I'm a classical player who can handle concertos but I'm intimidated by jazz. This is exceptional, and really helpful. Thanks.

As a brazilian I must say its a pretty accurate video :D. But its good to add that is a "fast bossa", which uses a more "samba" bassline, the "slow bossa" (which is the one we reffer when we say "bossa nova") has a less rhytmic bassline (the syncopation of the right hand remains the same in both styles). But wonderful job!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment Jonas! I love reading it. I remember when I first got into jazz. I was so inspired but had to find out where to look for information by myself, there was no one I knew when I first started who could show me the way. Really glad my videos are there for you!
Thanks for the swift reply and the perfect answer/link to my question. People like you, who give up their time & skill freely, is what makes youtube such a pleasure. Thanks again. Kevin
Thanks so much Scott - I'm really pleased this video made a great first impression, and I appreciate this lovely comment. Please make yourself at home!
I am an aspiring jazz piano player and have been really frustrated at how to go about it. Till I came across your videos. Now I am more confident after knowing and learning that there is a pattern to follow. What a great teacher you are. Thank you so much!
Hey PlanBeatz - yeah that's a modulation (key change). It's subtle - pop music used to do this a lot more in the old days. Recently everything seems to stick to one key. I've been listening to the Police a lot lately - they have a good amount of modulation. Just like the song you sent me - they do it subtly. One of my favorite ways to change key is if you're in C minor, you can modulate to the key of F minor: Play a C minor chord, then go to Db major chord, then to F minor. Now you're in F minor
I've been playing for about 2 years and was wondering how to do this! Your videos are super helpful, and I'm finding answers to things that are frustrating me even through your comments. Thanks a million!
The longer videos are great! These concepts take time and shouldn't be rushed. Thanks again for the great work and bringing the jazz musician's community a little closer together.
Thanks so much Chris, this comment really resonates with me. I've seen that pretentious attitude all my time studying music, and it really gets in the way. Loved waking up to this comment, really pleased the video helped :) p.s. yes the Slow Hot Wind and Song for my Father are favorites of mine too!
First time I've watched one of your videos, and I'm very impressed. Clear, simple, straightforward, professional, and direct. Very humble, yet confident and certain at the same time. You're just here to give of your knowledge, and that's wonderful. The graphics were clear, well timed, and enhanced the education. Thank you. I'll absolutely be tuning back for morre
Hi. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.. You are the BEST teacher. I can't wait to buy the ebook..You are amazing..All I needed are in your videos. Thx so much. God bless.
Nice! Thanks for the question Kurt. I would play LH bassline and RH chords when playing with a singer, or another instrument that is playing the melody or a solo. It's a good texture to accompany another player with, especially if you have no bass player. But playing this pattern solo piano will get boring fairly quickly.
Thank you for the video. I will use the advice and practice bossa over jazz standards. Right now I happen to be working on Invitation and Lets Fall In Love. I also have Misty at the piano so I will pull that one out again.
I'm meant to be learning 'Blue Bossa' this week, and I was lucky to find this. I had worked out some voicings but your video really helped me nail the rhythm.
Worth the wait. Again another terrific tutorial. I was quite thrilled to hear a little Henry Mancini and Horace Silver thrown in the mix. The stuff you do is so insightful and set out in such an unpretentious manner, it can only be marveled at.
That c minor 9th then to c major 9 goes right through me. Does music affect everyone with an emotional "tangebility"? Some chord progressions rock my world! I hope everyone feels music like I do. I can almost see it!
Great lesson man, I simply adore you lessons. But in fact back here in Brazil, most of the bossa nova is wrote in 2/4. They just adapted it into 4/4 because 2/4 is not usual worldwide.
My favorite Cole Porter songs to play in the Bossa Nova style is Begin the Beguine and Night and Day. I combine these into a medley with Gershwin's Summertime and it works really great! Try it and see how you like that combination.
If you are playing with a bass player are you going to play it the same? What does he play if you are playing one and five? Are you going to double? I know Horace Silver did but many modern bass players don't want you to.
This is super, the Root 5 in the Bass and simple chords in the right hand - now I know what Bill Evans was referring to when he spoke of 2 note chords, less is MORE
Great videos! Been studying and playing drums and percussion for years, and had a few stutter-starts at vibraphone (never quite getting up to speed with it, sad to say.) My daughter recently began piano with a teacher with a jazz background, and I'm feeling like it's good for me to understand more music theory. Thank you so much.
thanks for giving up your time, this has been really helpful. please can you give any tips in how to stop one hand dominating the other when playing the rhythm. thanks again.
I was wondering if you could do a bit of a talk about Tango piano. I don't know much about it; only that the melodies seem to be made in a similar manner as in Bossa Nova, and that chromatic runs are common. I would love it if you could do a video on that, because Tango seems like a fun genre, especially since a person could probably play around with some really jazzy chords in it.
Question: Sometimes you are playing a bass line in the LH and chords in the RH. How often would this actually be the case when performing? What I mean is, if you are soloing or even playing the head, when would you do that? Thanks, really love your videos. I'm finally able to watch them *at* the piano, too.
Loved this tutorial, it's so clear specially the subtitles so i can find the part i wanted easily again. But it would be nice to have some mindless drone exercises to get this into hands .. i cannot figure out how to do transitions between different chords in a smooth way
You're welcome Kevin! It took me several years to work out how to play that Diamonds are Forever riff. I even bought the soundtrack, and slowed it down to half-speed! I wish the piano played more on that track, but it only plays the intro. I should find out who the pianist was. Here's the original cue: youtube . com/watch?v=upAsP44bG_c
You are a great teacher! Thank you for all the details you are adding here, which is what makes an authentic sound. Question: Did you program the drum track you are using here? Any chance you can put it as a MIDI file so we can download it. Thank you again!!
Great exposition of the various subjects you treat. Do you play studio work or are you active in the jazz scene as a player/composer? Love your approach.
Brilliant video. One question -completely off topic - at 50 secs into the video, just before the lesson begins there is a wonderful 'late night' piece of jazz and a fascinating dissonant run of notes. You couldn't explain what that is and how it is played, could you? Many thanks. Kevin
I have some videos on rhythm coming soon - none yet posted unfortunately. Here's the thing - for something to become ingrained in your muscle memory and for you to be able to do something without thinking about it - you have to go through the motion 2000 times (practice it 2000x). So if you play the bassline pattern 2000 times (hopefully a bit less!) then you should be able to start adding the right hand, and have the left hand keep playing the same thing that you've ingrained into it.
Great tutorial thanks..I especially like your tune "Night at the Lounge" Must say I've already managed to figure out alot of the stuff -- voicing rhythms etc --.from this tutorial on my own, and I've only had my 2nd handYamaha PSR-330 since around May this year, so I'm mighty chuffed😊 Figured out how to play Jobim's 'Desafinado' today in fact and sing at the same time..😊 Very grateful for your succinct tutorials which saved me a lot of messing around on my own ( especially the ii-V-I Tutorial) . Playing piano is turning out to be alot easier than I thought , especially after surmounting the initial hurdles of the learning curve and technical issues...Thanks again.☺ Suggestion: Making a video for playing Brazilian Samba (which I've already figured out by myself btw..comes in handy when you already play guitar -- kind of like cheating a bit! lol) which is a lot of fun to play and somewhat different to Bossa Nova!
Great video, although I do miss the bass going on from I to V. Especially without rhythm section. Then it sound a bit empty. But I guess it is to difficult to combine all three elements all the time, I mean bass, chords and melody. Nice to mention is the bossa nova clave which you can hear in the rhythm of the chords. I wish you all the best.
In your example you're playing the melody in 3rds and 6ths. Do you have a tutorial on this technique? I think a lot of people would be intereted in this! Because I only play single notes in the melody but I know there are people who play with triads in the melody or like you in 3rds and 6ths. Perhaps you could help us! By the way, thanks for all your videos, some of them helped me a lot!!!

