Ram V8 that he always said took too much gas but us kids liked it for going on trips because we could stretch out & sleep in the back because dad liked to drive at night.

If you can get that to run.............I love the shape of the steering wheels on those cars.....and where the rear view mirror is placed. Adds so much character! Sweet gem...it breaks my heart to see cars like this just get neglected over the years to rot in fields....but if anyone can bring some life back to it, it's you Scott!

When I was a kid, my sister used to babysit, and occasionally brought home some old toys for me, her rotten baby brother. One day she arrived with this large old Japanese made tin plate toy car. You guessed it, a 1961 Plymouth two-door hardtop. It was way different than my usual early '80's HotWheels, and I loved playing with it. Still sitting on the bookshelf to this day! Hope you can save that full-size version!

Oh wow. Love your work and vision for these old cars I am in Australia but grew up in New Zealand. You saw a Vauxhall Cresta where you bought the 61 Belvedere , wish you had shown it on the video as these are now super rare. When I was a kid they were quite common. I drove Vauxhall Velox for a number of years. They are the same as a Cresta , but the base version. I had a PA ,PB and a PC model. Which was the one you saw I have to say I was surprised you even knew what it was as I don’t think many were sold in Canada or USA. I am a mechanic and have been for forty years so had a really good grounding in the old ways of being a mechanic , IE , I fix things instead of just replace and also have a good field of experience in the modern world of cars. Keep up the good work. Love your videos

My college roomate had a 65 Belevedere. I made a first rate lower fender section for the rusted fender he didn't replace. He swapped a quarter from Fit Rite, where between their fit and his skills there was a huge seam welded relief cut he made above the wheel well center, to make it fit. A good gallon of well leveled filler made it look respectable. The Belvedere emblem on one side was missing the B and the e, so his friends called it the L-vedere. Eventually it got a 383 4-speed swap, and ran pretty well.

Just watched this video. I had forgotten how rough this was when you got it, compared to how it looks now. It still amazes me how bizarre the Plymouth styling was in 1961. It's grown on me as a classic look back. I was 11 years old when this was new, and I remember the 1961 Chevrolet was the first model year car that I was aware of, or paid attention to. I'd love to see this Plymouth restored. 👍

I appreciate a man who gets his hands dirty and greasy. Those stud bolts are a pain though.

hi scott, thanks again for sharing your rich world of coldwarmotors.im very envious of your environment of farm auctions and community which continually throw up to discerning green-fingered gentleman such gems as this car,and you pay SCRAP metal value !!!!! in my community every piece of rusty americana of any ethnicity has long since been worked over,i only ever see fully restored examples, and very very few of them.we mostly only recieved plain four-door base-model stuff here as like canada our community bought british to help the old country recover from WW2.Only the very wealthy here saw this brand.today if i see a Fury like your project,or a 2-dr coupe like this,it will usually be a recent l/h drive import.my current shed stuffing is a NZ new govt purchase 46 ford club coupe and a project v8 trike from all 35-6 Ford original parts and a hybrid Harley/Indian front end,the trike has the rear tub from a 35 tourer body.keep up the good work,i so love the Fury.Christchurch New Zealand

That should have been a beautiful car when new and it's a nice find nonetheless. Have a good one!

Those taillight pods are seriously chromed! You got the torque just right on those wheel bearings. I hate to see the windows broken that way. Brushing Franker's fur must have been a big job.

    Holy Moly!
Not sure why, but this episode popped back up on my RUclips feed tonight(It may well have been the first CWM episode I ever watched 3 years ago).
For giggles, I clicked to watch again and was stunned to be greeted by a seemingly 30 year younger Scott. Lol what a difference!
Even though I watch every episode, the subtle weekly beard-creep has evidently been stealthily feathered in.
    lol!
    Love the channel!
