The fattest place on earth isn't in America.
The tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru holds that honor. At only 8.1 sq. miles, with a population of less than 10,000, the country's inhabitants have virtually become giants.
Ninety-five percent of the island's adult population is overweight, and 85 percent of the male adult population is obese, according to ABC News.
However, island natives haven't always been this fat. According to ABC, it wasn't until they began importing Western food that the population's size exploded. Now half of Nauruans suffer from Type II diabetes.

Im Polynesian and what the guy said is 100% correct, Obesity in the islands is a COMBINATION of genetics and lifestyle changes. I dont see why its offensive to the other idiots on here, Polynesians evolved to having bodies that were genetically more efficient in storing minerals and vitamins in foods of island diets (sea food and vegetables) over centuries. This is the result of over 5000 years of travelling over vast areas of ocean waters with limited food supplies. Our bodies adapted in order to survive these journeys. When western foods were introduce, our bodies were absorbing and storing far more calories, fat than the body had been use to when consuming island food, As a result the very genetics that made us survive through out the centuries is now actually our own downfall when trying to survive today. Thats why its so easy for us Polynesians to put on weight muscle which can be a bonus if youre doing weight training but you must draw a fine line and not over do it

Obesity is extreme. Talk about overweight: 70.2% USA, if you have 10 people, on average 7 are overweight, and half of those are obese. These both outnumber non-weight-related health-at-risk people, or what used to be called normal. That is severe; that is disturbing.

When I was in the Philippines a few years ago, I was overweight. I went out to buy a new pair of underclothing. To my dismay, none of the ones I found fit. When I asked an employee for my size, she said, "Oh, American size is over there." I instantly became aware of my size. When I got back to America, I realized that most people are overweight! I instantly signed up with a Muay Thai class and started exercising.

@@AnecdotalPoet Hmm Koreans are the tallest Asians (Oriental Asians), but their height is comparable those of the Western people. I think living standard and diet have something to do with height also. Since most of the countries in Asia are developing it is only normal that they are smaller than western countries. Japan...a rare exception. A country that is rich but their citizens are "short" western standards. It may have something to do with their diet and food consumption. It is known that Japanese eat less that those of the westerners. Asia in general consume less food, compared to westerners.

Nauru is also very fat because it is so isolated and there is no room for agriculture so fruit and vegetables are very expensive to import and therefore having a healthy diet is difficult.

What do you mean by there's no room for agriculture? Is it because the land is not fertile, or the land area is so small that there's no space for farming? I would think being an island, their diet would mostly be seafood-based. Unfortunately, this is the trend happening in most non-Western cultures. People have abandoned their old ways of living. But it's never too late, at least for the younger generation. Maybe increasing import taxes on these unhealthy foods would help.

They basically strip mined almost all 8 square miles of the island, without thinking long-term. Now they're basically like "we should have managed are money better and not relied on other countries to feed us". I can't believe out of 9,000 plus people not a single one of them continued to farm after striking it big, surely one would realize the poop revenues wouldn't last forever.

Food actually has quite addictive qualities. Pair that with nutritional ignorance and you have the recipe for an unhealthy lifestyle. The idea that it's all about personal choice is really quite stupid. Why do you think it is that people in one region of the world or a country happen to have more people who are overweight, and others have people who are less likely to be? It's not simply choices, or personal responsibility or whatever other simplistic explanations people give. It has more to do with environment, culture, and knowledge. Clearly there is a reason Polynesians have high obesity rates, let's get to the root of the problem and fix it rather then point fingers at people and tell them they are making bad choices.

  • @nataliecurry106

I'm not being funny, but America as a country is of a huge population in comparison to this island. Therefore moving the responsibility of fastest people on earth to a tiny island will not resolve the high population of Americas obesity problem. I have been fortunate enough to meet the people of simoa and tonga and awe islands and although most of the older generation are a little overweight their younger generations strive in fitness. most of the younger generation are extremely healthy, fit and strong. also if we get down genetics they are actually 3x the size of a average white person. most of the people tend to end up farming, playing professional rugby or other sports for example nfl teams and so on or they end up as soldiers. I think America should stop and have a look at their population of obesity before blaming others. personally I feel that people should have more education about the effects of obesity and then allow fresh food and vegetables to cheaper and more available, and certain fast food chains should be put to a end. someone at the end of the day is making a absolute fortune of someone being fat.