Thanks Ka! Glad you appreciate the audio production I do on the audio, that alone takes hours.
+jazztutorial Yes this is the best tutorial on RUclips!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment Jonas! I love reading it. I remember when I first got into jazz. I was so inspired but had to find out where to look for information by myself, there was no one I knew when I first started who could show me the way. Really glad my videos are there for you!
You're welcome Paulo! I never thought I'd find myself teaching Brazilian's how to play bossa novas!
Glad this one helped you!
Julian
Thanks Pelforth! I appreciate the positive feedback as always - glad this helped!
That bassline would groove so well on a contrabass
Thanks for the swift reply and the perfect answer/link to my question.

Best jazz teaching channel I've come across on youtube
Oh and it's lovely if you can ever play bossa nova piano with a singer - I agree. That's one of my favorite settings!
Awesome chords my friend ❤ play more😊

This is one of the best music theory channels on youtube. I thank you for dedicating your time that I'd have otherwise payed for.

The best tutorial on bossa nova on youtube
Thanks Duane - great to hear this. I try to make them the length I think they need to be - glad this length works for you :)

Thanks Kypiano! Glad you are learning from these videos, just uploading a new one now :)
I love playing the Cole Porter and George Gershwin compositions in the Bossa Nova style! Your ideas are awesome!
Congratulations Here in Brazil videos is rare as rich in content as his!!
Thanks!!!!
Excellent Brady! I'm composing a bossa nova jingle and I was wandering how to play the rhythm on piano!!! Thanks man! I love all your videos!
the length is just fine. I appreciate this a lot man.
Thanks Felix, so glad you enjoyed this :)
Thank you for the video. I will use the advice and practice bossa over jazz standards. Right now I happen to be working on Invitation and Lets Fall In Love. I also have Misty at the piano so I will pull that one out again.
Hi Marcus - that is a VST - it's the steinway piano sound in Logic - using the exs24 sampler. It comes free with Logic :)
I'm meant to be learning 'Blue Bossa' this week, and I was lucky to find this. I had worked out some voicings but your video really helped me nail the rhythm.
Great lesson. Speaking of left hand bass lines, some of us are still waiting for your video addressing "WALKING BASS LINES."
Julien the man is here when I need him. A video from 2013 helps me now in 2019 writing my own song. Looking forward to you next mail you'll send me =D
A very useful tutorial, thank you. And your bossa is really cool.

Agreed. Your channlel and videos are some of the best in youtube. Thanks pal.
Thanks Bruce - those are all excellent choices to play as bossa nova's, I especially love Invitation - one of my favorites :)
My favorite Cole Porter songs to play in the Bossa Nova style is Begin the Beguine and Night and Day. I combine these into a medley with Gershwin's Summertime and it works really great! Try it and see how you like that combination.
