Nice kit! I think part of the problem with belt kits though, is that we wear out pants really low on the hips in modern days. It used to be common to wear them around the waist. And if you look at civil war uniforms, the belt actually went on top of your coat at the waist. It's a lot more comfortable to carry weight their, and it's not attached to your pants so it won't be pulling down your pants.
Yes it is. But the web belt is wide enough to distribute the weight so it doesnt hitch your pants down lol
You wear a belt for your pants and the belt for the belt kit just goes around the waist wherever it rides comfortably.

I agree totally about the suspender comment. No sense in going the belt route if your belt is so heavy you have to use suspenders! Really enjoyed this video. This was JUST what I was thinking about doing.

Floridian here as well. My only mini issue with this, and again, different for everyone. I would not be wearing shorts while out in the brush. We have so many creatures, plants, cold blooded man eaters, and fire ants from hell, that I rather wear breathable pants that can convert to shorts versus risking getting something on my legs that could either bite my skin or make life a living hell. I spent three weeks in the hospital due to ivy and never again will I wear shorts. I also bring a small squirt bottle of vinegar to rinse down with after I have been in the bush. (vinegar will remove ivy oils from your gear and skin) Hike safe folks!
That's exactly where I am at right now. The "office" is so buried I can't even turn around. Lyme tick got me this year and with my MS I need to make sure that I can carry what I need to until I'm healed up. And I will not pack junk so it's light enough for a 3 year old to carry because we all know how long that stuff will last; 2 seconds before you need it. Awesome video.

I have that same setup without having seen this until today. I use it as a go belt for ho,e defense by including ar15 mag holders.
The old school ALICE stuff still works great!
OMG!!! I went through this same thing and I ended up with about twenty expensive backpacks, sling packs, and haversacks. I must have every brand of tarp ever made and I do not even want to tell you about stoves and fire gear. Then I would pack and unpack a bunch of gear and I would switch the gear around to different bags until I began to think I had O.C.B. Finally, I figured out the solution to my problem was as simple as packing my gear and choosing the right bag was as simple as packing for what I was going to do, where I was going, how long I was going to be out, weather forecast, above or below the tree-ling, availability of water, the season, etc., etc.

Yea I have had the same experience. I carry one bag, my emergency travel kit (usually just worn for the day, for hiking/hunting), which is a rather small back pack, and one huge back pack, which is intended for long stays , and actual camping.

Looks good. I got about the same. You could vacuum seal your e sleeping kit. Maybe include a fold out mag dump pouch for foraging in summer, fold out saw, hand held radio, head lamp and mini water filter, probably for leavel 2 or 3.

This is exactly what I was thinking, I just started getting into the idea of taking of into the wild for a day and started consulting experts....like you. Every channel seemed to have methods that became a three to four tier system of items and you obviously realized this too. Thanks this actually clears up a few troubles I've been having. Next check I am just going for an ALICE having purchased a bag I've realized is the "let's get out of town w/smile" bag I need a 'get the heck out of dodge' or stuck in hecksville bag and ALICE seems the most affordable.

Great idea about breaking them down. I have a butt pack that is just sitting in the closet I'll be breaking it out to make a level 1. Thanks for the video.
I have not done the level 3 kit yet, I moved and most of my stuff is in storage...
I like using the harness instead of a backpack for two reasons. Firstly, the harness leaves most of your back uncovered and the sweat has somewhere to go. Secondly, I use a padded belt which makes life more comfortable. Small day packs have poor waist belts.
I carry a butt pack and two canteens one with cup and stove. Few places I walk have creeks/lakes to refill. (It is Australia afterall). Plus, if I get caught out I have enough for a night.
No knife or gun - again it is Australia.
I also carry a PLB and phone. Roller bandages for snake bite.
I have a torch on my key ring and a small windup torch in the pack.
I can add another ammo pouch with wet weather gear if it looks like rain or I'm in the mountains.
Other than that much the same minus the grits.
I use the harness with this rig quite a bit, depends on where I am going...
No knife? Surely you’re allowed to carry a knife into the wilderness in Oz?
A modular setup like that is easy, comfortable and functional.
Especially if you don’t like having things weighing your pockets down.
I add, subtract and substitute gear and pouches as needed and can be ready to go for whatever in a minute or two.
I use a wider, thicker leather belt (doubles as a strop to touch up a knife) and buckle it around a tree when I’m relaxing in camp and can grab in just a second if I need to leave camp knowing I have at least the basics on me.
Works great in conjunction with a haversack too.
I am a big fan of the ALICE stuff and still use this hiking belt regularly

Oh this has always been my biggest dilemma. How many pairs of socks. A pocket knife, but which one, oh I’ll take three, and which binos. And do I take a water purifier or just a canteen. Oh the list goes on. 😊. Thanks great ideas.

