  • As a socially conservative country, Singapore has numerous restrictions on the rights of the same-sex couples, from not being able to adopt children to being unable to get married. But one legal statute has been causing quite a stir recently. Singapore’s top court is now deliberating a challenge to overturn Article 377A, which prohibits sexual activity between consenting gay men, but allows sexual activity between lesbian women. And the challenge has once again ignited discussions on the place of the LGBT community in Singapore. But how do ordinary Singaporeans feel about this legal challenge, and on same-sex relationships in general? We hit the streets to find out more.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Singaporean population.

Gays can't get legally married so such a position is comically absurd. Listen up gays, sit on your hands most of your adult life until same sex marriage is legalized when you're too old to even get an erection anymore.

That's very much a religious argument that while it sounds a bit more enlightened than "no marriage for gays", it ends up in the same place. Since there IS no right to marriage for gays thereby no sex. This was and is an ingrained message from the church (Christian in my case). No sex before marriage and definitely no being gay! Just get over it and be straight! Ugggh...

@@qwerty-vp1sb Yes but he isn't in favour of any sex before marriage, that's probably his religion beilefs,it's his own choice through and the whole of Singapore shouldn't have that restriction just because Christians think that way we have freedom of religion we should be able to have sex whenever we want as long as it's 2 consenting adults.

It’s a specific negative view of sex between two men.
There is a negative view of sex between women, but it is also affected by a long history of ignorance of women’s enjoyment of sex and general sexuality that affects that view which would be way too long for me to explain in a RUclips comment.

If you ever go to India... you'll find their ancient temples has many carvings of all type of relationships normal + homosexual statues....It really baffled me! I think thats the reason India repealed colonial british law 377A last year..!

I'd say young people are significantly more open minded and politically aware. They at least want to talk about politics/social issues/have an opinion, while frankly a lot of the older generation (no surprises, mostly Boomers) have "conservative" mindsets that have been dictated to them over years of the same conservative political party building/maintaining the government after the British left post WW2.
The older generation want to keep the status quo because they've been frightened into thinking "change" = risk of society/"everything Singapore has built" imploding. A lot of them are also very (fundamentally) religious because your religion is often seen as a sign of your class/connection to your cultural roots.
For example there are a lot of upper middle class Chinese Christians who are essentially the Bible Belt White Conservatives of Singapore. There's a history of Western missionary churches there. So they've been privileged by the system, why upset the status quo and risk 'total moral catastrophe'?

As a Singaporean that received 2 years of general studies education (general paper lah lol), my teacher implied/taught/hinted to us that sometimes such changes are not readily available not because the government themselves are against it, but because there is a silent majority. as the government, it would make sense to want to remain in power and not lose it to their rivals. Keeping this penal code will not really change much, but at least for the silent majority, it signals to them that the government is taking a stance against the LGBT community of some sort.
id also like to point out that having this penal code may not mean 2 men cannot openly show affection for one another, they just cannot be *caught* having sexual intercourse. the few ways to get caught is:
    a) do it in public
    b) one of them reports it (man what a snitch)
    c) there's a peeping tom that witnessed it (mmhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)
As a Singaporean, i would like it if it is repealed. I'm not saying i support whatever the government is choosing to do. I do agree with majority of the well-spoken opinions in this video. If this penal code is indeed repealed, it may be quite sudden for a country that is still very much conservative across the board. But, maybe, just maybe, change is that much of a necessity

Close-mindedness and conservation simply do not go well with our open economy, especially when other countries are gradually opening up to accepting same-sex couples. I only hope that all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, can mind their behavior in the public and minimize affectionate display. After all some things are better done behind closed doors.

    DOUBLE STANDARD
It’s ok for lesbian couples to be intimate with one another even in public WHEREAS for gay couples-who are also doing the same thing-it’s not a good thing? What a bunch of BS, do people even know what kind of relationship that they actually have? Like knowing the gay or lesbian couple personally?
If protection from diseases or abusive relationships is the purpose, then WHY doesn’t that piece of legislation do the same thing for lesbian couples where the same aforementioned potential problems can arise?
Why do I say it’s a big bunch of BS?
BECAUSE-PSYCHOLOGICALLY ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS HAVE NO FAVORITES
It doesn’t matter if it’s prevalent or not it’s still a bad thing and we can’t really know for sure what is the actual statistic (because not everyone is willing to tell their situation and statisticians can manipulate the data); even if we do know that it can happen, but we’ll never know how prevalent is that kind of problem with regards to the lesbian or gay couples or anyone....really 😑

  • @Leventhan1

🤔This is issue is more nuanced than you think:
    * Singapore is geographically surrounded by two large Muslim-majority countries, Malaysia and Indonesia. According to their religious beliefs, gay sex is immoral and punishable by death. Given the environment Subgaoire is in, I'm not sure having the state openly sponsoring gay sex is a wise move. While the other governments might be welcoming of that, pockets of extremists in Singapore's neighbours will not look too kindly upon that. Singapore itself also consists of multiple cultural and religious groups with similar beliefs.
    * Singapore utilizes public housing to incentivize family formation and childbirth to counter the low birth rate commonly seen in developed countries. For example, you can only purchase new public housing as a legal family unit if you are under 35. The proponents for the repeal 377A essentially want to legally marry and buy subsidized public housing only meant for opposite-sex families who can bear children of their own. However, accepting same-sex families goes against the goal of increasing the birth rate since they can't bear their own children. Therefore, it goes against the interests of the country to change this law.
    * This law, like other ancient laws in most other countries aren't really enforced. In real life, people are free to couple with whoever they are attracted to.

Singapore is a really conservative country. Living here my entirely life its definitely very conservative. Even the people in the 30s. I would say only the younger one nowdays that people are more open.
But in terms of sexuality, most people doesnt mind same sex couple as long as they are not directly affected by it. But its a problem when they become too public and too “flamboyant”. Even for straight couple, PDA is also kind of uncomfortable for people in the public.
One of the problem about LGBT are the minorities within the LGBT community that publicly, flamboyantly and aggressively force their sexuality on others. While that it itself isnt really wrong, it really gives off a negative impression of this community which deters people from accepting them.
Either way, i feel that such law of having gay sex should be removed or changed becos it doesnt represents the society and the people today since its a law from long ago.

    1. I think people get confused between decriminalising homosexuality and same-sex marriage. A country can ban same-sex marriage but can still decriminalise homosexuality. So people commenting are quite confused.
    2. The guy who says that people should get married first before engaging in sexual acts is talking from a Christian perspective which is that sex is only allowed within a marriage and the Christian definition of "marriage" is the union between one man and one woman in order to procreate and have a family for the survival of the species. The Christian concept of marriage is based on utility.
    3. In my humble opinion, I think that the reason for this ban is because of the low birth rates and also because of National Service.
    4. The reason why Lesbian sex is not decriminalised as well I have nothing to offer and it just sounds strange.

Generally, the younger generation under 30 are very open and supportive of LGBT while older generations are either on the fence about it or very conservative. It seems like the most of the interviewees were mostly quite young under 35 (again, the younger gen tends to hang out more at Orchard Road than the older folks) If you were to approach the “aunties and uncles” at coffeeshops, opinions would be very different.