With all the special sports programs going on like volleyball soccer and football we have a blessing and that is sports programs. Even programs like jrotc help us to lose weight. Our generation is a lot more privileged than our parents' or grandparents' generation. Sometimes you NEED to lose weight to be able to survive high school. My generation is blessed af. Visited Yap and Palau in 2016 and the omnipresent obesity struck me.
During some talks with pretty talkactive inhabitants I understood that indeed, it is a combined problem of little to no physical activity and malnutrition. Before they had to paddle their canoes, fish, work their taro patches, gather and prepare coconut... hard physical work rewarded by modest caloric food.
Then they sold the fishing rights in their waters to foreign countries and with the money came the possibility to import cheap (and unhealthy) western food. One trip to the local chinese owned groceries shop evidenced that people are favoring chips, frozen ground meat, canned bear and candy. You'll find very little local fish, vegetables or fruit. On top of that, the climate being hot and humid, any physical activity is strenuous, so people naturaly avoid it. They prefer to sit around, talk, drink, eat and chew their betel nuts. Sad but true: when we were doing our diving there, a group of elderly germans were too. They took up diving only recently, but knew each other from their common hobby, which was "Dragonboat Paddling" (sort of chinese inspired canoe paddling) They asked the locals if they could rent a paddlecanoe somewhere. The islanders were a bit surprised and amused, but eventually organized two canoes and took the germans for a little tour of the laguna. As we later learned, they had a little race at some point and the german elders were totally astonished as to how easily they toasted the locals. Seems like the art of paddling is next to lost among the local population...

I think that the cultural angle is also important here. In many SW pacific nations there was a historical precedent that only the wealthy members of society were fat (you've got to be able to afford a lot of food to get fat of a fish based diet). Being fat became associated with wealth, and so there was no social taboo about becoming fat, in fact it was accepted to the point of being encouraged. Obesity being a sign wealth + western junk food = obesity epidemic.

Lmao. Firstly, because of the detrimental effects of the phosphate industry upon the island's environment, the island now only has limited fertile soil deposits... this in turn affects agriculture (meaning they can't really grow food). Secondly, Nauru is a coral atoll which means there is already little soil to grow fresh food. These two reasons alone are the primary reason why food needs to be imported to Nauru, because there is simply not that much available. THIRDLY, it is been scientifically proven that fatty foods (AKA western food) is highly addictive. These people rely on these foods as sad as it is. They aren't dumb, they're making do with what they got and they're experience the result of exploitation and globalization.

All these islanders have to do is transition back to subsisting on fish, which is what most islanders traditionally ate, and whatever vegetables are indigenous to the island, and they will lose weigh and regain their health.
Being traditional hunter gatherers, their bodies will react the most adversely to a high refined carb and high sugar containing diet, which is what the Western diet is.

Samoans in Samoa are very healthy people. There's hardly seriously sick people there! They are healthy because they never lack food, they eat healthy, (natural food source), and they don't have homeless people. Only the Western world that has so many issues with health and foods, not the Polynesians. The majority of the aids come from black people. The majority of rotten teeth come from asian people. The majority of those with malnutrition come from Indian people and also Africans. The middle eastern world have been facing turmoil continuously with wars, homeless people and deaths. The lip issue of babies come from the Hispanic villages and countries, and The majority of cancer, diabetes, psychos and all kinds of bad unheard of issues, come from the United States of America. Samoa is a blessed island, as well as other surrounding islands as far as lands and food resources is concerned. The only thing we humans have in common, is that we all have different reasons of why we die, and that's normal for a life in a body of a moral human.

I'm doing a paper on Nauru and this video gave me cancer. That theory was stupid. I thought he was heading to the right direction when he mentioned the phosphate mining but then he went into a different direction. Because of the phosphate mining, 80% of the land is uninhabitable. They can't grow fruits or vegetables. Because they can't grow their own produce, they only eat fried rice from the hole in wall restaurants. He also even mentioned Nauru is dirt poor...you can't afford gourmet food when you're poor. Fast and greasy food is the only way to go.

We store fat as a long-term energy store because thousands of years ago food was more scarce.

@Nayr747 The reason fast food restaurants use hydrogenated oils is due to their higher boiling points and longer shelf life. Deep frying requires very high temperatures and hydrogenated (saturated) oils have stronger chemical bonds than unsaturated oils (like olive oil), therefore withstanding higher temperatures. As a result, the smoke point is higher as well. There are many immediate economic benefits, but I agree that its not worth the health risk.

This hapened to certain Native American tribes also... Whenever an indigenous population whose diet consisted of primarily fruits, native vegetables, and wild caught fish, switches to packaged foods, soda, fatty cuts of meat etc. there will be health repercussions. This happened in a relatively short period of time... They have become sedentary- going to the supermarket, and not hunting, fishing, engaging in agriculture. The Papagayo tribe has one of the highest diabetes rates too.
