I can't agree with our host saying she didn't care anymore. But at that moment, Raya had to feel betrayed, AGAIN, and was grief-stricken over Sisu.
Yeah she was completely enraged and I can’t blame her one bit.
Indeed
Agreed
Something I picked up on, I liked how Sisu’s human form, her teeth wasn’t perfect
In sooooo many Disney computer animated movies nowadays, their teeth are perfect
The imperfections that make her perfect. :)
It certainly would be a nice step forward for Disney to start teaching the younger generations, especially young women, that it’s okay, and beautiful to have imperfections. Because so many of us have grown up in a society that expects you to look perfect, and if you don’t, you’re “ugly” or “unattractive.” Its bred this whole ideology in young girls and women that’s caused disorders like anorexia and social anxiety.
It’s okay to strive to better yourself, while still not hating or self depreciating how and who you are.
@@GabsARV I think her dragon design fits her character, it bugs me the design is used for the other dragons because it fits Sisu more the most in my opinion, her not looking like a traditional asian dragon makes Sisu more unique, in my opinion..
“If you lost a puppy and someone said ‘WeLL wE sTiLL hAvE a BiG cHuNk oF It!’, would that make you feel better??”
Is single-handedly my favorite line from a Disney movie.
I like how the Tail chief died. She didn't just get turned into stone and come back with the rest. She hid herself behind a fortress and slowly wasted away because she was too paranoid to trust anyone else further reinforcing the message in this movie
I just find the fact you said "I like how the Tail chief died." so bluntly very funny to me. 🤣😂😁
@@ThisFaceWasMadeForRADIO their pfp matches too 💀
They said she actually died from her own trap. Which is an even better message then her just wasting away because of them
I also want to point out the position of her hand. She is mimicking the stone-statue people with a "giving" gesture.
Now, I don't know how to fully interpret this observation with how she also made herself part of the final trap of her tomb. One idea I had was that she set up that trap, but as the last moments of her life come, she realizes her utter mistake and made one final gesture to atone. Or she made that gesture on purpose to draw the tomb raider in the hopes of giving them a false sense of security (like it almost did to Sisu).
Wait the message was trust? Wow I didn’t realise that the movie was about trust did they even say the word trust once? Who would’ve guessed they never made it obvious at all (obviously joking the third act would not shut up about trusted)
I gotta give Raya some props for being a action and adventure film from Disney, haven’t seen something from them like that since treasure planet .
Does Moana not count for you?
@@saphira8080 Moana feels more like adventure, it doesn't have the fight scenes Raya has
@@saphira8080 good question. Moana doesn’t include a lot of physical confrontation amongst humans, so maybe not?
Moana is very similar I will admit. It’s got some good action scenes and literally the rock as a demigod. But there are two things that defeat it in the end from being an action movie. One it’s a musical. Not trying to crap on the genre, but action musical won’t work. It’s why Hercules isn’t considered action. And two, the fighting and chases was a focus of Raya. So much detail goes into how Raya fights and without magic. Maui really only fights one person in the film, and it’s mostly through shapeshifting snd trickery, not full on force (in keeping with Maui of course).
It’s always so refreshing hearing someone else sharing the love of treasure planet!! Brings the good memories of childhood and those innocent adventures imbued with imagination to the surface!
I'm just very happy someone else is finally saying that "trust everyone blindly" was never the message of the movie.
Finally someone got it!
Why does everyone keep thinking that? To quote another Disney movie, maybe they need to dig a little deeper to find the true message.
A close friend of mine has a lukewarm opinion of this movie because of such a misinterpretation of the message; maybe sharing this video can change said friend’s mind! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
EXACTLY. I constantly saw everyone saying that and commenting that, but guess what jackass, that mever was the message. Especially on that "Everything WRONG with Raya and the last dragon" video... such annoying people really. Creating problems out of thin air.
These things make me guilty of liking the movie and not finding anything wrong with it. It's one thing if it's a movie like Twilight that has real toxic and harmful problems.
@@whitewolf1310 yeah what movie?
Anyone else notice just how many people the Druun wiped out? If there were 5 clans to begin with, Tail is essentially a person-less wasteland, Heart got abandoned when the Gem split, and Spine got wrecked by the Druun with only a sole survivor, there were only 2 clans left: Talon, built on the water, and Fang, walled off by water on an artificial island. That means that about 60% of the world got wiped out just by the Druun.
Yeah that is freaky. We don’t know how many people from Heart made it to Talon or Fang when everyone fled, or if there was anyone in Tail that we didn’t see, but the places themselves were mostly deserted.
