Great video this is one of my favorite archetypes for flavor, though mechanically is one of the weaker subclasses if 5e. Perhaps ways to fix these would be to: -allow creatures that you talk to with awakened mind to talk back to you (kalshtar and the message cantrip already have similar effects) -increase uses of entropic ward equal to your cha modifier. The abilities fine on its own because warlocks usually don’t have a lot of reaction options. -perhaps give another physic themed ability in addition to thought shield like something similar to the UA physic spells. -make create friend more powerful by allowing for mind control of some sort and/or giving more uses of create friend so you can finally unlock the power of friendship.
I think these are all really good suggestions to bring up with your DM, Brian! Thank you for sharing. I also hope that when the new Player content drops and we get the psionic themed subclasses that the GOOlock gets some love.
I was just thinking this! I’m thinking about playing a warlock and being a huge Lovecraft fan I was interested in the great old one archetype but was discouraged by how weak it is compared to the fiend archetype.
@@Skypup2 Warlocks still get a lot of powerful invocations and the Warlock spells themselves are a lot of fun. I generally find that mechanical weaknesses are not that bad since Warlocks have a lot of potentially great interplay between the DM acting as your Patron and how that affects the story. So don't be discouraged, D&D is about having fun and creating a character that you like to play! if you find that mechanics matter in your campaign you can always ask your DM for some changes!
@@Greyscales you’re so right. You know what I’m gonna give the goolock a shot! It’ll definitely make roleplaying interesting lol thanks for your help you’re channel rocks!
And then along came the fathomless, blowing this entire thing out of the water. Really, I feel like wizards went waaaaaaay too safe and I don't know, "inoffensive?" with this subclass, nothing really feels like you're serving a elder god, there's no special rule where you can substitute spell components with the flesh of a living creature, no mechanics where you drag others into your madness besides maybe two or three spells from the spell list, no corruption you take on for extra power, not even something like creating a envoy of your god. It feels more like you're a mind flayer that wanted to be different and cool, heck, if you told me this was a scrapped psion or charmer subclass, I'd most likely believe you. Great video though, short, snappy, and I love the feel of your art.
Thank you for complimenting my art and video, I really appreciate the support! Hopefully, with all of the new Psionic stuff in Unearthed Arcana, we get to see some improvements to the GOOlock when the next player book arrives.
I don't know man I am absolutely thriving in the role-play and combat in my campaign using detect thoughts combined with telepathy and stuff like ghostly gaze can make you insanely versatile especially if you take the time to prepare outside of combat you can do stuff like paralyzed people through walls talk to people through walls another example of this is you can cast dominate person when you have ghostly gaze as well mind control the bad guy in the other room and make him kill all of his buddies or they kill him either way is a benefit all about How you use it
@@changesforthebetter7172 Yea absolutely! I think that there are many clever ways to use the subclass features as you stated. However, I do think the number of clever tricks that you can pull with a Warlock is limited due to the lack of spell slots. If we cast Dominate Person at level 9, we better hope that they fail their WIS save because Warlocks only have 2 level 5 Spell Slots at that level. And also you need to be careful with Ghostly Gaze since it's treated as a Concentration spell, which will be gone once you cast another Concentration spell-like Dominate Person, meaning you lose the ability to see through the wall so you might not be able to give them attack orders. But yes, I think being clever and having flavour is the heart of D&D!
@@Greyscales I agree completely but at least for me the lack of resources makes it interesting your heart rate will never be higher then when you have ONE slot left and you need to do something cool like use a invocation with a spell like other worldy leap mixed with a last minute hold person to stop someone from getting away. Or save your party from a silenced ambushed by telepathically communicating it's all about how to use it I definitely do wish that 6 and 14 abilities were better instead of a charm it should be dominate for the 6th level it should give you something like a reaction hit where you redirect the momentum towards them or the momentum of their strike being redirected pushes them away five feet or maybe it recharges a spell slot or a invocation use
I actually think create thrall is better than it sounds because it’s one of the few times the affect doesn’t say that they know they have been charmed by you and it doesn’t have a time limit. Having an important npc charmed by you can be super useful for role play advantages. Also if you want to interrogate an enemy after you knock them unconscious it can be useful.
Yeah absolutely it can be really great if the Warlock understands how to really lean into the social aspect of having good charisma rolls. But a lot of how it will go down will depend greatly on DM interpretation and understanding of how a certain NPC might react.
great voice, great animation, and great explination.

Why talking a mile a minute? Can any of you take it in at this speed?
Too fast and slurred speech ruined it.
