Prophet Mohammad (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him), when he passed by al-Hijr - which was the dwelling place of Thamood - said: “Do not enter the dwelling places of those who wronged themselves, lest there befall you what befell them, unless you are weeping.” Then he covered his head and hastened until he left the valley. Narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him).

We made a road trip across Saudi Arabia way back before this place was declared as a Heritage site, in a 1995 corolla. We visited this place and parked our car right in front of those entrance doors. The security there did not allow us initially but after we told them we travelled for like 2500 kms to see this, they allowed us. We even had the option to enter the houses but chose not to because, in Islam we aren't supposed to stay at longer times at places were wrath of Allah has befallen. It was such a great experience, we didn't have any cameras with us (couldn't afford it) but the memories are still fresh.

Very atmospheric place, some Saudis consider that there is a curse on Madain Saleh and will not visit. It's amazing how much Saudi has changed the last few years. I left the country almost 7 years ago and visiting Madain Saleh was unimaginable. We've been taught in schools that we shouldn't visit for religious reasons as the people who used to live there were punished by GOD for their sins and not believing their prophet Saleh. But now people are going there for tourism and festivals where they have actors men and women reenacting the said punished people by God. Just incredible.

In the 1980s I worked near Jeddah for over 4 years. The weekend comprised late Thursday afternoon and a Friday only. Went on some brilliant camping trips with our local Expat Bushwacker’s Group . We travelled far and wide in Saudi including the mountains (seeing eagles soaring in the valleys below was an amazing experience). Frequently travelled up the Taif Escarpment which in those days was quite daunting given the standard of driving by locals and state of the road! One of our best trips was to the Hijaz Railway with steam train still on its side and broken rails from when Lawrence blew it up and Madain Salah (compares favourably with Petra). In those there was no tourism or infrastructure . Slept outside under the stars and will never forget witnessing the sun rising over the Madain Saleh site. Tombs very beautiful and impressive . Loved it !!

Jason I know you are not Muslim, but just wanted to share information what is written in Islamic texts about this place. What is well-known among the historians is that the dwellings of Madyan, to whom the Prophet of Allaah Shu’ayb (peace be upon him) was sent, are in the north-western part of the Arabian peninsula, which nowadays is called al-Bada’, and the surrounding region. Allaah knows best whether that is true. If that is true, then it is not permissible to visit these places with the intention of looking around, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him), when he passed by al-Hijr - which was the dwelling place of Thamood - said: “Do not enter the dwelling places of those who wronged themselves, lest there befall you what befell them, unless you are weeping.” Then he covered his head and hastened until he left the valley. Narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him).

It is also mentioned in Ibh Kathir’s commentary of the Qur’an that when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) passed through Al-Hijr on his way to Tabuk “he covered his head and urged his camel to go faster, saying to his Companions: ‘Do not enter the dwellings of those who were punished unless you are weeping, and if you do not weep then make yourself weep out of fear that perhaps what struck them may also strike you.” Despite the clear warning of Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, why is the Saudi government indeed trying to publicize Mada’in Saleh as a tourist attraction?

A Historical Places the Madain Saleh is arguably the greatest attraction (non-religious) for tourists visiting Saudi Arabia. Located close to the small northern town of Al Ula, this was the second-largest city built by the Nabataeans after Petra over 2000 years ago. Its 131 tombs carved into the free-standing rock of the Arabian desert is a sight to behold. Good Job again Jason thank you.