@@dbseamz Definitely unsettling, to say the least. If the movie had been a series, I would've loved to see the extent of the worldbuilding and the effect of the loss, desperation, hope, and despair of everyone's situation

@@ieatmice751 The point of saying it is that our current justice system is almost entirely focused on punishing “bad people,” rather than addressing the conditions that cause the crime in the first place.
@@simondowns2683 Well the justice system (police, courts) still has to do it's job. Changing the conditions should be a priority but its not necessarily their line of work.
@@simondowns2683 "Addressing the conditions" will forever be a work-in-progress. The definition of "poverty" from the last century is completely different from today, and a century later, that definition will no doubt change again. However, there will always be people who resort to crime due to what they perceive to be poverty, and law enforcement rightfully exists to keep those criminal filth off the streets.
Something I think a whole lot of people miss is that the message of the movie isn't simply about trust, it's about mutual trust. Every instance where trust turns out to be a mistake is one where the characters are interacting with people who have been told not to trust their whole lives, and in Namaari's case, she's also being manipulated/instructed by her mother, who doesn't trust the other lands. Ultimately, a lack of mutual trust created the literal apocalypse (twice, according to Sisu), but its trust that saves the world and begins the process of repairing it at the end of the film. Namaari finally decided to take a risk for someone other than Fang, and Raya and co. realized that holding onto hatred and grudges (which have kept their world back for, oh, 500 years) was only going to make things worse.
Edit: yeah, I made this comment, like, halfway through. Thank you, Cinemawins, for addressing this issue and taking a new angle on it I hadn't seen before. Your point is honestly stronger than mine, since it faces a hard truth of life: that sometimes, trust has to go one way before it becomes mutual.
THANK YOU!!!!
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS THE TRUST MESSAGE!!!!
I think we need to touch on how great the animation is, especially when things are wet. The slight darkening of Benja's gloves after he dips them in the water in the beginning, or the shine on Raya's hair after everyone comes back, or the way Sisu's "hair" kind of clings to her head when she does that little spin in the water. Even the shine on Raya's cheek after she wipes her tear right before she awakens Sisu. The animation in this movie is so smooth and detailed in some shots and it's beautiful the whole way through. I love how you can see the individual fiber strands that make up Tong's tunic, too
THANK YOU
13:44 I always interpreted it as Namaari being sad, since the dragon she’s been a huge fan of since childhood is now growling at her in anger.
I feel like its all those emotions at once, both sadness AND the ones mentioned in the video.
I like how he addresses the trust stuff. all the reviews i've watched all criticise it for the message being 'trust everyone regardless of how they treated you' but this guy gets it but also says that it could've have been a bit better which I wholeheartedly appreciate
I agree, they’re looking at the trust message wrong.

Something I noticed when watching the movie is that at you look at Sisu’s older brother when Sisu’s family is using the gem (15:27 in the video) his hands are cupped like how the people who got turned to stone hands are, which means that the pose that those people have is technically them putting their trust in Sisu to use the gem.
Omg I never thought of that but I love it :0
YESS I KNEW SOMEONE ELSE WOULD NOTICE THAT!!
One thing I caught in this movie that I wanted to share was that the main vehicle for getting around in the whole movie is a floating restaurant! As the adventure party gathers, they have many scenes of them interacting and becoming family in a place meant for food. I think there is a good theme of eating together brings people together thing going on, set up by Raya's dad talking about the soup made from different ingredients across the land. As the story goes on, we see the party bonding more and more over food the entire time!
Also heart brings sugar to the soup! The most peaceful nation bringing the sweetest ingredient
+.
The trust theme would be fine if it weren't so incomplete. The problem is that Namaari lacks any kind of redemption arc. She betrayed Raya, and in a way that completely destroyed the known world - not a small betrayal - and does nothing at no time ever in the film to indicate that she is deserving of a second chance. Without that redemption arc, without requiring that Namaari demonstrate *some* kind of desire to change, the trust theme is dangerous. That's how people get trapped in abusive relationships.
The world, the real world, our world isn't suffering due to a lack of trust, it's suffering due to a lack of repentance (meaning change of heart, not even religious). Were people who caused harm more willing to admit their wrong and actively change, trust would immediately follow.
And Sisu needed to learn boundaries and to be careful with who you trust
Soren from The Dragon Prince did it better.
@@jeffreygao3956 Soren’s redemption arc was one of the best things I had seen. Totally unexpected too. And let’s not even talk about the choice he made in the final episode
@@cyborgcuttlefish6326 "It's so nice to be on the side that's unchaining things!"
The movie overall would have worked so much better if they had left out just the few seconds that showed Namaari’s finger on the crossbow trigger during the standoff scene. As it is, you have a point: the overall scene plays out like Sisu’s trust got her killed and Raya was right NOT to trust and just acted a little too late.