I like the suspenders because I have a bad back but I refuse to stop walking in the woods
I also like them, makes it much easier to carry any weight you may have on the belt

2 kits
Number 1 - Truck camping anything I want
Number 2 - kuiu Backpack 35lbs with out food and water.
Toss pack in truck in case I forget something because the pack has it all LOL

I was stationed in Florida, but now live in the mountains of Virginia. I run a pocket knife and sometimes a Mora or other neck knife. I carry concealed. Like you my level one is a belt rig but I alsoI carry a simple hammock for rest stops or relaxation while my coffee brews or to read a good book. I also carry a sawyer filter system except for the syringe. As to comfort I run a nylon Condor more gun belt. Suspenders are not needed for a load less than 9 lbs. From 10 to but not more than 12 lbs add the suspenders. Heavier than 12 lbs I go to a pack. I bought a tan Condor gun belt and spray painted my ALICE and MOLLE pouches and suspenders with tan, dark and medium brown. Which subdues some of military look and makes it more like a hunters rig. Carrying concealed just makes me an old fart out enjoying the woods.
I usually just open carry, noone has ever given me a glance..
As a scout leader your level one kit is perfect for Boy Scouts to carry minus the firearm as I’m in australia and you can’t go hiking with a gun even if you have a gun license you take a gun in the btrunk of your car to the gun club you’d shoot at or onto the private property you have permission to hunt or cull kangaroos on
Thanks! The good part about this kit is that it can be added/subtracted to to fit your needs without it becoming too heavy or cumbersome. I understand what you mean about firearms, and I can easily replace the holster with another ALICE pouch if needed.
Learning about other countries is interesting. Can you hunt on public property? The main reason I got my hunting license in the US was so I could bring guns with me.
@@thebrizzy Yes. I was out on a public hunting area when I did this video. There is also a great creek to fish in and I show that in some prior videos...
In Canada we'd substitute that handgun with a bear spray canister!! It's pretty much mandatory where I am, on the western side of the Rockies. Except for the bear on my lawn, Fluffy.

Here in California if your smart and leaving the house going to visit people or to the mountains or where eve.r We have to be ready for the earth to start shacking and breaking up freeways and so on we have to have at least 5 days we just don't know it could get really torn up so were ready . There in Florida you get storm warning here we just get banged when it hit's it could be days before we could get home if we were in the mountains but at 75 I have learned my lesson .
You definitely have a LOT of different things to consider than we have! About the worst things we have to deal with here are bad thunderstorms in the summer, along with the occasional hurricane. However, there is usually enough warning with thunderstorms and DAYS of warnings with a hurricane....

•Pouch with snacks, drink mix, water filter, and compass.
•Sleeping Bag Liner
Relying on a space blanket for shelter almost guarantees an uncomfortable night. I would trade that for a silk sleeping bag liner. They’re lightweight and will fit in that same pouch.
Why does it have to be “uncomfortable” if you have to stay out overnight? Looks like you’ve got it all covered for an excellent evening out….
A few comforts like coffee, beef jerky, maybe a soup mix don’t make that much difference in weight, but can make a big difference in comfort.

Thanks. Yes, I vary the components of this kit regularly and you have given me some good ideas.
Also any extra stuff left that's not in a kit can be stored in vehicles for emergency and convenience use.

Great idea! Love your level 1. The only thing is that I wouldn’t keep anything directly in the lower back spine area . They say that you have a main nerve back there and if you fall onto that area with something back there, it could paralyze you if you sever that nerve or something like that. Just an average guy here . Dont really know much about it .

