Just curious, why do you not go to the last chain in row two? There are two chains left on the foundation chain and you went to the next row?

No "purl" stitches ?!? There is no such thing in Crochet. "Purl" is a knitting term. Knitting is done with two pointed needles - and Crochet is done with a single hook. Also - the stitch you are calling "double crochet" is NOT a 'double crochet.' It's a modified TREBLE crochet. A double crochet (DC) is as follows:
With one loop on hook - YO (yarn over), and insert hook in stitch of previous row. YO and pull up loop on hook. You now have THREE loops on your hook. YO and pull through TWO loops, YO and pull through two remaining loops. Double crochet completed. Treble Crochet is the same - except that you start with TWO YO's at the beginning. But you still draw through TWO loops at a time (3 X) to complete a Treble Crochet. You ALWAYS draw through two loops at a time..
And no - this is NOT a case of "everybody has their own individual way of doing things." This is the INTERNATIONAL way of completing these stitches - otherwise - crochet instructions would not be the same all over the world. Look in ANY book of crochet stitches - published in the 1800s or in the 1900s or in the 2000s. They are all the same. Ditto with the diagrammatic instruction books. In ANY language, anywhere in the world. They are all the same. If you are going to be a tutor - you should be doing these things correctly - so you don't pass on bad personal habits to beginners.