But think about how the scene would have gone without that closeup. If her finger HADN’T been on the trigger, it would imply that she might have chosen to put the bow down-which would have made sense based on her conversation with Virana earlier in the movie, she seemed on board with the idea of bringing Sisu back and re-making the gem. Raya’s sudden, UNtrusting move to disarm her would have then been what caused the crossbow to shoot (In no expert on crossbows, but something slamming into a loaded one that’s ready to shoot could conceivably break something and/or release the tension in a way that would make the bolt launch)-in fact when I first saw the movie that’s what I thought had happened. This would make Namaari’s later line that Raya is also responsible for Sisu being shot make a lot more sense, and make the point that *sometimes*, (not always), doing things out of fear and distrust can make situations worse.
I think my favorite versions of dragons always end up being closest to Sisu and her siblings in temperament. There's just something RIGHT about the intelligent, wise dragon, compared to the ravenous monster. Of course, I'm also incredibly fond of the look of western dragons, all big and wings and stuff, so...
I completely agree with you. I like the look of both eastern and western dragons, but I can't stand it whenever they're portrayed as vicious evil monsters. I always saw dragons as majestic noble creatures that humans can look up to and be inspired by, like the most intelligent creature to ever walk the planet. I never saw them as something for humans to fear. I was born in the year of the dragon so I've always sort of identified myself with them, and as a kid I would get offended whenever I saw them portrayed negatively.
you should read the eragon book series if you like that kinda stuff.
@@chadwolfman OH I did. I was dead center in the target demographic when the first one came out. They don't hold up, but I wouldn't be surprised if they played a large role in my opinions on dragons, since it was the first thing I read to so heavily feature them. Heckin loved Sapphira

"Sisu" is a word in Finnish. It doesn't translate well into English but it's basically the definition of "not giving up" and "having guts to do so". Or as a simple google search says "strength of will" But I don't think the producers knew the word existed although the word describes Sisu in the film pretty well.
When he started listing southeast asian weapons and martial arts i got really giddy for no reason lmfao. As a southeast asian individual who hails from the philippines, it's so amazing how he was able to recognize fighting styles, and research the weapons used by Namaari, and Raya, like the Filipino Arnis. Dunno if anyone things about this, but it really sucks that Raya's father missed like 6 YEARS of Raya's growth. That's time he'll never get back. It's like he went to sleep and she was a kid the last he saw her, and then the minute he woke up again, she was a full grown adult. Time passed for Raya, but for the chief it could have felt like the blink of an eye. That had to be so jarring, and I honestly don't think that they made that clear enough. Another fun detail I love about this movie is when Raya comes up to have her final confrontation with Namaari. When she brings the stone up and repealed the Druun coming towards her, two of them are shown being repelled, showing that one life just ended so that they could replicate, meaning they had JUST killed Namarri's mom or relatively recently. This means that Namaari was NOT the only one in on the plan to steal the gem, and based on her other interactions with her mother, I doubt it was even her idea. -The effects. Just the lighting of the water and tone of Raya’s skin are stupidly good animation.
-The dragons designs. They are long fluffy magic noodles. That is just beautiful.
-Shisu’s misunderstanding of the world around her. It makes sense that, after the last thing you remember doing o save the world is having to trust people, you would naturally think that everyone is to be trusted.

-Just seeing how the hatred had changed Raya after Shisu was killed. She was ready to kill. It added a great effect.
-The symbolism. How, because Shisu is the last dragon, and she is a water dragon, her being killed drained the water. Water truly is ‘magical’ in this world, as it acts as protection against the Druun. Also, how when they basically become un-stoned, the rain is what washes it away. Rain is water. It is Shisus magic and trust that saves them.
Now, things that should have been changed:
-A better Namaari redemption arc. We didn’t have much of her in the movie. I believe that there should have been more of her realizing how corrupted the world was, and how she wanted to change it.
-A close up of her finger off the trigger, not on. If they had showed that she was hesitating on shooting and had decided not to. If that had been shown, it would have created the impression that Namaari had finally been redeemed. However, it was Raya lashing out in her distrust that killed Shisu. I’ve operated a few crossbows, and hitting them while they are loaded DEFINITELY sets them off.
That was all for now. I will update more later.