I like the suspenders even with a lighter belt, it helps with my lower back, but I understand why some people don't like the suspenders.
I like the suspenders too and have a couple of sets of them. I use a set with this belt also. I was trying to be as light as possible in this instance though, if the belt was any heavier I would have used them.
FloridaBoy Survival During the Vietnam war, officers would wear the suspenders with only a pistol and a compass on belt. With suspenders you don't have to have belt too tight. Without suspenders, if you have your belt too snug, you might add a combat belt pad.
with a good suspension system or a molle vest that can attach pouches to chest and back like the flc and distribute the weight, it almost makes no sense to go below a level 2 kit. a good waist or buttpack and carry a lightweight bivvy and ground sheet. the poncho and sleeping kit can be sinched to tied to the waistpack
Good point. However to each his own and I still like to go light when I am just day hiking...
That level 1 setup would be much more comfortable if you walking any distance with a Y harness. Especially with that pistol on there and water in that canteen.
It would, which is why I have a Y harness for it...
I like the belt ideas you've got there. I don't have a belt kit personally, but if I did, it would look a lot like the one you showed except I'd ditch the food in the food pouch and replace it with a good poncho, altoids tin style fishing kit, a small flash light, batteries, and a phone charger. I'd also dump the emergency space blanket and maybe call that a snack pouch (if you must) or better yet, a place for a compass.
I don't carry a kit that small though. Like you, I started building my kit and swapped gear out every month until now I have 2 complete kits. I consider my Level 1 kit a 3 days or less kit. My level 1 kit is about 20 lbs and is far more gear than I would need on a 2 - 4 hour hike. But I carry that one during little hikes like that for the fitness advantage. I carry it everywhere I go. It's my "Get home bag".
My level 2 kit is for adventures greater than 3 days. It has many of the same types of items as my Level 1 but with more tools. Things like sharpening stones, tool kits, shelter building tools, maps, first aid, trapping items and other such things are in that kit. That kit typically hovers around 35 lbs.

Simple, I like it, but I still like using suspenders. Too me, suspenders help carry the load on my hips.
I have a couple of suspender rigs and they are great. Down here it is just too hot sometimes even for suspenders, but if you pack it right and adjust it right all of the weight is on your hips and just a belt can be very comfortable....

i have a similar setup with the two main differences being I carry a ruger bearcat(.22lr) and a poncho instead of a tarp.

You are right that youtube, all the so called survival gurus, and everyone else jumping on the tacticool lets make a buck on gear band wagon, have turned us into gear junkies.
Questions... How is the comfort level of your belt rig after a number of hours in the woods? What is its weight?

I agree, the "gear junkies" seldom go out into the woods either...I do. This rig is very comfortable, I have worn it for hours and almost never know it is on. I think the weight is around 5 lbs loaded up...
I'm having a packing dilemma. Because I'm also trying to pack a bug out bag. So in my opinion building bu levels is a great idea. Because carrying a bug out bag is crazy heavy ridiculous if you live in a cold blizzard place. So my backpack is only going to fit shelter items like sleeping bag tarp and warm socks etc. I don't have room for the rest of anything else if I'm actually going to pull that off. Its truly overwhelming but I do believe in being prepared, but also to be able to have everything on your person being able to actually carry it. In a bug out situation I believe you should be able to walk out with everything you need attached to yourself Because in my area it could be snowing and with the emp scare vehicles might not be running. So that's how I'm gonna do it. Somehow. Overwhelming. So in my case I would need a belt, chest system and backpack. Cheers! Great video

Like you I have a lot of crap, and yes its hard to decide what to do with it all. I like your concept and have decided to create my own version. I think I may end up with 4 kits. Levels 1,2,and 3 and a hunting kit. I checked your page and didn't see the videos for the level 2 and 3 kits. I would love to see what you have done. I like the set up you have. I would suggest some way to purify water in case you did have to stay out all night. Our Florida heat will sweat it out of you brother.

In the next video I am doing a loadout on this kit and in the canteen cover where I say that I have more matches I also have 2 chlorine dioxide water purification tablets so between that and boiling water in my canteen cup I am covered. And you are right about the Florida heat...lol
Nice kit, but for my personal use for a day hike, all of my gear fits easily in a plastic ziplock sandwich bag, not including my knife, Surefire Sidekick pocketlight, tissues, phone, and wallet. About a pound for everything. 16 ounces of water goes in my back pocket. That little set-up covers Shelter, Water, Fire and Food. Many thanks.

