Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on, "The Ultimate Horror, Comedy, Rock-Opera! Phantom of the Paradise". Today I'm writing a little love letter // recommendation to one of my favorite movies ever. Phantom of the Paradise has a little bit of something for everyone. It's a twisted, funny, scary, musical with one of the best soundtracks ever. Check it out if you haven't.

    I couple of fun facts:
Daft Punk cite this movie as one of the inspirations for their Random Access Memories album.
Edgar Wright is apparently a huge fan of the movie and cast Paul Williams for a role in Baby Driver, because of this.
The late Kentaro Miura, creator of Berserk, based the design for Femto on the look of the Phantom of Paradise.

Del Toro also loves this movie to death. He post pictures of his little collection for the film on his twitter and it makes me happy that cool people appreciate this film.

My Chemical Romance also took inspiration, apparently. Some of the lyrics to Phantom's Theme are referenced in "Sleep" from The Black Parade, and Gerard Way did a really cool drawing of Winslow a while back!

It's actually because Rocky Horror and Phantom were shown together for a while back-to-back as a double feature on the midnight movies circuit. The audience found Rocky Horror more engaging, in terms of campy sing-along quality; but also because Phantom was shown second, and most people don't stick around for the second feature, so most audiences tended to clear out after Rocky Horror.

    • @ericisprobablyfullofshit7797

      @@nl3064
Not only that but there was the whole audience participation element that grew up around the movie where people brought their own props, rice, water guns, toast, etc. and developed lines that responded to what was happening on screen.
It became a whole thing that you wouldn't really want with Phantom because it's just a good movie without all that stuff.

    • @nl3064
      @nl3064 Год назад +2

@@ericisprobablyfullofshit7797 precisely, that's why I said they found it more engaging (as in they liked to engage with it in such a way); and as a side note, I read that apparently in...Winnipeg, or maybe Regina? Some Canadian city, there's actually a big cult following around Phantom of the Paradise, so that they even have an annual screening where people show up dressed as the Phantom and other characters from that movie as well.

I was born in 1984 and this is my earliest memory of me loving a movie. My parents said that when I was 2 I couldn’t help but be glued to the tv when this was on. Also that I would ask for them to put it on constantly. Through the years I still put it on. To this day it is my favorite movie of all time mainly for nostalgic reasons. Fantastic video BTW!

I saw PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE at the theatre when it was first released, and was totally gobsmacked! I’ve owned the VHS tape, I still have the DVD and the CD soundtrack. I’ve written about it in Scary Monsters magazine. For decades, I’ve said that if ROCKY HORROR didn’t exist, PHANTOM would have taken on a different life and filled the void. The look of the film, the sets, the colour scheme, the costumes (especially the mask!), the script, everything comes together in a way that films rarely do these days. Then, there’s the music: The best thing about the film is that Paul Williams wrote the music, and the worst thing about it is that Paul Williams wrote the music. Make of that what you will.

An underrated classic! I love this movie. When it comes to the original novel and most adaptations of it, I think Christine should either end up with Raoul or better yet, ditch both men and go on to have a fabulous career instead. But this movie? I'm like, "Winslow and Phoenix forever." Not only are they a genuinely sweet take on the Phantom/Christine pairing, they're presented as soulmates who are so in love they reincarnate throughout the ages to find each other again and again, which is a romance trope I absolutely adore.

I'm from Winnipeg and grew up in the 70's. Yup...seen that! I assume you know that Winnipeg is hosting the 50th anniversary event. 50?!? WOW!!!
ONE Correction... While Paul Williams did write the songs, the (mood) music score was written by George Aliceson Tipton, who is credited at the end of the movie. Mind you,I have heard that the wedding scene music was written by Paul. Bit of confusion with that.
I remember seeing Phantom... with my siblings, when it came out. After the end, I swore I'd NEVER see it again. It totally grossed me out. I must've gotten over it though since I've since seen it....I can't count how many times after.

If this film was as successful as Rocky Horror, it would’ve gotten a Broadway production (with a full soundtrack and new songs) and a remake based on the Broadway musical, similar to Hairspray.
Rocky Horror was initially a Broadway musical which helped it A LOT.
I wonder if Andrew Lloyd Webber would be pissed if this came out on Broadway though.

I cannot wait to rent this! But I do find it odd that you should downcast capitalism. After all, you get paid by a less than fair corporation called RUclips. Don't you think it would be fair if many of your viewers were given to lesser channels? Or will you claim that you worked for those? (And you did, so they are rightly awarded to you.) And what about the money you make from this channel? Would it not be fair to give some, indeed most of that money to others who are less fortunate? Capitalism is FAR from perfect, but it is the best system so far- or would you prefer the system I formerly spoke of, known as socialism? Careful what you wish for friend- it can always get worse.
Regardless, I shall feed the capitalist machine by giving you a watch. You have good taste... in music.
