Hi, As a new member from the UK - we heard about your wonderful trails through Ryan Van Duzer's channel. We are planning our trip for next year and not sure how many Europeans know about your trails. Definitely potential there for many more tourists to support your trails, towns and communities.
Thanks for your interest Sean. The route is over 50% percent complete now and will take several decades to complete but each year we're working with local partners to finish it. There are large sections of the trail ready for trails users now though. Check out our map: www.railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/route/
A neat idea that I've heard about for years. I'm puzzled as to why there's been very little progress between this video and a similar one from 3 years ago in terms of trail completion? It seems like there's been a significant amount of funding available and yet not much to show for it. Even the website and map are not very dynamic. Maybe the National Parks Service should supervise the promoting, building, and maintaining of a network of trails across the U.S.A. which could include vertical lines to run down the west coast, the Mississippi River, etc.
Hi Jerry, the Great American Rail-Trail doesn't extend to California directly but here's a link to TrailLink our trail-finder app that can be sorted by state: www.traillink.com/
Where there is unplanned sections, are there at least maps for recommended routes? For example, the gap between Bureau Junction and La Salle Illinois is very dangerous and not even any back roads a person can take to be safe from traffic. Thanks,
Thanks for your question. RTC is working with local trail groups to fill in these gaps. If you want to explore these areas now, you can get links to local trail groups who may have more resources. Here's a list: www.railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/route/
Thank ❤ you all the volunteers who are making this amazing concept a reality.
