Ace, SRV, Keith Richards, Paul Kossof, Angus, Leslie West, B.B.....none are technically advanced players.
But how do you compare the soul and rockin out grooves these masters kick out, or have kicked out for decades?

Part of the problem is you had to of grown up listening in that period. Ace sounds like Ace, when you play Ace's music he doesn't sound like anyone else. I didn't appreciate Ace really till he did his KISS solo album, he has his own sound, his own vocals. It's like everyone that grew up listening to Eddie, they will all say Eddie is god on guitar and he is, but then came Steve Vai, and everyone is WOW a new god in town. Ace is ACE .. he doesn't sound like anyone else, you can beat up his guitar playing all you want but his sound is his and I'm glad that's why I buy his music. It's ACE.... When I was a little kid, I thought Ace was the greatest guitarist in the world. Then I studied guitar and found out that what Ace was doing was pretty easy - I kinda turned my back on him and other guitarists from that era. I studied all the theory and tried to emulate many of the “accomplished players”. The music I played was dry and pretentious. People would fall asleep listening to me play. Then one day I grew up. I realized music 🎵 was meant to inspire and motivate people - it’s not about who knows the most scales and who can play the fastest. So, I went back to thinking Ace was the greatest guitarist in the world. I know of no other guitar player who has made people want to be a Rockstar more than the Spaceman did.

I don't think Ace's solos work if you just look at them as solos. You have to listen to Ace's solo in the context of the song he's playing. That's where he shines as a great rock guitarist. Yeah, he's sloppy, but he's playing the song. He hits the notes at exactly the right time and adds his own flair to a lick. Ace is a solid guitarist.

I've been playing guitar for forty years. It's all because of Ace and my grandmother. Because of those to talented guitarists I was able to find MY voice as an awkward teenager and my spirituality as an adult. I can think of no better compliment to give them. As a young teenager I would take my albums of Kiss, Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and many more to "Granny Grunts" house as we affectionately called her, and she would transcribe the guitar parts then teach me the "Measures" as she called them. Other than her dislike of Ted's "foul mouth" on Double Live Gonzo, Granny always came thru. I dearly miss her. Yes, it was the GREAT ACE and GRANNY GRUNT who brought untold emotional riches to my life. I'm sure Ace inspired an entire generation of kids to "Explore the outer reaches of the Universe in search of guitar glory."

      G. Lee GnR got a different style. KISS is more about distortion and overdriven sound. Izzy and Paul sounds pretty different. It's easier to tell which sound is coming from Izzy and thus he's more appreciated by the public.
Moreover, Izzy is JUST a rhythm guitarist so he gets all the attention for being one. Paul is a vocalist and song writer too. Very few people pay attention to his guitar. They are too busy with his vocals and songs.

Being over 50 and seeing many live shows of various artists, I will agree that Paul and Gene were frustrated so much by Ace's different personality that they never really gave him credit due for his contributions, but Paul is and was a very good front man in concert. He knows how to run a show and works a crowd like the professional he is. His voice is gone, as to be expected at his age, but he is a big part of why their live shows have always been entertaining.
Full disclosure: I have always felt they would not be the commercial success they are without having Ace in the original lineup.

Ace has a style. Like it or not, he has a vibe that's his own, even though he plays a lot of cliches. Rock guitarists used to have swagger before the music became the over processed soul-less sounds that we hear today from some artists. Kiss was never my favorite band, but Ace Frehley is the best they ever had to offer as far as musical talent. He even influenced Van Halen with his two handed tapping. Many kids in the 70's 80's and 90's took up the guitar influenced by Kiss including Garth Brooks. He has what all great guitarists have. He is humble and I respect that.

GamezOf War That has to be the dumbest most ridiculous comment I’ve ever read, “Ace was so such faster and tighter in the 70’s.” Well guess what dip-shit, so was your mother! It’s called being young, see there’s this thing that happens to human beings as they age. They start getting a little slower and a bit loose and aren’t as perfect as they were in their younger years. You’ll see when it happens to you if it already hasn’t, but judging by your stupid comment it already has.

This is a good example of a bunch of his best solos, but he is not in his best moment as a performer here. I encourage everyone to listen to "Alive!" and "Aive II" to really understand the great rock and roll guitarist Ace is....

We were all pretty close to the same age got us all into music… and till this day, whenever I talk to any of my old friends, music comes up in the conversation and some form or another

Wow, a r tompkins! Look how many people showed up ta call ya a dick!
That's how you know which guitarists changed things for people. I could care less how technically brilliant Ace was. When I caught a piece of his cape in 1980 at the Forum after he tore it up and threw it in the crowd, and saw his guitar fly off into the air, I wanted to do something magical on a stage just like that. When I heard him solo in Getaway, and that intro to Rock Bottom, I picked up a guitar and swore I'd sound like that someday.
I'm still playing and loving it today. I've been in bands and been looked at like I was doing magic on a stage. I'm teaching my daughter how to play and seeing her face when she does jangly eye watering loud strumming and I never get tired of it. That's what he did for me, and not that there were a lot of other guitarists who I loved listening to and still do to this day, when I drove by the Viper Room one day a few years ago and saw his name up, nothing had changed. It was still a show I had to be at. I will always love Ace for inspiring me and for all the great music he was a part of, so go suck on a lemon!
