    From what I understand, TWS doesn't allow you to hard lock onto friendlies, so that's one way around it not having IFF. However, if you attempt to hard lock an aircraft and it works, well on one hand you know it's an enemy, but on the other their RWR will go off.

      No you can still lock on to them however friendlies will have a line on top of their radar blip

    some tips for playing bvr: as everyone else has mentioned, tws is your friend, the extra delay to them knowing theyve been fired upon drastically increases the missiles potential. though note that at closer ranges just lock them in any method, tws is only really for the long range surprise shots
    also always try to be supersonic when using aim 7 or 54, they turn better and go farther when you are.
    if you ever have a concern that the enemy may fire back in bvr(ie phantoms and 23s), fire your missile and then turn so that the enemy is on the outer edge of the radar screen, as it closes the distance between your planes slower, and makes it harder for their missile.
    if you arent under pressure try to get them about halfway into your missiles range, and if the enemy maneuvers always fire a follow up missile when they stop maneuvering.
    in a bvr fight at closer ranges, fire the phoenix and then just run away for a few seconds, because they have to defend the pitbull, and when they do that they arent going to be able to fire back, allowing you to freely turn back in and lob another while theyre already defensive.
    also dont be afraid to spend over half your phoenixes on one enemy, as youve observed they weigh you down a lot, and vs fighters theyre a highly effective deterrent, but worthless in close range fights, ideally you never get a dogfight until youve spent the phoenixes
    of course in a war thunder environment where the tomcat was artificially weakened and still completely stomps everything(when not laden with missiles), you dont really need these tips to succeed, but overkill is the best kind of kill.

      Honestly BVR doesn't really work in war thunder due to notching being WAY too effective and chaff and flares being a get out of jail free card at the press of a button. You're better off just flying either really high and using your fox 1s from about 4-6km or flying really low and using fox 2s with no radar on at all or using the IRST on the Mig23. PD in sim seems to work a lot less effectively than Air RB as well, which exasperates the issue.

    Gaijin incorrectly modelled the f14 radar to make it balanced at least for now, in reality TWS does have IFF, there should be 2 screens in the F14 and the bottom one would have a feature where it shows you a bird's eye view of what the radar can see, when you fire a phoenix a countdown appears, when it gets to about 20 seconds to target it goes Pitbull but it can go Pitbull at any time since it's controlled by the Rio. Unfortunately this is not in war thunder because gaijin but I guess if you want realism DCS has an amazing tomcat.

    Meanwhile Im just 80k RP in on the research - that will take a while. Nice video Toast :)
    Btw about that Draken: He managed his speed or used dampening mode in the beginning (and switched it off in the end). They only fall out of the sky when they overpull. Since you in the 14 couldnt turn as hard anyway, he just managed to stay in the air.

    ive spent a decent amount of time in my f14 in sim.....and i will say this ive been out right hunted by opposing players that how well ive been doing in it
    it is just a dream to fly and it is so much damn fun to yeet sparrows at range

    The fact that war thunder incorrectly models delta wings as amazing ratefighters infuriates me. Just check out the J-7E, it's stupidly good in a two circle for no reason.
    Meanwhile, the Mirage III underperforms in the one circle AND two circle

      double delta makes it a better ratefighter how exactly? Afaik delta wings literally inherently prevented this without proper power to accommodate. The draken is a double delta, and even though it's tailless it dumps more speed than anything ingame. Im not saying the J-7 should be nerfed, im saying it just doesn't compute

    At the beginning that Viggen was effectively notching you, that’s why he kept falling off of your radar. When that happens switch off the pulse doppler mode and unless they’re close to ground level they should pop back up.

    Well... they would normally keep in a formation flight of each other but if say there were more than one flight of aircraft or other flights in the area in general, they'd probably have an E2 Hawkeye flying around constantly relaying information to all allied flights. This is to ensure no friendly firing happens and that every allied aircraft is aware of their surroundings and taking into account the known location of friendly sightings via coordinates and headings as well as possible bogeys/bandits. In later models of the F-14 starting from the F-14 Late, TCS [Television Camera set] systems were added to give the pilots a visual look at what they are locked on to. This made it possible for the tomcat crew to work independently and efficiently in the identification of a target. The radar was capable of slaving this camera system and would display its video feed in place of the VDI [Vertical Display Indicator] system. If you don't know what the VDI system is, it's your primary attitude indicator and can recreate everything the HUD displays but does it better. However this does not mean VDI is not entirely pointless, it has an important role but I won't get into it in this comment. Anyways the TCS system will display on the same screen as the VDI system and shows the target from miles out depending on its size and relays information in the form of a grayish silhouette of the target in front to the pilot visually for them to make the judgment call if the bogey is a friendly or a bandit aircraft.