Your not packing enough H20. I would have a minimum of 2 QT"S on the belt. The two lg pouches need to go and replace with a single ALICE type butt pack to free up room for WA WA. To hard to get canteen in and out when it's in the middle of your back anyway, flap's are always trying to go in first. Ex Army Infantry experience!
Down here you can always find more water to process and drink. Good thing about ALICE is that you can easily move pouches. I have logged a lot of miles with this belt with no issues...
First I would add H- style suspender harness to it, a belt pad for comfort, a butt pack instead of the 2 pouch's , pistol mounted on the belt instead of a drop leg, an a quality holster at that, nalgene canteen, no gi plastic, unless you add KOOL aid to your water, poncho, compass, etc, etc. This is how I rock my setup for slipping thru the woods, butt pack is more versatile an allows more or less space depending on the season in Fla. I try an keep it lite as I'm hunting with it an like to boot scoot thru the woods an cover some miles, all an all, your on the right track, time will refine the set up.
My setup is refined to how I want it, this one is specifically designed to be a belt kit with no suspenders. I also have a couple of suspender rigs that I use for different things. The great thing about ALICE stuff is that you can have yours the way that you want and I can arrange mine for my specific needs.....

If you are in Florida you're gonna get arrested for carrying in that method. Florida does not allow open carry only if you are fishing or "backpacking" or carry to and from a temporary residence or campsite.

Just take your full kit even on 1 day or 2 day outings. The extra weight is training and conditioning. In a real survival scenario not only will 1 day or 2 day kits be non optimal, but if you're not fit enough to carry a full kit then you're not likely to survive anyway. I always take my full kit.
Taking a full kit and having to unpack, use items and repack it all again even on just an evening outing really helps you to streamline your kit into what works and what doesn't, and keeps it down to the essentials and over time you get used to your full kit like it is the back of your hand.
Even in summer, I carry with me a heavy wool overcoat and 4 season sleeping bag and four seasons of layering, spring traps, fishing kit and even things I never use like maintenance kit for sewing etc. For me, a 3 day 'bug out bag' is useless, if it's not all season self reliance to survive independently and indefinitely then it's not worth carrying. Sure, it's a heavy kit, but with a comfortable set up your body strengthens and gets used to it. If I can hike 20 miles a day with a full kit with Ankylosing spondilytis, then anyone can do it.
To each his own. It is too hot down here to bring a full kit in the summer and I have enough stuff to fill several kits so I decided to make 3 different ones...

I'd be curious to see how you keep your Buck 119 sharp. I have a real problem sharpening their 420HC.
The Bucks are notoriously hard to sharpen and this one is no different. I use a diamond sharpener on it that works pretty well
I have several different black handle Buck knives . If you don't mind changing the factory grind ( collector value) then I have been using the chefs choice 2 stage electric sharpener . It has a rubber strop wheel that does a good job considering the small amount of effort / time .

I am happy that you are in Florida. While I do not have a video of me using this specific kit, it has gone out with me many, many times and is still in this configuration today and performs flawlessly. I am sure your videos show you using your kits.....wait, you have no videos lol

I disagree. My edc(level 1 as you call it), is a pistol belt, lc 1 h harness, 1 ammo pouch, 1 compass pouch, 2 saw pouches, a 10" kukri, and a space for my Henry 45 lc mares leg(not normally carried in town). You may note I'm missing a canteen as in town I'll buy drinks around town and use a water bottle pouch out of town.
The pouches contain 1 tact 2.0 bivvy, water filter kit, cordage(#36 bankline), Leatherman, 2 person hammock, 7 mil plastic dropsheet tarp, fire kit, lighter, mini flashlight, suunto compass, 2 bandanna, pair lightweight hunting gloves.
To be honest the lc1 is more a posture aid than anything else. And while the rest is emergency survival, in town it's more of extra exercise weight than anything.
My equipment doesn't look stylish but is tested to keep me dry and warm 3 season. It weighs about 3.5 lbs.
You will also note the lack of food as I don't feel it's required in my edc, that's in my hiking (level 2 kit).
Yours is a great option for where you live. That is the great thing about ALICE stuff, you can change it in seconds to match your needs.
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival lol all too true, no 1 kit can do it all. In my life I've lived in the California and Texas deserts, Mississippi and North Carolina wet lands, Colorado and Germany mountains.
And save for the harness system and equipment categories remaining the same, the items themselves have changed. But I suppose due to military training I do tend to gravitate toward more heavier durable (lol and cheap) equipment over the lightweight and flimsy things.
But I do have to wonder if a person is so greatly concerned about sheading pounds off their pack to finish a hike. Maybe they might want to evaluate their current health state and if what they are planning to do is completely wise.