Amazing movie. Since theaters were closed in my country for many months, I had to watch this movie on Disney+. I haven't seen any trailer for it so it was a completely blind watching. The only thing about it that I heard were some rumors from people on youtube saying that it wasn't that good and the main plot is boring, so my expectations weren't too high. But this movie really impressed me. I liked the story about Kumandra, the dragons and the druuns, the main characters were interesting and the side characters were funny (I think I don't need to mention the outstanding visual quality). One of my personal little favourites were the fight scenes. I'm a star wars enjoyer, so I really love some good animated sword fighting scenes and this movie had some of the best I have seen in years.
I can tell that he likes CinemaWins more than CinemaSins cause sins is all about stupid plot holes and cliches used, while wins is all about the love and thought that was put into the movies.
I get the impression he made the channel in response to CS' petty nitpicks.
It's also a misleading mentality and also why if you sees something rated 80% or so is usually just meh, and 70% is flawed.
Since your average "wholesome" person thinks on the scale of 5, 5 is the average standard, and only if there is something terrible should you take away from that score.
"Nothing great about this thing, and honestly it's a bit boring, but it's not a catastrophic failure, 4.2/5."
The art style of the opening is done in the shadow puppet style - in Indonesia we call it Wayang. I also love all the little details from the food (sate), to the clothing (batik), to the environment (rainforest). It's really cool to see a character who looks like me or someone I could have gone to school with on the big screen this way. If this had come out when I was growing up, it'd be my favourite movie.
Malaysian here
Same same same 😍
It might be my favorite movie the more I watch it
"Nothing will make you feel like a child more than reconnecting with your previously stone dad after 6 years" damn her father came back from buying cigarettes
I really must thank you for making this video. Even though this movie didn’t take off as much as Disney’s other big name movies like Tangled, Frozen, and Encanto, I might be among the small minority of people that actually loved Raya when it came out (and still do). This movie will always be my favorite (despite the fact that other movies top it in terms of quality) and no one’s negative opinions are ever going to change that.
Living for such a subtle Eragon reference with a 'Thunder of Dragons'
I like how the Tail Chief, the one who first spoke about how untrusting she was to heart and then body slams Raya, is found later on. While the other characters are just in the stone "sleep", Not only did she pass away, but she passed away alone, shutting everyone out with traps, and while holding the gem in the same pose the stone statues make. It immediately sets up the main resolution by showing what happens when we let fear and cowardice take control over trust and bravery. While the Droon at least give a chance to prove the good in you, lack of trust for anyone leaves you loneliness and death.
Yeah, I was lowkey disappointed that the fight scenes weren't just "The Raid Redemption, but for kids," but seeing Raya and Namaari use Pencak Silat and Muay Boran respectively in their first fight really tickled the martial arts nerd inside of me.
Ha! Imagine they got Iko Uwais for this movie!
The scene where Namaari teared up at seeing Sisu had me choked up as well. It showed the emotional nuances between those sides.
I like how when the people turn to stone they cup their hands which at the end of the movie how they collect the water that inevitably saved them.
One detail I noticed that wasn’t mentioned in this video was the weathering of the stone steps in the first part of the movie from where the water was flowing up the stairs
Could you cover Everything Great About Rango? It would be greatly appreciated.
Rango!
The legend has returned. Hope the kids are okay.
Here's something I noticed fang does puppet shows and in tangled in the dream song they say fang does little puppet shows. So I found that hilarious.
Wait, so are the Ruffians from Fang?
Wait, that guy’s name was Fang? I must have misheard when I watched Tangled. Then again I know I misheard another lyric from that same song.
1:19 cuteness overload
Oh, I have been WAITING for this one . . .
Edit: Also, 12:00
HE MENTIONED SHE-RA!! I'm SO glad he's seen it, or, at least, is aware of it. It is a SERIOUSLY good watch.
YES! EXACTLY! Everyone go watch it. It’s amazing. Free on Netflix.
@@pinkajou656 Amen. I genuinely mean this when I say it's quality rivals that of Avatar's
For the honor of Greyskull!
The exposition at the beginning looks just like the exposition animation in Moana
That’s what I thought
i love the 2D animation exposition portion of a lot of disney movies
i think a few people who worked on moana worked on raya and the last dragon so i’m not surprised there are multiple similarities between the two films
Welcome back! Hope the fathering of two kids now is going well!
Honestly, I love the “totally lowkey unnoticeable” digs on society throughout the video! They confirm that my dude over here has got a good head on his shoulders 😝❤️
The movie felt like an overly extended version of one of those short films in the trailer sequence at the movies (something like Disneys lava)
Also, when a character is mistrustful, there is a normal focus while when they embrace Sisu's point of view, there is a bokeh blur instead. By looking at this detail you can see at which moments characters start to change their mind.
