      @@poptravelorg Words of reason? Such ignorant comments from both of you. Of course, if you are not Greek this issue doesn't affect you. And since it doesn't affect *you*, the heck with it, it's not important, let's just "enjoy", right?
      I am Macedonian, I have no relation with those Slavic people (who I have nothing personally against, other than the fact that they are stealing robbing my history and my identity) and I my eyes roll every time I hear or read this so called "North Macedonia" moniker.
      Furthermore, the financial damage to the Macedonian (Greek) companies is incalculable. I know, I work for one (winery), and we had to lay off several people because guess who else is selling "Macedonian" wines, capitalizing on their excellent reputation. So, not only they are stealing my history and my identity, they may end up robbing me of my living as well.
      Other than all that, "let's just enjoy".
      So, next time, it's better to not comment about things you know nothing about--it's better to stay quiet and be thought of as a fool rather than speak out and remove all doubt.

      @@iliassarris1118 I'm sure if you and your neighbors do a DNA test, you will find a lot of Slavic genes. There are no hard and fast boundaries between peoples or "identities." And why are there folk songs in Greek Macedonia without any lyrics, but not anywhere else? Why can I, as a "North" Macedonian, travel into Greek Macedonia and speak Macedonian to the old people there, but you can't come up north and speak Greek? Because in the last century, the Greek governments tried to erase Slavic Macedonian culture, language, identity. Many fled north just to survive; it's an ethnic cleansing. On your side, you're mad that even though the EU let you copyright the term Macedonia, there are other people north where that's the only name they have for themselves, so they use it as well. Don't blame your poorer neighbors for your economic troubles; we all saw how the EU and Germany forced it on you through debt and austerity. Why should we small, poor countries fight against each other?

    Greetings from Tulsa, Oklahoma USA
    Loved this video. It's so interesting to see other cultures.
    Loved all the shops you strolled through. Plus the cat at 18:53
    So many languages. I'm guessing Macedonia, Albanian and many more surrounding the Turkey areas.
    Everything looked so clean, with a few exceptions. like at 49:33
    Was sad to see the beautiful area of abandonment and trash at 1:03:44 around the lovely statues.
    After leaving the Holiday Inn 57:00 did you cross the Vardar River on that beautiful bridge? 59:00
    Loved the plaza by StoneBridge Hotel 37:04 and young children playing in water fountain 39:19 however it's against the law in USA to allow children naked in public. However I got a great laugh at it.
    The Umbrellas were amazing hanging over the shops! 23:36
    I am guessing Coca Cola is very popular in Skopje.
    You did an excellent job panning everything with your camera. Thank you!

      @poptravelorg  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for this comment! The old town is nice to walk around and rather clean. Where it's less touristy outside it looks a bit weird with the new buildings and "different" like the apartment area around 49:33 that you mentioned. It's actually not trash there but somebody selling these shoes and things that are laying on the floor. I also was surprised about this at first yet saw it in other countries.
      Skopje is indeed a mix of different people from the Balkans though as a tourist I don't notice the difference. I noticed many Albanian flags - sometimes more than North Macedonian. I was happily surprised that several people spoke German having worked in Germany or family living there. The locals were friendly which a nice thing in places without mass tourism.
      It was my second time in Skopje. The first time was during winter many years ago on a similar route (from Istanbul - Sofia) yet summer is better. They have their independence day tomorrow on September 8th, BTW - overall it was a bit weird to see the new buildings and monuments in some classical style and english double decker buses there. A big mix...

    • @poptravelorg
      @poptravelorg  3 года назад

      Interesting to hear. For now we don't offer tours though it is something we will consider. I once was in Skopje during winter 2009 and it was rather different from what you see in this video from 2019. There are almost no tourists during winter and I imagine things being even more closed down during the current situation.
      The route that I took back in summer 2019 was Istanbul - Plovdiv - Sofia - Skopje and the continuing to Nis in Serbia, Guca (trumpet festival) and so on. I'd still suggest to go to Macedonia from spring to fall. There can be a lot of snow which just lays there and won't be moved. At least that's my memory and photos from 2009 when during winter I was up at the castle and stepped around by myself in knee-deep snow. Still good memories...like being the only guest at the Hostel which had only cold water... So your best chance is finding flights to either Skopje or Sofia and go from there. You can check kayak.com / skyscanner for flights, busradar.com and the usual hotel booking sites together with current government restriction. Rome2Rio is also useful to find the route from wherever you start

      @Ilija Stojanoski you have to learn the gheg dialect of the albanian language, it is the first way of communication. All of these are the products of the Serbian Academy of Sciences. The same academy that said Albanians have a tail. Albanians before the Ottoman invasion were 80% Orthodox. Bulgarian Boris is baptized in bylis (Ballsh albania) you are not macedonian. you are slavic tribal came from the steps. in mirdita region in albania Bulg means hired land workers. payment method was by land donation.

      @Ilija Stojanoski tosk dialect derives from gheg. This is true. Albanian Highlanders are withe people, not from Azerbaijan. Came and visit Albania sometime. Geg means gigas. Alb(Gjiga) Giants. Symbol of the sun is not Macedonian, but Pelasgian 🤣😂🤣.

