The MOST COMMON problem with transmission, from what I know, is:
1. That they are NOT SERVICED. People do NOT replace the fluid. Check the fluid level and replace the fluid ever 100,000 miles (50,000 in severe conditions).
2. The radiator fails internally, it will sometimes allow coolant to transfer into the transmission. To verify is this is happening, check the fluid. If it is NOT red but BROWN, you likely have this problem. STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY and replace the radiator. Then change the fluid in the transmission.
3. The PNP switch. When this goes bad, you will almost ALWAYS see the lights at the performance buttons flashing. It will often STOP the car from starting.
+Robert DIY Hello Robert, thanks for repling to my video. I really apreciate your help. A month ago I check the fluid level on my trany It was a little low, but does not looks brown, it was red. I add more fluid but nothing seems to change. Also I perform a scan with the onboard scanner inside the engine and Im gettting 232 code: Spedometer Signal Missing. Any ideas? Thanks so much. Grettings from Chile.
No, I don't. Sorry to see you are having these issues. Sometimes they just give up.
+Robert DIY Thanks anyway for your help Robert. I learn a lot of my Volvo with your videos.
Thanks for watching.
i have this problem in my volvo 960 3.0 1992 ( The select lights flashing all The time) what can i do?
Maybe you solved your problem. But for all others:
Simply change your gear selection switch (pnp(?)) located on the right side of the transmission. Had exactly the same problem with D starting in 3rd gear (winter/failsafe mode). Sometimes a defective switch does not switch on the reverse light, that´s an indicator for a not proper working pnp switch. In some cases you get an error code from the gearbox ECU and the shift up light flashes, which can be read out.
Sometimes I had an error code, sometimes the reverse light failed, sometimes the overdrive-clutch did not engage (don´t drive in that case, your trans-fluid will overheat).
Workaround if you are on the road: park your 960/S90, switch off ignition, switch thru all drive stages several times and start again. Than everything should work as it should… until next time.
The reason is that the exhaust pipe is too close to the switch, the integrated lubrication gets too hot and thus ages quickly. As a result, the contacts wear out faster.
It´s the starter inhibitor switch,Volvo p/n 3515639-7.Located on the right side of the gearbox..if the mode selector buttons flash and you see a yellow arrow on the dashboard..or if you loose the reverse light.or if the gearbox enters "limp home mode" (starting in third gear, switching to fourth but w/o lockup),the switch needs to be replaced. It´s tricky and requires that the exhaust system be removed and the oil lines connected to the gearbox from the radiator, also be taken down before you can remove and replace the switch.
What was the conclusion that you eventually came to?
Hi, Ok it's been 7 seven years ago, but could you have solved this transmission problem?
Thanks for sharing 😊!
What was the fix?
Its your pnp switch

always use volvo automatic in sport mode.
why ?
@@yigitgnc why do you need winter mode? Learn to drive. Volvo mechanic ones said always sport mode, gearbox lasts longer
@@jotski10 I just asked a simple question why should I drive it in sport mode, why would I want it to change gears at higher rpms ? actualy torque convertors must deal with bigger oil pressure in sport mode... so I am pretty sure that I drive well especially when I do lap records in local tracks...
Also wtf dude... there is nothing about winter mode in my question...
If you can not answer my question with technical details its ok to shut your mouth...
@@yigitgnc well here in Finland people dont use automatik gearboxes in track cars. Here automatic transmission have only s or w mode. Dont know how it is were u live?
@@jotski10 I drive 6 speed manuel genessis in track. but my daily is c180 amg 9gtronic it has lots of mode which effects transmisson like eco comfort sport+ also volvo 960 has eco mode too which is obviosly better for transmisson life by changing gears earlier than sport mode. Now I understood what u were talking about. where I live there is usally three mods for automatic transmissions eco, sport, winter. sorry if I was rude in previous comment.