      @@CptToastman No problem, just thought you'd like the clarification and/or bit of knowledge. I'm actually looking forward to when we'll be seeing the F-14 late and beyond models that feature the TCS system as it would be a game-changer for Sim. It would improve the chance of a scored kill on the correct target and will hopefully help avoid friendly firing incidents from happening as common as they are. Although with this technology I wouldn't know exactly how they could implement it while still making it balanced for all other nations. Perhaps they will have to start adding E-2s and E-3s for allied nations as well as A-50s for axis nations that would provide information to all friendly pilots. Although I'm sure it's not as easy doing it as just saying it out loud to make that happen.

    switch to TWS, and bind keys to switch between the targets that pop up. you dont need a hard lock to fire phoenixes so you can fire multiple AIM54s
    even planes popping up on the TWS radar does alert RWR so be wary of that
    phoenixes do start tracking on their own once they get within 15 km or 9-10 miles, but they will seek the first thing they see hence why you got one of the other AIs
    for rate fighting, i'd suggest turning wing sweep manual and opening up the wings completely. When its on auto, warthunder tends to keep wing sweep in the middle unless youre going very fast or very slow, just as with the floggers.

    You should be able to run 4 missiles in the middle depending on if I want to be more standoff or close in I prefer to run 4 54, 2 7F, 2 9H or 4 7F, 2 54, 2 9H

    The optimum rate speed of the f14 is definitely faster than you were fighting the draken. Also 2 circle is a rate fight and 1 circle is radius.

    Im not quite sure if this is implemented yet... BUT if you fire a Missile in TWS the enemy wont get a RWR warning until the missile goes active (uses its own radar) which gives them WAY less time to react thus improving the chance of a kill

    They really need to overhaul the visuals. U can't see far range cos it goes white, the default postfx has this grey filter which makes it impossible to see anything past 5km on a hazy map. Additionally, impossible to see anything on the deck of Afghanistan or anything flying near water. Additionally, stuff in the sky you'll only see within 4km of range, its really really broken.

      I just press the "view" button to scroll through the camera angles, one of them is a chase camera. Also, there is a random camera view on the top of the screen.

    At high AoA, does one roll with lateral stick or with rudder in the F-14 in WT? curious on wether they implemented that, also, wha'ts the point of having that line moving across not even just the HUD, but the whole canopy paralel to the horizon? I assume it's the radar antenna, but why? seems super annoying to me

      I think that line is a bug matey. I probably use rudder and stick for the roll but I can't remember, my feet tend to do there own thing.

      Was wondering because at high AoA, in the Tomcat, if you tried to use stick to roll in a direction, because of drag, outside side of intended roll would have way more drag, yawing to the opposite direction, making the wing on the side of the intended roll create more lift actually, so that you'd find yourself rolling in the opposite direction to the intended one, that's why you'd roll with the rudders instead

      Yeah in game it only lets you lock on to enemies but it still doesn't identify them.

      I think it happens when you are in the TWS radar mode. It should be automatic. You used to be able to see the green squares all over the screen but Gaijin removed them and you can only see them through the HUD now.

    In real life no mode with tell you friend or foe on the radar thats what the TID is for, you have to lock them and get your RIO to IFF for you if friendly it will come up with a black box and if foe it will be a black line from left to right of the DDD

    You need to shoot phoenixes in TWR mode without hard lock. Than you wont give lock to the enemy. This will not work with sparrows

    It doesn’t seem the f-14 is modelled correctly the acceleration seems too slow and it doesn’t pull some of tgr AOA that it’s well capable of

    hey. your AIM 54 are not working becouse your locking your radar on the target, you just need to lett TWS mark it then RED lock missile and fire.. you can have a key bind to switch TWS target to track, or manualy select on radar. but do not lock radar and attempt to lock the aim 54. when you lock, you switch radar mode, and aim 54 do not work in the other radar modes. only TWS.:) i get plenty of kills with the aim 54 so they are usefull. and you can lunch your aim-54 fine at 30-40 KM out i think it was.
    i love the f14. was dream in war thunder for it to come.:D

      @@nightcorefree4911 well his didn not work. pluss he fired them whitout a red lock... i tried whitout TWS and they work like dog crap then. Aim 54 is made for TWS and fast multi targeting...

      @@CptToastman i have not gotten them to work propperly whit normal target lock. but for the missiles to work properly or on multiple targets you need to keep the targets whitin the radar frame until the missiles reach pitbull mode. the missiles are made spesificaly for TWS. target lock is more for sparrows. and wy woud you notify the enemy that you have locked them and what direction you are, when you have TWS.xD in TWS you can add a keybind to switch targets your TWS are targeting so its easyer to fire on multiple targets once. and for most effective AIM-54 it's bether to be hig than low so the missiles can get speed and fly longer distances.:)

    You should learn to use the Radar before going into a sim battle. For one instead of using TWS where your radar would target enemy’s and have them stand out for you as well as show you who’s friendly or foe would’ve helped you plenty. Not only that while you were in base search PD you didn’t change your scope at all, which would’ve made it easier to pick up targets as well. Btw TWS is the radar mode that doesn’t alert enemies when you track them.

    My guy, the in game voice chat can only be heard by your squad, if they even have it enabled, not the whole team, so you saying "check six" every video before typing it does nothing.