Thank you for finally pointing out that Namaari was a 12-year-old when she betrayed Raya, and was heavily implied to be following the instruction of her mother. I can see Namaari being told to do *anything* to gain Raya's trust: be completely open to her, share your true desires, **offer up your most prized piece of jewelry**. No matter what, it's worth it to get the gemstone.
She also murderd Sizu before the climax. This dumpster fire isn't salvageable with fan wanks.
Jonathan Lee that’s called the darkest hour and it’s so very common in media. It’s part of good writing. Stop hating on the film when it follows a very classic adventure style structure.
@@Iaml3j0 she "murdered" Sisu because of Raya. No need to be an asshole dude
@@tutumazibuko2510 What did Raya do to cause Namaari to shoot Sisu?
@@genevieveowusu885 Raya thought Namaari would shoot Sisu, so she whipped the crossbow out of her hands, but instead that caused her to shoot at Sisi instead of stopping her
3:42 asians dont even wear shoes into their own homes so this feels right in my eyes since i am south east asian
Same
Can we just win the gorgeous and intricate details in the animation. Not just the landscapes but the unique look to each of the dragons and the details in the clothes and hairstyles. The animation is just stunning.
I would seriously love a tabletop RPG built around something like this. South-Asian inspired fantasy setting with fantastical creatures but little to no magic on the people side of things sounds like so much fun to just mess around in.
tbh the worldbuilding in this movie is just top notch
PLEASE.
You HAVE to make Everything Great About Legend of thew Guardians, The Owls of Ga'Hoole!
That movie NEEDS your treatment!
I second this.
@@berengustav7714 Third!!!!
I’m absolutely behind this.
I actually think he already did it. Or maybe it was a dream. Idk haha that movie is gorgeous too! I love it
@@nitzeart He never did it, that was CinemaSins.
And now that they have that movie up their belt, THERE'S NO EXCUSE!
"Disney isn't big on sequels..."
That changed? Just going off the top of my head here so I'm probably missing some, but Aladdin got two, Beauty and the Beast got two, The Lion King got two, The Little Mermaid got one, Lady and the Tramp got one, Bambi got one, Cinderella got two, A Goofy Movie got one, The Rescuers got one, Atlantis got one, Pocahontas got one, Frozen got one, Wreck It Ralph got one, and that's not even counting all the Pixar or live action stuff.
Sure, most of them weren't theatrical releases, but they were still revisiting the same world in some form.
Little Mermaid had a prequel, too, about Triton banning music because it "killed" his wife
Tangled and Big Hero 6 got their own series.
@@zolacola7924 Oh dang, Little Mermaid meets Footloose? Now I'm intrigued...
@@JMcMillen Oh yeah, I wasn't even thinking about animated series. I remember Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Lion King got those, too.
okay but these suck, if they make a sequel for a movie like Raya it has to be good to explore the universe
Storytime: So back in school, I was never a fan of group projects due to the fact that I was forced to do everything while everyone one else gossiped about whatever, but I did it because I didn't want to fail with them. By the time high school rolled around, I had just given up and would asked to do them myself simply because I couldn't trust anyone else to do their part. Any time someone DID help out threw me for a loop, but those times were few and far between. Sadly, I carried this mentality for a while after, and it wasn't until recently that I learned to trust people again.
I told you that to tell you this: while it isn't my favorite Disney movie, "Raya and the Last Dragon" was the first one I could truly connect with.
Finally, someone else acknowledging the amazing score!
I went into this movie not knowing anything about it and having no expectations, and ended up loving it so much.
The message about trust is incredibly timely, though it's probably falling upon deaf ears among the politically inclined adults. I hope the kids who grow up after watching this movie will remember it when they're in charge of the world.
The ending edit was the icing on the cake. Guffawed so hard at all the "trust" cuts
And then Namaari ending it with, "What?!"
"A thunder of dragons". Don't think I didn't catch that Inheritance reference.
That's also just the official name for a group of dragons
@@theadventuresofhuckletaryfin It's the only other place I've ever heard that term used. Maybe it originated from it?
@@theadventuresofhuckletaryfin "A group of dragons is called a thunder. (Yes, I invented that. Yes, I'm proud of it.)" - Christopher Paolini, Author of the "The Inheritance Cycle" tetrology.
@@Zerphses Cool. Never knew where it came from. Now I'm interested in the series
Yes!!!! I wasn't the only one who noticed. That's awesome.
I'm obsessed with Raya. It was really great and very detailed like rain drops falling from hair, baby hair on the skin and the clothes.
This was the best movie of the year, no matter what... This had me in tears, in awe, in shock and in belief for everything that happen. I'd love to live in this new world....a United Kumundra😭😭😭
It didnt came out this year.
So....Encanto and even turning red were much better...
