A quick lesson on the classic beat from "Cissy Strut" by The Funky Meters.
How To Drum - How To Play "Cissy Strut" - The Meters #StephenTaylor #BestDrumLessons
You're a fantastic teacher - my 8yo son learned this today and played it for his drum teacher. His teacher was impressed, and showed him how to play with the rhythm. Thanks!!
Great lesson video man. I am from New Orleans and also play bass with Zigaboo in the Bay Area. He is truly a master.
Not a big RUclipsr, but a drummer and USM Alumni. Ironically, I also handle all of Ziggy's PR and Marketing. This year marks 45 years since the release of The Cissy Strut. Thanks for doing it justice!
Nice to see another USM alum on here! Thanks so much for the kind words
One of my favorite grooves. I picked it up by ear, using 1 hand on hats. I saw he used 2, and it really came alive to me. A great groove to sound check to, as ya gotta be relaxed to make it sound good. He raises the hats on the ah of 2 ever so dirty
By far the best demo of Cissy Strut I've seen on youtube - or anywhere. Helped me actually learn a groove which has eluded me for ages. Totally dig the presentation - beat explanation, humor, etc. You're a great teacher!
Right on.....That was a great lesson......your snare drums sounds incredible.
your a champion for putting this up!!! hands down raddest groove of all time!
awesome groove, great lesson. can't wait to get home and learn it. would you consider doing a lesson for the bridge/part B of the song? Thanks Stephen, you rock!
my drumming is improving after i watch every single one of your videos :o
these lessons are the best i have found on youtube so far!!!
Thanks man! This is a song I've always loved but never really studied. It showed up on a set list for a gig I got hired for and this helps a ton.
I have played this groove, but i used one hand on the hi-hats and the other on the snare...i got if down pat...i was only about 13/14 yearz old...i had a little band and since i could play all the instruments i had to teach everyone what to play...real talk...im now a music teacher
Great sounding groove man, theres sooo many different ways to play this.I like to play off beatt 8th notes with the right hand whilst throwin in the odd 16th with the left hand. When ive seen Zig do it he kind of plays hand to hand 16ths missing out certain notes and accenting others.Every "known" drummer you see doing it have there own way too.
This is great! Very easy to understand. Thanks!
Very handy video man. I gotta play this tomorrow so you saved me a bunch of time!
Thanks saves me having to figure this out !
It's my favorite version too. The whole band is killin' it ! ! ! Someone comented that the band is called Big Bang and is from Norway.
great video no nonsense 😃
you're becoming a better and better educator by every video :)
you have my full support :)
Dimitrij
had to write this out for my college lessons last year. along with look-a-py-py
You explained it so well! New Orleans style music just has so much go
Thank you! Great explanation. Can't wait to get stuck into this.
thanks for the lesson man! you broke it down well thanks again
excellent tutorial! thanks!
Ziggy would b proud Stephen welldone
Excellent!
The only thing I found was it helps to approach it more as if you were playing 16th notes on the hi-hat and hitting the snare with the right hand (if right handed), and just leave some notes out, only accenting the correct notes. By stacking the hi-hat (left hand) on top of the snare (right hand), it gives it a more loose open handed feel, though I sometimes like to leave the snare on 2 by itself. You sound great though, and got the right swampy feel... I was just describing how zig does it.
Awesome!
Very cool!! Sent to my friends drummers!!
Nice I'm subscribing...love the dry sense of humor.
Dude you're hilarious. And a killer drummer.
Can you maybe drop a second lesson on the bridges? This one was damn helpful tho...thanks
Nice!!!
nice job thanx
Thank you!
I want to join your crew but i'm not into giving out cc info. What is my alternative? Check out the groove on Time is Free by Aquarium Rescue Unit...Jeff Sype with triplet sickness..if you want.
feel really funny smacking on my desk over and over again trying to figure this one out haha
is this between 8th notes and triplets?
I love that voice you do XD seems like almost every black stereotype rolled into one accent!
russell baptise is a bad ass...daddy backbeat for sure.
this is an awesome beat, i've never heard the song before tho.
when you demonstrated what it would sound like straight it sounded horrible! but for the life of me i do not know what you mean when you tell me to swing it... does it just mean play looser? haha i have no clue man
He does two distinct grooves in that tune. You should put up a followup lesson on that other groove.
Ear candy...lol. Good stuff, thanks man. :)
I love your voice.
awsum stuff bro (o:
Wow now I can play this groove correctly for once lol
Great VID! You kinda favor Justin Timberlake's older brother!
Does RUclips have a rule against teaching the "B" section of this song?
go to :11
Groove ( sorry for 2 posts... Damn Mobile)
This feel ey... I'm thinking this has a sextuplet feel, explaining that special vibe of this groove?
Ta-tada-taDa-tada-taDa-tada-taDa-tada-taDa (read this out loud, fast. Each capital letter symbolises a quarter note.)
thank you so fucking much
Same Here!! Lol
and then in the choruses.....
That awkward moment when we got this song in Jazz band today...
close but not the groove
I agree. ... there's something missing.
I have been practicing this and it sounds so bad I think I am giving myself ear cancer
I like your videos a lot Stephen, but this is the groove - ruclips.net/video/I4EyEQqDLDY/видео.html - right around :28
the title should have been how to play cissy strut in a sloppy way
Have you ever listened to that song? Nothing about new orleans drumming is clean. Totally respect if you don't like the presentation though. Thanks for watching!
wrong swing. wrong sticking = wrong video. sorry bro, but if you gonna dance with the groove masters, do it right, or dont do it at all.
WRONG.
I love your videos, but this lesson never ever groove!
It sounds like the german army march! Terrible! By the way , Im a german.
Sorry Stephen but that is not Cissy strut, that is bullshit!!