    • @youtubearkiv7612
      @youtubearkiv7612 5 лет назад

      @Ilija Stojanoski the double-headed eagle is not a symbol of Christianity; it was first used by the Hittites in central Anatolia. Maybe your Albanian friends know nothing about their history. but I say to you that Macedonian Orthodox today, too, are Albanians assimilated by the doctrine of Pan-Slavism. Matea Mateski, Sinadinowski, Branko Manolowsi ect ect. Language is what distinguishes a population, not symbols, because symbols have been changed based on families that have ruled at different times. after the fall of the Roman empire, the only ancient language surviving in the Western Balkans was Albanian, a descendant of the Illyrians. for example: Dacians lose their language (Romanians) Thracians too. Macedonians, Hellenes, Phrygians, Dalmatians ect ... The oldest language on the Illyrian peninsula is Albanian, and in the north its Hungarian. the others are languages created by the Orthodox Church with the mission of Pan-Slavism. Albania comes from the tribe of parthini kruja today, which was later Latinized as Albani latin: Alba=white, because parth, meaning white. in our language we call it SHQYPE, which means eagle, and it is a unique language in the Balkans. you Macedonians speak Gorani which is a dialect of Slavic. no historian observes Slavs earlier than the 4th century. Alexander the greas don't speak Gorani language 😭😂🤣

    After visiting Sofia I am afraid that all countries in the Balkan are poor, corrupted, have a soviet customer attitude, have many traditional Arabs and gypsies and are located somewhere between 2nd and 3rd world. Nevertheless, these people are usually warmer than Europeans and nature is awsome. Anyway, this is not a generalization.

    • @ivangeorgiev5132
      @ivangeorgiev5132 5 лет назад +1

      It's a pity you had a negative experience in Sofia, however, if one city is poorly managed/maintained, it doesn't mean the country or all balkan states are 2nd/3rd world. Take a walk on the streets of Dubrovnik/ Split (Croatia) and tell me if that feels like a 3rd World Country. Or Istanbul, or Plovdiv(Bulgaria) - the oldest city in the Europe. If you check Nur Sultan in Kazahstan, a country with similar standard of living to Romania/Croatia/Bulgaria, I don't believe you would think of it as a 3rd world country. Same as if you walk on the streets of Detroit and generalize for all of America.

      Nobody can be direct descendant to nobody unless they live under a rock for 3000 years . People that live in Macedonia are mix of a lot of nationalities , including ancient Macedonians . Language has nothing to do with it . In North America people speak English , did they always spoke English ? People that live in todays Greece say they are descendants of ancient Greeks ? Have you ever seen the statues in Athens ? Do you really think those Greeks share a drop of blood with todays " Greeks " ? Every Bulgarian lady that I know and my Bulgarian friends are all blond hair and blond eyes , how do you think that happen ? The map was and still is tailored by the big three . There is only one way were nationalities can be proven and that is by DNA and even then nothing is %100 . But then , history will need to be written all over gain . And there is another thing , we ( " Macedonians " or " Skopians " or " Slav Macedonians " or whatever they call us ) are destroying our self's fast enough already so that nationalists from the hood don't have to worry . What ever is left in our genes , we are making sure is gone and young people don't wont to live there any more . The architecture that you see in this video is disgusting , the government raped my city ... Skopje was an architectural marvel in the 60's after the earthquake . History and religion are the worst enemy of the future . Only with education and science can humans progress .

I am pretty sure Bulgarian citizenship is the highest obtained second citizenship as well among modern macedonians.
      -Also, please comment on the fact all international sources see Tsar Samuil as a king of the First Bulgarian Empire and never a Macedonian kingdom. Gotse Delcvev, Dame Gruev and Sandanski as people who had a Bulgarian national identity despite fighting for a sovereign Macedonia.

In order to survive the vicissitudes of Balkan history and politics, the Macedonians, who have had no history, need one. They reside in a territory once part of a famous ancient kingdom, which has borne the Macedonian name as a region ever since and was called ”Macedonia” for nearly half a century as part of Yugoslavia. And they speak a language now recognized by most linguists outside Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece as a south Slavic language separate from Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian, and Bulgarian. Their own so-called Macedonian ethnicity had evolved for more than a century, and thus it seemed natural and appropriate for them to call the new nation “Macedonia” and to attempt to provide some cultural references to bolster ethnic survival."

      @Aleks_ Ovski Be careful of using the date of a publication as a counter-argument on its validity. That sword cuts both ways.
      However, if you only want to use genetics in determining an ethnicity, be my guest. Your own Skopje Forensics Medicine Institute conducted a six-year long research and concluded in 2012 that "the residents of Macedonia have the most similar DNA with Bulgarians and Serbs”. Ask Dr Zlatko Jakovski from the institute.
      And don't patronize me. You have no idea how much I know. Borza hit it spot on. He's retired a long time ago, indeed, but modern scholars do not disagree with this quote.
      For example Denko Maleski, a North Macedonian professor at the University Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, North Macedonia (International Politics and Contemporary Political Systems) and former Minister of foreign affairs of the then FYROM, said:
      "The creation of the 'Macedonian' nation, for almost half of a century, was done in a condition of single-party dictatorship. In those times, there was no difference between science and ideology, so the 'Macedonian; historiography, unopposed by anybody, comfortably performed a selection of the historic material from which the 'Macedonian' identity was created. There is nothing atypical here for the process of the creation of any modern nation, except when falsification from the type of substitution of the word 'Bulgarian' with the word 'Macedonian' was made. We reach towards some fictional ethnic purity which we seek in the depths of the history and we are angry at those which dare to call us Slavs and our language and culture Slavic! We are angry when they name us what we - if we have to define ourselves in such categories - are, showing that we are people full of complexes which are ashamed for ourselves." (Utrinski Vesnik newspaper, Skopje, FYROM, October 16, 2006)
      But since you speak about DNA, I will leave it here for you to try to dispute your own Institute's results...
