I always thought the guys chasing Andie seemed creepy; this video fleshes out why. I know Molly Ringwold said in an inteview that she thought Ducky was written as a closeted gay man, but I don't see it--maybe she was retro-interpreting to make his character and/or John Hughes' writing seem less problematic.

I was in High School when these movies were made.
I remember that Ducky was supposed to be gay, but don’t remember if I recognized it…because back then people were much more motivated, even pursuing relationships with the opposite gender…and I was barely aware of such things as a cis het Catholic girl. Coding Ducky as gay might’ve been intended…but more subtle due to the times.
These movies were progressive in some ways, but were terrible in many others.

awesome video !! and holy shit, your point about the way they like de-queered iona was so real,, i havent sat through the whole movie in years for how uncomfortable the overall vibe was but now that you mention it, yeah the way they treated her character was just weird jfc. reminds me of the breakfast club and the character allison and what they did with that character. like.. it’s really not a glow-up or whatever, it’s just forcing them to fit into the social norm. like the only reason it “works” is because they’re fictional characters, no real person would comfortably make a switch that ridiculous

32:58 Sometimes, men don't understand that trying to help us sometimes is more scary than letting us help ourselves. I've had men I don't know try and coax me into taxis saying, "They want to make sure I get home safe."
Thats horrifying, and it's even scarier when they start insisting. Even if you don't have bad intentions, there's no way for the other person to know that.

I agree wholeheartedly on the being forced into a taxi thing!
I grew up in a remote place with no taxi service, where neighbors lived 20 miles away and told me to call them if i EVER needed a ride because anyone posing as a taxi was a human traff*cker an ass*ultant or or a ki11er
and when I started going out after 21(age) in the city I lived in at the time (when uber was still a thing in that city) I had several instances of having taxis called for me and trying to explain that I couldn't trust their licenses and numbers or even the phone number on the outside and tried explaining until I was in a drunk ramble why it was way safer for the dude (because each time ofc it was a dude 🙄) to get me to an outlet where I could charge my phone and call an uber, because they background check their drivers and have credit card/insurance information, and the vehicle vin. (And besides then I could Call for Help because my phone was charged a little.) (But no they would keep 'convincing' because the taxi had a charging port in there that it was the same)
As you can tell, this riles me up to think about
Especially the time I DID get in the taxi because I feared the driver less than the dude and was worn down and pretty much forced to go against my own boundary
Fortunately the driver was chill and listened to my wishes, dropping me off on a nearby street so I could get to an outlet
But it had me in such fight or flight mode that I RAN away from the taxi after I paid like 30 bucks for 4 blocks and ran 2 streets over before I felt comfortable stopping and buying fries at a restaurant so I could stay there until my phone was charged
All because some grasshole couldn't take no for an answer on the cab.
It was traumat*zing being in that taxi even tho the driver was probably just a normal guy.
I recognized a lot of what I saw in Andie's face in this movie and its really cathartic to see it discussed with such empathy and empowerment.

Lol sorry for unloading on your comment 😆
I'm out of that city and never using a taxi again so long as I can help it

Currently watching this video, and I'm glad that I found on the same page about Andie. You added more that I hadn't thought of. I was watching with family for the first time, and as soon as Andy started his whole... thing, I asked them if this guy really was the love interest because he was a creep, and was eventually going to treat her the same as Duckie. They looked at me like I was crazy.

Nope, you're not crazy. Some forms of abuse are more socially accepted than others. It's messed up. I think Ducky is written to be a comic relief character while Blane is written to be the "hero" of the story. I also heard a rumor (but I can't prove it) that Duckie was supposed to be written to be gay, but Duckie being romantically interested in Andie puts a halt on that. So that's why it's basically a rumor or a scrapped idea.

I thought I was alone in feeling uneasy about Ferris Bueller's day off presentation of women. Thanks for making this

    I just saw this film.
From the very start, that Duckie guy seemed like such a giant red flag. He just felt like such an absolute creep!

What do you think about the thing that people say that Benny bullied Andie because she was jelous of Steff's attention towards her?

    • @turboqueer666
      @turboqueer666  6 месяцев назад +1

That is an interesting theory. I can't confirm that from within the movie itself but I can see that dynamic actually playing out considering Benny and Steph hooked up half way through the movie.

Duckie and Andie are the same age. They’ve known each other for 8 years because they’ve gone to school together. Duckie is not older than her. If anything it’s implied she’s older than him since she can get in a club and he can’t.

Thank-you for your review. I grew up in the 70's and 80's. Sexual aggression towards girls and women was very prevalent then. A lot of the behaviour you see in John Hughes's films were pretty normal back then. In fact, his films are pretty tame considering what actually use to happen. Things have gotten a lot better now.
